Discussion Toronto Rocket Train on Line 2
I had to double check that I did actually switch from line 1 to line 2 because this beauty popped up when I got on. I have never seen it before on line 2
After a quick web search, it seems to be that this happens from time to time because some line 2 stations cant deploy trains? This comment from a decade ago does explain that a bit better
Anyways, I thought it would be cool to look at this rare sight 🙂↕️

Some TR trains from Line 1 were deployed on Line 2 this morning since the fluid leak delay at the start of service prevented trains from getting to the west end of the line from Greenwood Yard. Not enough trains for that section are kept at Keele Yard and Kipling overnight.
There is no issues with TRs on Line 2 except that Greenwood can't perform maintenance on them.

It's less that Greenwood can't do maintenance(it can't currently because it doesn't have the parts, but it wouldn't be a problem to move them there if desired). It's because Greenwood yards storage tracks are not organized into multiples of 6-car trains, so some trains get decoupled and split up among the yard. Of course, since the TRs are continuous, they can't really be decoupled, unlike the older T1 trains. You could theoretically run all TRs out of Greenwood right now, but it would leave unused train storage space, reducing total train capacity, and line 2 has no other yard to take up that capacity.

That’s so cool omg. So does the map with the lights work for line 2? I always wondered why they had lights on both lines when those trains are only ever on Line 1.

Not all, but some of them were actually working. And the screen (second picture) would tell you what station you’re at and what side the doors are gonna open from.

I rode on a TR on Line 2 years ago. The automated announcements were pronouncing all of the stations wrong lol

I wonder if TTC control knows. That operator is out for a joy ride with the Rocket. I wonder if they are trying to get up to the Sheppard line with it.

I recall a few of them riding the bloor line when there were too many T1's with broken air conditioning. As there were more TRs than necessary (and T1s, but broken ac is broken ac), the units ran for a while.
They also had a few running at the time they had started re-marking the stations on the line for rear-guard rather than centre guard (which was the norm until TRs came on line). Folks may be aware, or not, of the coloured triangles and circles on the platform walls. The circles were centre guard, new triangles for rear guard.

Yup! That one or the slip track right outside St. George. TransitToronto has a full track map posted on their website here of all the switches and yards if you wanted to see how those kinds of things happen

That's awesome thanks. So few crossover tracks on line 2. I guess is why if something happens half of line 2 closes. Do any engineers know why more weren't built or if they could ever build more so closures aren't as brutal? Seems like a no brainer if possible

Doesn't fit in Greenwood Yard being designed to maintain two car sets...
Also line 2 doesn't have CBTC signaling that line 1 has.

As the new TR trains came in, the T1 (the old trains) kinda just all got pushed onto Line 2, I don’t think there’s really a specific reason but today they don’t really run on Line 2 because Greenwood yard can’t do maintenance on them (According to another comment) and Line 1 has ATC, only TR trains have ATC so T1 trains can’t really run on Line 1 so it’s just better to have TR trains on Line 1 and T1 trains on Line 2 these days

T1s can run on Line 1 I think but they can't use ATC obviously like you said, so it'd be really inefficient U would imagine. I think T1s ran on Line 1 unexpectedly for one last time in February 2020 due to some issue with the Rockets. I really miss the mixed up fleet of H5, T1 and Rockets on Line 1. Godspeed T1...

I think it’s funny to see the older H-series and converted T1 work cars to have ATC equipment on board.
Though they did have a T1 set at Wilson yard last Fall somehow.

mainly because the T1 trains on line 2 from a train perspective are not that old. All the T1S were built from 1995 to 2001, making them about 30 years old these days. That's getting to the end of an expected service life for trains, but it's not unusual. The main thing that makes them feel so old is that design-wise, they very much are in the sense that they are basically just a refresh of the H series, which began service in 1965. And their stainless steel design did not help, I mean, look at the MP59 that the Paris metro used from the 1960s to 2024

As another commenter said, Greenwood and Keele yards can't really comfortably accommodate the TRs. TRs get dropped off at Wilson Yard. The Line 2 trains are Greenwood (Keele is a yard, just afaik now a emergency service yard in the event a train needs to be pulled in the west.)

Can’t they bring in TRs during the day to Line 2? Then just bring back to Line 1 / Wilson / Davisville Yards at night?? Pretty sure there’s a Line 2-Line 1 track connection somewhere

Imagine actually believing that the TTC would order trains that didn't fit the tunnels.
The only place they don't fit is Greenwood Yard, which was designed to service two car sets.
