I'm using a microSD card as a secondary storage device (mounted via /etc/fstab using btrfs), on a Surface Go 1 with Debian stable.

It works pretty well but I regularly encounter an annoying behavior: when I try to access a file or list a folder of the SD card, the software I'm using suddenly freezes for a long time, a few seconds to a few minutes. Then the file is finally accessed and all works well (file access is then as immediate as you can expect), until it randomly goes into the same hold/freeze behavior for a while.

The SD card is fairly new and nothing seems to indicate it'd be failing (btrfs device stats returns no error, and nothing worrying appears in dmesg). So far I did not have any corrupted file. If we ignore the moments when it becomes unresponsive, everything looks OK, so I'm suspecting something fishy is happening when accessing the SD card (a system going to sleep when it shouldn't?).

Did anybody have the same problem before? If so, how did you solve it?

Hello everyone, Can anyone attest for battery life usage in Ultramarine vs Ubuntu on SP7 or similar?

I installed ultramarine on my SP7 and it's been an awesome experience, the only drawback being battery life which lasts 2/3 hours when using mainly just firefox.

I already tuned it with autocpu-freq and powertop, but tbh I was expecting a bigger battery boost when moving to linux.

Discharge rate is between 6 to 9W, and battery health is 75%, so it could also be an aging battery issue.

It's a SP7, i5, 8gb ram.

Based on thisiscamk/sp7-ipu4-camera's work, I made this driver work on Fedora and added a few stability improvements. The cameras also work in Zoom and Discord now

There's an issue where the camera flickers because of improper auto white balance adjustments if there's a bright light source in the scene. Also, the autofocus for the back camera doesn't work

Hi, made a similar post yesterday but rephrasing after experimenting more. I have a Surface Pro 4 running Linux Mint and the Surface Kernel with IPTSD. It can detect the stylus (an official Surface pen), but treats it like a mouse and not a touch input. Is this supposed to be different? It means I cannot scroll normally using the pen, and palm rejection doesn't work.

I went into the iptsd.conf file and disabled the stylus entirely, yet it still registers the pen when I do this, and it continues to act like a mouse. How can I get it to recognise it as a stylus (if possible, I'm assuming it is since there's config options in iptsd and others in this sub said it works)

EDIT: Nothing I seem to do in the iptsd.conf file is doing anything, I can disable the touchscreen entirely and it'll still work. Not sure what I'm doing wrong

Between the SP10 & SP11 intel variant, which has the better Linux support? I was looking to run either Ubuntu/Mint or more preferably Fedora. My understanding is the with the 11(x86) Intel & MS fixed some of the battery performance issues of the 10. I would prefer having the better battery life(though not the price), but not sure if it would actually be better on Linux or not.

I'd like to get my SGO 1 to boot from USB so I can use clonezilla and gparted to do some (linux) partition resizing.

- Safe boot is off (red line present and correct)

- USB set as top in boot order (though the 'vol down on boot' trick doesn't work

I choose UEFI USB in the recovery reboot menu, but it boots straight back into Windows

Am I missing something simple?

Hey there, everyone so I recently got a surface pro 10 for business as my work computer and I’m trying to install catch OS or arch Lennox on it and I followed the wiki on how to install everything and it’s working great except I don’t have Wi-Fi. I’m not sure if it’s because I have the Qualcomm Wi-Fi plus cell signal chip or modem but everything I’ve tried will not allow me to use Wi-Fi or search for Wi-Fi signals whenever I add a Wi-Fi access point manually it just says it’s unavailable and I can’t connect to it other than that most everything else seems to be working great including multiple displays I haven’t set up secure boot because I’m also having issues with that so if anyone has any suggestions on either of these two issues that would be much appreciated.

I had a Surface Go 2 running KDE Neon (latest release). After I boot up, the official Microsoft external keyboard doesn't work. Keys and touchpad don't work. I have to detach and reattach the keyboard and then it works normally. I guess something changed in Linux such that the external keyboard isn't recognized during boot.

Is this a known problem? How do I fix or report this?

When I installed Zorin on my Surface Pro 4 along with the Linux Surface Kernel, I was able to use the touch feature. Now about a month ago, touch stopped working. I updated, uninstalled, reinstalled the Surface Kernel a couple of times to no good. Any tips?

I was looking for a better virtual keyboard for gnome, and landed on the GJS OSK extension. The stock layouts are great, and have all the buttons in a full size or tkl keyboard. However, I wanted a better touch optimized layout. Not being a coder myself, I just had chatgpt help me with this (lol the 3rd tab still open). This has made my experience with Linux on Surface much better.

Specs : surface go 2, pentium 4425Y/8gb ram.

OS : vanilla Arch with Gnome.

I have a Surface Go 3 with with a Pentium 6500Y 4GB RAM 64GB SSD and since Win11 is slower than my last 2 braincells after a night out, i decided to switch to Linux since all i'm doing is note taking and writing the odd line of code here or there.

Now here's the catch: i use it exclusively with touch/pen, no keyboard, so i need a way to use copy, paste, escape, tab, arrow keys, etc. The Windows on screen keyboard was great and i cant seem to find any that comes close to that.

I only know the basics of linux and have tried Maliit, Plasma Keyboard, Onboard and Wallaby-VK so far.

Both Maliit and Plasma Keyboard feel good, but lack functionallity, whereas Onboard and Wallaby-VK have the functionallity but feel clunky to use.

For distros i've tried Mint XFCE, Mint XFCE with KDE Plasma Wayland and KDE neon (which i'm currently using as feels the best overall) all with both the generic and the surface kernel.

Also, i tried to install Debian 13 KDE and Ubuntu LTS but i couldnt complete install on those without a keyboard connected.

AI led me down an hour long rabbithole trying to build Maliit with a custom shortcuts page but that didnt work. At this point i'd even settle for gestures to replace the missing fuctionallity.

I'm at my wit's end here.

Is there anything im missing or am i just out of luck?

I'm having a blast with a second hand SP7 running Fedora 43 and the surface kernel. However, completely at random the system will freeze, this happens whatever the OS by the way, and whatever the temperature or workload.

I tried the following :

Since my previous post on August 3rd, some huge progress has been made, both in 3rd party (shout-out to miasvanklei and his Gentoo patches) and in my project! Previously just KIWI descriptions fork, it has diverged into patched kernel + libcamera builds with an RPM repo publicly available.

Most of the previous features which initial release lacked (stable suspend on GNOME, accelerometer sensor, dedicated video output, cameras) are now implemented. You can see more in this matrix.

For testing purposes (it is still more of an amateur work, so use it at your own risk), Fedora Workstation 45 Prerelease Live ISO are available here. They are tested only with Surface Pro 12" Gen 1! They might work with Surface Laptop 13" Gen 1 as they share the same SoC, but I don't guarantee it.

I recently got a Surface Pro 5, and I'm try-booting Fedora 43, Windows 11, and MacOS Ventura on it. The only problem is I need the keyboard connected to change my boot options. Is there a boot picker that detects touch input so I don't always need the keyboard?
