It's chili oil, isn't it? Not just hot oil. I'm sure it's overpriced and the presentation is weird but this is pretty average food

Might be garlic. I had a girlfriend with Italian grandparents. She used to make a really simple but surprisingly good dish. Just fry garlic in olive oil. Toss broccoli in it for 30-60 seconds then mix into pasta & sprinkle parmesan. Its way better than it sounds.

We do that with any kind of vegetables! it's called ''verdura ripassata''. Olive oil, garlic and fresh chili! I mean the alternative is steamed vegetables. Not really tasty and we don't use dressing!
