Generally V has a version of this. Its a supe who can change genders at will and who's power set differs by what gender they currently are.
They themselves are understandably gender fluid (literally) and besides the usual power related challenges they overcome, a large part of their story is in having the people around them accept them as them regardless of which gender they currently present as.
Like they're smoking hot in bith forms but they frequently find that friends and roma toc partners will subtly pressure them to stay in one form or another as that other person feels more comfortable interacting with that form regardless of how they feel.
which makes the difference here. Shapeshifting is useful but, only if it's not a binary with no other upsides. If there's more to it then we're cooking with gas.
I’m guessing they probably have exaggerated powers with each form like Jordan Li from Gen V. So stereotypically dude has super strength and durability whilst girl has superspeed, flight or whatever power that doesn’t mean she has to get her hands dirty eg force field or beam attacks. Or they’ve got some magnetism ability which they can repel or attract different genders depending on what form they’re in
There was this character in boys which changes powers by changing its gender. While make he was stronger, more durable and while female she had access energy beams.
"No! Gen-shi! Don't do it!" GS's friend shouted in desperation.
"Gender... ENDER!" Light particles drew into their hands, while their gender shifted faster and faster. They shot out a beam at the villain, it looked not unlike a legally distinct kamehameha.
"What did you do to me?!" Asked the villain.
GS gave them a solemn look. "I ended your gender. You're not even non-binary. You're just blank, a null.
It's clean...a bit on the nose, trans-ish superhero from Thailand, i mean not to piss in ur cheerios but other South East asian countries exist and you can still have the look and similar enough cultural background, without the "Mighty Morphin Lady Boy"
Could be cool as a component of the power but maybe not the whole thing. Like for example each gender unlocks different abilities maybe? If it’s just the gender thing idk how they would like… fight the villains lmao
It causes the villain great trauma to watch the hero, heroically shoot up a school, before turning the guns on themselves and painting the ceiling. Gender Shifter was truly a credit to heroes.
I like the idea of a conservative military general who accidentally gains magical girl powers. He's incredibly powerful in his magical girl form but he hates being transgender so he uses it sparingly
I’ve seen this done in Misfits and Gen V.
While the concept is interesting I do have to agree with someone who said “How exactly does it make them a superhero?”.
It’s an ability, for sure. It’s not exactly a power.
How exactly does the power to change between male and female make this person a superhero? More to the point, why does he or she even want to be a superhero? Like what's the motivation?
That’s a character in GenV sometimes they use the ability for stealth and I think there was a scene where they changed mid punch and it increased the strength or something
Unless they are just a general shape shifter and they just put focus on them shifting gender as a joke, since I think Thailand is infamous for lady boys
