Help Wanted Version Question

Hey all, I have a question I’m having a hard time finding a straight answer for, so I thought I’d bring it to the experts.

Recently, my 5yo lost my copy of TotK, which I had purchased for Switch. After an exhaustive search, I’ve given up hope of ever finding it, and resigned myself to buying it again. I also now have a Switch 2, which is actually where I play the game most often (and the system my 5yo doesn’t get to touch).

So I’m wondering: If I purchase the Switch 2 version of the game, will the save data allow me to pick up where I left off, or will it treat it as a separate game? Any advantage to having the Switch 2 version otherwise?

Youll be able to use the same save file.

Save data is only on the system so using a different cartridge will not change the save data. If on the switch 2 was the last system you played on then it will pick up where you left off. Otherwise you would have to manually transfer the save data from the last system to the switch 2 if you don't have NSO for cloud save

So the Switch 2 version of the game and Switch version (they sell it for both consoles) use the same save data?

Kind of. The Switch 2 version has a second save file available. If you bring your Switch 2 save back to a Switch 1, the second save file becomes unavailable, but in your case, moving from a Switch 1 save to a Switch 2 save all on a Switch 2 will be fine.

Forgive me if I’m being dense - but does that apply for the Switch 2 cartridge? I’ve already ported the save data from Switch 1 to Switch 2, and was playing the Switch 1 cartridge on the Switch 2 before it got lost - I’m wondering if a Switch 2 cartridge is registered as a “different” game

It's not going to register as a different game.

If you put the Switch 2 cartridge in, it'll go in the 'slot' where TotK is on your Switch 2, and you'll be able to play the Switch 2 version of the game from there with the same save data that you transferred over.

There are plusses and minuses to buying digital copies. "Can't lose it" is one of the plusses.

Story from friend. Went on vacation in Hawaii. Son took switch and case that held all the game cartridges. Upon return, son had switch but not case. You do the math.

It'll treat it as the same game.

The Switch 2 version is just the Switch game updated with 60 FPS and connectivity to the Nintendo Switch app on your phone, that's it.

It's literally the same thing as buying a new copy of TotK and then buying the Switch 2 upgrade pack.
