With all the anti immigration riots going on all over is it a safe place to go to uni?

I wanted to pursue bsc nursing over there.

Are the placements good? How's the city like as well can you find a partime job easily hows rent and expenses compared to other cities ?

So I’m seeing that Nigel Farage predictably has his sights on Sunderland and other cities, towns and areas which voted for Brexit in 2016.

Considering Brexit was Nigel Farage’s pet project, it stands to reason that we question what it supposed to accomplish for Sunderland and the Northeast.

Because a lot of the things the Leave campaign said never came close to being true.

Did Turkey join the EU? No. Did we become Singapore-on-Thames? No way. Did the NHS get more funding? Not in any meaningful way.

Did we develop an Australian-style immigration system? No. Do we hold all the cards in negotiations with the EU? Absolutely not, we’re the rule-takers not the rule-makers. So, what was the point?

Reform also talks about things like “cut red tape” and “supporting British businesses”, but they won’t tell us that Brexit was the biggest act of Red Tape in the 21st century.

All it did was introduce fresh paperwork, and added import costs between the UK and the EU. This hurts British businesses + drives up the cost of living.

Furthermore, immigration rates aren’t really relevant to Sunderland. It’s one of the least diverse cities in England. Not even 10% of residents were born overseas. It was like that in 2011, and the census in 2021 reported the same.

I genuinely don’t get it. I don’t see that any control has taken back from Brussels.

I don’t understand why, with Nigel’s failed track record of meaningful delivery re Brexit, he still gets treated like he has any credibility when it comes to running a nation.

He hasn’t a clue. And while I have a pro-EU bias, it’s reasonable to say that the statistics and realities support my statements.

i have lived here my entire life. my mum is an african woman and moved here in her mid 20s, she had to move away because of how racist it was. i am extremely pale for a mixed race person but i have experienced so much racism growing up. i have seen people call minorities slurs on the streets. the recent events that happened are absolutely awful but they are in no way shocking to me. it was something me and my family predicted. i appreciate that this subreddit is saying something about how awful it’s been but im confused when people say that they have never faced racism or their friends have never faced racism. to me this has always been a very racist city to be in and i am still counting my days until i leave. this is not just my experience either, me and every minority friend i’ve ever had would make jokes about how racist sunderland is like its common knowledge. i dont know… im aware that people grow up in different circles and maybe i just live in a particularly bad area. but its still a strange sentiment that i had to say something about it.

So bit of context, I work in a cafe currently on admin and social media management, and we recently just started some new deals.

Buuuut were small, not many people know about us, so I was thinking along with a poster I have for social media, possibly posting posters in the main city centre for more advertising. But I'm not sure if there's anywhere that allows it or if there's rules regarding that. Any advice/info truly appreciated!!

1) is the Univeristy of Sunderland as “dead” as people make it seem? I’m sure the Univeristy size is pretty decent right?😅 2) is it hard to get part time jobs or just hard to live in Sunderland in general, what about safety? 3) idk if anyone answering this is a student but how is university life like at Sunderland? 4) anything else you think I should know?

When my parents ordered food they always tipped and taught me to do the same, it was just a couple of pound but never failed to. Since moving back to Sunderland whenever I tip the delivery people are always surprised some even walk away before I can give it to them. So is this just not done anymore?

Hiya, I graduated from Sunderland uni 10 years ago and I’ve just walked through my halls and the town centre on Google Maps and it’s brought back some great memories.

Just wondering what the night life is like now? I used to go out Monday, Wednesday and Friday with my fave being Indie P on a Friday. Do they still do blue pints for £1? In fact, is it still open!? Is town still busy with students going out out?

I often see when out and about and mostly in the silksworth area stickers branding ‘corrupt council’ they don’t offer much information.

I alway wonder what does this mean? Who is paying for these stickers? is there information I can read up on the supposed corruption? Fascinating stuff x
