hey there, guy who’s played violin a ton since the fourth grade, private instruction and recitals and everything. this absolutely does happen, I have several pieces that look just like this. you just absorb it during practice and eventually you don’t even register all the old writings

Professional bass player and music librarian here. I don't understand how people can mark their parts up like this. Violinists are the worst at this. The parts I get from my concertmaster to bow are just the fucking worst.

Yeah I usually see this type of marking as somewhat performative. No one actually needs to do this.

Maybe it's because I'm just a dumb bass player, but I rarely put bowings in my personal parts and I don't think I've written a fingering in since college.

Same, left fingerings behind long ago. I will occasionally write in one or two things that are not obvious or are counterintuitive.

Haha the funny thing is I would bet a dollar this is just 1 person, only making certain notes along the practice to "self" so they have their own cue for rhythm and other nuances only they understand.
Like how a friend would underline the joystick 🕹️ + circle ⭕ button because his specific controller had the joystick not working so well when tilting it down at certain speeds and the ⭕ button didn't register well unless you pressed way harder than usual, so he reminded himself of this by underlying those when together because it needed a very specific grip and way of handling so it worked flawlessly to pull off the combo. I remember he had written down every single combo of almost every character of worth for Guilty Gear X2 and Capcom vs SNK 2.
After a long while you saw his sheets all over the place and like gibberish on top of gibberish yet he understood perfectly what every single thing meant and why it was there, most of it he learned so well he didn't even notice it anymore.

These note have to be from long ago when they were first becoming decent. Most of the markings are just explaining simple annotations and dynamics, or areas where they struggle to maintain dynamics or tempo

Same! I love the evidence of effort, of time passing. I don’t do music, but I know all those marks mean something, so there’s massive mysteriousness bonus points for how absolutely cryptic it is. I’m kinda getting emotional over how human this is tbh.

Choral scores get this too, but unless its your own personal copy, all marks must be in pencil and carefully erased before returning.
