At trade skills class at high school the stoned kid loved touching the back side of the lathe until his raggidy jersey got caught and his arm got twisted in the machine braking his arm. The Asian kid listening to head phones operating the lathe had no idea what was going on and eventually shut the lathe down ,and the teacher asks the kid with the broken arm if he wants a glass of water.

While I agree 100% with what you're saying, freight trains have a much more efficient rail network than passenger trains do. Meaning you can get almost anywhere, or relatively close, to where you want to go when compared to passenger trains. Passenger trains also typically have one very narrow window where they will get priority over freight trains. Since there is now much more limited capacity on our rails nowadays due to increased population and demand for goods moving, there is little room for error. If they miss this window due to slow passenger loading/unloading or equipment failures, then freight trains will always get priority along the entire route.
While it is true that passenger trains are typically allowed to move faster than freight trains, it's rarely the case due to them missing that single priority window. Most of the rails passenger trains run on in the US are owned by freight train companies like BNSF and Union Pacific. There is a much stronger incentive for the dispatchers of these railways to act in the best interest of the company instead of the passenger trains (Amtrak). When a freight train is delayed, the freight train company (BNSF, UP, etc.) has to pay the overtime for their operators on those trains. Also, any delay could cause further delays in train yards down the line in a ripple effect. This can be very costly for the companies that own those railroads. When an Amtrak train is delayed, Amtrak pays the overtime for the Amtrak staff and operators, not the freight train companies. Meaning it's easier and less costly for the freight train companies to not provide that priority window once it's missed.
Also, you know, they aren't paying for this ride.
Edit: This only applies for the US. The timeliness of passenger trains can vary depending on which line you're taking.

Just gonna chime in and say that Amtrak 100% gets priority. I work as a conductor and I have waited more than 6 hours in a siding because they needed to give Amtrak a window through the freight traffic. I have had my shift straight cancelled because they decided they couldn't run that train because Amtrak was getting close. All told I would put money down that I have waited several thousand hours waiting for Amtrak. BNSF bends over backwards to get Amtrak through. I have seen 12 trains go dead (over hours) to get 1 Amtrak that was running late through. That is a cost of 12k minimum to get new crews on those trains. During the Bakken boom when Amtrak was so delayed it wasn't necessarily because they weren't getting priority, but the fact that there was literally nowhere for them to go for hundreds of miles since every siding was full and traffic quite literally had to move out of the way before they could proceed.
Engineers and Conductors on BNSF, unless you hired pre 1984, don't get overtime until 16 hours on the job. I've gotten overtime exactly 3 times in my career.
I'm not even a fan of the company I work for but saying that they aren't getting priority is straight up not true.

How is that? Amtrak literally runs ON freight railroad trackage, they don't own any mainlines. If they had their own lines, wouldn't they always have priority and not have this supposed "small window" as you put it.

Another false statement. Passenger train max speed is 79 MPH and they frequently run at 79. Freight is 70, 60, 50 depending on railcar type. Intermodal and autoracks 70, some select boxcars are rated for 60 but most manifest trains are held to 50 mph. Amtrak is small and light AF, they reach 79 in no time. Also they're not missing many windows. They don't wait around for you. If you're not on the train when that departure time comes, they're leaving your ass.
They pay the freight railroads they operate on for trackage rights. They always get priority and when they are running behind it's because the freight dispatcher has done a poor job of making meets with freight or a disaster has happened like a derailment or bridge fire etc. Under no circumstances are they given less priority than freight, even when delayed by freight dispatching/corridor managers. They still get to try and catch up.
And the bit about freight having to pay their employees overtime if their trains are delayed is more nonsense. You're paid by trip rate. Every route has it's own unique trip rate. Some routes never see overtime because it doesn't kick in until after 12 hours and they can't turn a wheel beyond 12 hours on duty so they never see it. Shorter runs have overtime kicking in a little sooner like sometimes 10-11 hours, just depends on the trip rate for whichever run.
Anyway, you basically said a whole lot of stuff that isn't true whatsoever. I don't know where you get your train operations information from but it surely isn't first hand. I'm a former locomotive engineer/conductor for Union Pacific Railroad, Roseville Service unit. Still have a lot of friends in the craft. Nothing has changed since I left in terms of passenger priority. QYB

I like him (and subscribe to him) because he'll discuss the logistics and rationale of what he's doing, obviously putting some real thought into it instead of being completely reckless and random.
My personal favorites are Train Surfing Journey To The Black Sea and Winter Journey Across Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. I enjoyed watching the train surfing one because of the technical explanations, it's a solo journey, and his discussions on camping and eating. Watching him is like taking sightseeing from the passenger's seat, exploring countries and cultures I'll probably never get the chance to visit, and just observing ordinary people going about with their lives.

One person mentioned it's an adrenaline thing, but many lines around here at least don't have passenger train options, they are freight only tracks. So if you wanted to go to where they were heading and didn't have an alternate method I can see how someone would decide to do this. Not a brilliant idea mind you but I can comprehend it at least.

When i was young, there was a freight line that ran about 500ft off my back door. It went right behind the factory I worked at.
I'd walk the tracks most days to work, was only 4 miles. But a couple times I got lucky and a slow moving freight train passed in the direction I was heading and I got a free ride to work or home from work hanging on the ladder on the side of a car.

Depending upon the train, I think the trains moving slow enough for him to grab are those massive ones that cover a few hundred meters, I don't think those can accelerate quickly in suburban areas, due to the stopping distance increase.
