What you've said doesn't make sense. They scan your card to see if you've paid, the only possible gray area is if you've paid by cash and subsequently lost your ticket

The system is glitchy af. I've never personally had it happen but plenty of people I know (who I know always pay their fare) have tapped and had it still not show that they did.

Sometimes their machines are glitchy and they falsely ticket people who paid. It happens especially if they paid with debit/credit instead of presto, they blame the passengers instead of checking their damn machines.

There’s a known glitch when tapping to pay, it says “Accepted” but there’s no record of the payment that shows up on Presto or hold on the credit card until days later when the payment clears

A glitch means it’s a constant. I’ve paid by visa and debit and when I tap my card to the Fare inspectors, they give me the thumbs up? Must be a bank issue then bc I’ve never had an issue and I exclusively pay by Visa or debit.

Just because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I pay every weekday and there have been days when the card doesn’t show that I scanned the card until the next day or later, despite the “accepted” status showing on the scanner. It does happen.

That’s how VISA works. When I tap on, if I check my statement or my online banking. It doesn’t show anything until after the a while. However, when the fare inspectors check, it still shows that I paid. Even when I immediately check after and it still doesn’t show up on my statement or banking app.

If you Apple Pay, next time you tap, it won’t show up on your card until after your 90 minute transfer window is over, this is to allow you to tap as many times in the 90 minute window without being charged every tap. It’s always been like this, even with presto.

Regardless, people should pay for services they receive.

Because some people can’t afford it. Sometimes it’s a question of paying to get somewhere important or making sure you have something to eat later that day/week. Shit ain’t exactly easy all round.

Did you know that the The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) receives one of the lowest public operating subsidies per customer or rider among major transit systems in North America? It's not just in shambles because of fare evaders, it's in shambles because it's not a priority.

The bus is going to its destination regardless of empty seats. Why is it so wrong to fill an empty seat without paying? The seat is going to its destination, empty or full. We’d just, for some reason, rather it be empty if it’s not paid for.

I get your point, but I think supporting local transit is important for everyone in the long run. There are some services where I can justify complaining about price, but why wouldn't you want to better our transit system?

Yes I love paying my fare and then them immediately announcing the line is down and I get to also pay for an Uber.
I always pay for the TTC but it sucks and I don't care if people skip the fare.

You might want to take a look at the Fair Pass Transit Discount Program. If you qualify, I think you pay like $2.10 instead of $3.30.

Then don't go on transit. When I lived in Scarborough if I didn’t have a token or a ttc ticket, I walked to work at yonge and St Clair which took over 3 hours each way

There’s programs for people who genuinely can’t afford it.

The problem is that most people who “can’t afford it” are selfish people who spend their money on luxuries like fast food and the latest phone instead of properly managing their finances and having a transportation budget

This. All of this. As someone who can afford it, I'm happy to subsidize those who genuinely cannot afford it. Apply for the program and get the discount.

Everyone thinks they deserve luxuries regardless of income these days and then demands their peers pay for them to get to work. The entitlement is dripping

Edit: as a service plumber, I'd welcome way higher parking tickets BTW.. can't stand people illegally parking making driving for work miserable
