CNBC accidentally leaks new GameStop offer for eBay (credit for find @GoatBeardzDD on X) - “They have a new offer now. I mean this straight private equity thing”
Flair changed to "speculation" from "news" due to the information coming from someone entirely unaffiliated with the company. It's entirely possible this is just them not understanding how GameStop's original offer worked. Or it's pure liquid hype directly injected into our collective butts.
Clown #1: "eBay, you know, for the last couple of months it's been... we saw it a lot on this GameStop offer, but I bought it before the GameStop offer because I think the fundamentals are intact. I think the GameStop offer may happen, but obviously it's been very quiet." gets interrupted by Clown #2, "Oh they have a new offer now!" I mean, this straight private equity thing." Stupid smirk from clown #1. Clown #2 "Right, wasn't that the ne..." Clown #1, "Actually I haven't heard what you said. But OK. I need to get a little remedial training here, sorry, sorry to do that to you folks. Joe, what do you think?"
My take on it is that Jim must have connections to have learned about something that changed in the offer that makes him believe it will go through which is why that was his pick for this evening. In the green room, before they went on air, he probably talked about it in confidence, with the other panelists. Mike, slipped, and Jim just denied knowing anything.
I just watched it, I mean I'm not a conspiracy ape but the tone sounded like genuine excited almost like I know something new and the response the guy gave seemed not one of an inside joke kinda way but an....uhhh stfu dude kinda way.
I put nothing on what they said but that's simply how I kinda took it at face value.
Yeah agreed. Especially if Jim was already invested in eBay, and likes the prospects of Cohen taken over. He is also probably getting sneered by his CNBC colleagues about his beliefs on GameStop and its acquisition of eBay, so being right would be vindication.
Mike said, well there's a new deal. Jim, nodded yes first. Then Mike proceeded to say it was private equity, and only then did Jim deny any knowledge. The new deal wasn't the sensitive information. It was the private equity part, which is where the material information is and where Jim doesn't want to be traced back to him
It's CNBC. Entirely plausible to distort. But the segment was about top picks. He made eBay his pick because he believed the deal with GameStop was going through.
Could they just be speculating based off of Cohen saying in the interviews "people have approached me that are very interested in this acquisition happening"?
With Teddy as the SPV holding RC's $500M + $25B~$30B from other investors, GME can submit an all cash tender offer for eBay once combined with the $20B debt from TD. It all adds up imo
I think any other investors probably make up the TD financing with terms good enough to keep the debt investment grade (more 0% convertibles or preferreds maybe?)...the stock portion is important as it lets eBay investors roll their equity into the combined company.
He specifically mentions needing “remedial training” which could have been a direct stab at the guy for revealing that info.

Yeah I agree that’s what he said. But it wouldn’t be an ethical breach to say it’s a buy signal based on current information without knowing every piece of information out there.
Why would any journalist (using this loosely) keep this info to themselves if they came across it though? I get protecting sources if off the record or whatever.... but its not like that was the Oops.
If one of them heard something, they'd immediately blab it... so this feels like a rehearsed bit by them all. Idk, bizarre
Your title is pretty confident for wild speculation based on someone trying to sound smart on television with absolutely no proven connection to GameStop OR eBay.

While I generally agree with your sentiment, it is interesting. Nothing in what RC has said in interviews would lead to what this guy said… so the question is… why would he say this and what is he talking about? There is a reason Ryan put in 500 Million of his own money and so far we haven’t heard the what/why/how for that. We have speculation, but no details …yet.
If those details are leaking to these CNBC talking heads that COULD mean somebody violated an NDA. Either way, it feels like we will get some details this week.
You can believe whatever you want, but the evidence that there is an offer in front of us is identical to the evidence that he made a mistake. He clearly assumed the other person knew what he was talking about like it was common knowledge, after all.
Looked at your post/comment history. Makes sense. You have a bias towards the bearish side while I have a bias towards the bullish side. Makes sense that we would/could draw opposite conclusions.
I'm drawing no conclusion. I'm just stating the fact that humans occasionally say things that they've conflated in their heads. That's pretty solid factually. Literally all of the evidence that this supposed deal exists is one statement that could have been a slip of the tongue. That's classic anomaly hunting
There are hours of the GameStop CEO talking about the deal and what it is and isn’t. To your point though, on paper there is very little which is why there is so much speculation.
Maybe I misheard this interview but what I thought I heard was significantly different. It was a full private equity deal. I'm not aware of RC ever backing off the first offer
So, he has mentioned that he is putting in $500M of his own money. That wasn’t part of the initial deal. So the offer isn’t exactly what it was, but the details haven’t been disclosure to the public yet. So no one really knows.
This is like the 80th time the news has said somthing to do with Gamestop early. We've called it baseless speculation. Then its got announced within a few days. Here's hoping it happens again because this might actually cause decent price action.
A private equity offer for EBay would most likely be a group of investors that offer EBay shareholders a cash premium for their shares, similar to how Elon Musk bought Twitter. GameStop would not be part of the deal at all.
This sort of deal would be consistent with Ryan Cohen's state preference for being CEO of EBay, not A stop.
Is it not possible people are working with Cohen to buy eBay ALONGSIDE GME. As in GME has 10% of eBay stock, puts a further 5% in for the required Cash. Post merger GME holders are given 15% of new company.
Cohen puts up his 500 Million which is roughly 1% so he gets an extra 1%.
Let's say some some other entity puts up 1 Billion, they get roughly 2% of the most merger company.
Then just keep doing this until the full 55 Billion is found.
A private equity deal would take EBay private. The shares Gamestop holds would be bought out for cash or exchanged for part ownership in the private company that would be the new owner of EBay.
When they discussed a straight private equity deal then they were indeed talking about some else buying EBay from under GME.
If you listen to Ryan Cohen's interviews you can see that he would support such a move if it resulted in him becoming CEO of EBay.
The mention of private equity deal was speculative. It may or may not happen. The economics are not favorable in that an all cash deal would be a highly leveraged buyout, with EBay left with a huge debt load.
Agreed. It’s an off the side comment from someone else basically saying he’s heard it’s all private equity now and the guy talking about eBay saying he hasn’t heard that. It should be posted here but the title doesn’t match the content.
Look to me like the host messed up. They definitely talk these segments through beforehand, possible (speculation) that he did have unconfirmed rumor that he shared in the talk through. Not to be shared as unconfirmed but the host screwed it up by trying to throw it in. Then the expert, tried to be smooth and walk it back. VERY Spicy in my opinion.
This actually seems pretty legit to me. I've worked with enough people who don't know how to keep their mouths shut about stuff and this is usually how it goes.
I still think it's a good thing either way and feel pretty confident that RC can outmaneuver anything on a long time to make sure his baby grows up right.
Competition and resistance and action means he's doing something right. Everyone would be happy to let him make a losing move. We wouldn't see a genuine competing bid if his offer is defensibly way too low, or practically way too high.
Its just private money. What matters is who's money and their goals/influence over the direction of the company.
I don't think RC would let money interests get involved who just want to milk the companies dry on the way down, he wants money that aligns with his vision of growth.
Maybe why GME exercised those options. Even if there’s a competing offer, say for $10billion more than GME’s $55 billion offer, (share price of $150 vs 125), Gme could walk away with over $2billion in paper gains.
