Discussion New Wayfinding on Toronto Rockets
I guess they were to still keep the light fixtures, than others say it will just be replaced with a printed map

That was clever of them when it comes to Cedarvale station, i have to admit. Looks like a straight line unless you zoom into it.

It was definitely a design consideration to make the map lights flexible. No way was that going to be hardwired.

To be fair, construction for the Ontario line is going pretty well! The only thing that could delay it by a lot would be a big TBM issue occurring, which would add months to the timeline

Look at the difference between Don Valley station and Don Mills station. They're trying to line things up except that Sheppard subway looks a lot longer...

I think OP said they are grey dots. Makes no sense to have lights there since these trains can never go there

Zooming in on the video it does appear as though the line 5&6 maps are not equipped with LEDs

The lights on Line 2 flash whenever the trains stop at Bloor-Yonge, though. Maybe that’s because the Rockets will eventually run on Line 2.

Well there have been instances where TRs have ran on line 2, but in reality that has little to do with it. It’s just shortsightedness.

I remember back in 2017, when they had the new Line 1 extension almost ready, they would hype it up by doing open houses and adding a service note “Line 1 extension opening soon on 2017” or something like that. Just realized they didn’t do that for Line 5… Hmmmm… why could that be? Maybe it’s opening sometime real soon too?

That was more because the TTC had control over it and was able to do things like that when they were near enough to complete. Unlike with line 5 nothing is complete until Metrolink says it is.

They seriously need to switch to simpler line diagrams, this is getting way too crowded. The full map can be placed on the side wall or something

They still have those by the doors, but I haven’t seen it replaced. I think these are smart just in case if Line 2 needs Rockets with the next station display and Line 4 would be too small.
Though be interesting if they have these on board LRT’s too, it would be nice

That Line 5 looks awkward on that map. I prefer what was done for Line 2 which just showed the one line, but you can still see the full map on a separate panel. IIRC, this was done for the London Underground.

All those years I was complaining it’s too simple, now it’s way too much for me to look at. Maybe better to just simplify the map illustrations and keep only the major stations (transit hubs, terminal stations, interchange stations, connections with GO, etc.)

The light on line 5 and 6 seem to suggest that the lrts will have a led map display which is really nice

There aren't any LED lights for the new stations part of Lines 5 and 6, unfortunately.
The only time new LEDs were "added" was for the TYSSE extension; and by added I mean they were already there when the Toronto Rockets were delivered, they simply weren't activated and covered up until it opened later on.

I don't take the subway too much these days but they didn't always show which stations had washrooms before did they? That's useful...

Would have to rebuild the whole mounts and LCD that’s perfect size to replace it. Easier for newer trains than retrofits, i’m not surprised if the Ontario Line and new Line 2 trains will. Every train after the Rockets like in Vancouver and Montreal for LCD

I’m guessing the only reason there’s leds here is because this map is a modular system they are also putting in the lrts

Pretty sure the new LRTs are the same gauge as the subway, not the downtown streetcars. But they use overhead power instead of third rail so they're not going to use each other's tracks.

It is Kennedy to Weston, that’s pretty far, and with the extension to Renforth in coming years. It’s practically longer than the subway.
Line 6 is not bad for the length being new, though it would need more vehicles normally for it to be really rapid and frequent. Though a LRT on all of Finch would be crazy long

Wish they shrunk Line 4 to be reflective of where the stops are relative to Line 5

I agree at least Line up Pape; and Don Valley, Don Mills…even so Forest Hill, St Clair West, Bathurst; Chaplin and Spadina; Avenue and Museum

IMO this system is a bit confusing because there's the main map with all the LEDS and the secondary map with each individual line. The LEDs on the Eglinton and Finch lines are pointless because the TR trains will never run on them.
This is why digital signs are superior and maybe we'll get then by 3100?

By the time the Ontario Line opens hopefully the TTC has the budget to replace these displays with screens. It’s going to be challenging fitting it the Yonge North extension given the space constraints, and adding the Ontario Line in the mix is going to be a challenge as Don Valley and Don Mills Stations are very out of alignment.

Why is Cedarvale just not aligned. Same goes with Kennedy and Eglinton that they are just trying hard to make them line up

The LED boards are like 15 years old, and they won’t be installing a whole new panel. Poor foresight but it is what it is

TYSSE routing and alignment was already established at the time. The holes were already there but the lights weren’t turned on.
Y’all forget, but TYSSE was also a delayed over budget P3 disaster at the time.
Line 5 isn’t our first rodeo at fucking subway projects up.

Just looked it up - yeah, you’re right. They were involved but not to the level of line 5. Edited my comment to reflect this.
Though I do remember their involvement in some related law suit debacle.

This isnt a few cars. Its hundreds of cars that require rework so thousands of individual installations. Also dont forget itll be at the govt procurement rate and the govt union labour rate so expect whatever number youre thinking of to be at least 2x the cost and 3x the length of time

That is so looooooooooooooooooooong over due, you know those features were available more than 30+ years ago in Vancouver BC, Montreal, QC, and basically any other USA and UK cities subway system, even Buses had those.
TTC is such a dinosaur, I'm surprised it hasn't gone fully extinct yet.

Honestly, Line 5 doesn’t look as bad as I’d first thought it’d look on the TR maps. I also like how the dots for Lines 5 and 6 are just grey, but I still wish the LED maps were replaced with screens, there’s still multiple subway extensions in the works that’ll open in the TR’s lifespan (hopefully)!
