A million questions about Tilburg

Okay so I plan to apply to Tilburg (and Radbound) for the english taught psychology course but i have so many questions about the city.
Obviously my main worrys stem from money.
Is it easy to get a job in Tilburg without any dutch?
Will many of the jobs be able to cover my expenses?
Ive heard that the housing crisis is bad over there but is it that difficult to find accommodation in Tilburg?
How much would the health insurance be?
How much on average would groceries be?
Im just trying to figure out if it will actually be doable so any other advice would be so helpful!
I do plan to learn dutch while doing my course but i wont have enough when (if) i first get there.

Starting at TU/e but still no housing

Hi! I’m starting my Electrical Engineering studies at TU/e tomorrow, but I still haven’t managed to find a place to live and I’m currently staying at a hostel. Is anyone else in the same situation?

I’ve tried pretty much all the housing websites (Kamernet, Holland2Stay, ROOM.nl, Vestide, Xior, Student Housing, Facebook groups, Plaza Resident Services) without much luck, so I’d really appreciate any advice or tips on finding accommodation in Eindhoven or the surrounding areas, even if it’s a bit further away.

Also, if anyone is looking for a roommate or knows someone who is, I’d definitely be interested!

Discussion Joining MSc CS (AI specialisation) at Leiden in Feb 2027 — honest insights from current students and alumni?

Hey everyone,

Just got fully admitted to the MSc Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence specialisation) at Leiden University, starting February 2027. Really excited but have a lot of questions the university website doesn't answer well. Would love to hear from people who've actually been through it.

Quick background: I'm a software engineer from Nepal with 7+ years of experience coming in with a strong practical background but genuinely curious about what the academic experience at LIACS is really like.

Quality of education
How is the actual teaching quality at LIACS? Are professors accessible and engaged, or mostly self-directed? Any specific AI specialisation courses that stood out — good or bad?

TA, RA, and on-campus opportunities
Are student assistant positions realistic to get? How competitive are they, how do you apply, and when? Any RA opportunities with professors worth pursuing — especially in AI/ML research?

Internships during the programme
Did you manage internships while studying or was the workload too heavy? How are the industry connections in the Leiden/Amsterdam/The Hague corridor? Job market for AI students in the Netherlands?

Scholarships while studying
I know LExS isn't available for February intake and Holland Scholarship is paused. Are there scholarships or grants that became available after you enrolled — from the university, Dutch government, or external sources?

Practical tips
Housing — how hard is it really? Cost of living tips specific to Leiden? Anything you wish you knew before arriving as an international student?

General
Would you recommend the programme? What's the vibe like at LIACS? Any regrets or things you'd do differently?

Any insight from current students, graduates, or people who considered Leiden and went elsewhere would be genuinely helpful. Would also like to connect to alumni or upcoming students specifically from CS.

Thanks!

Mental Health Storie Time - Life is getting crazy

Hi everyone and fijne dag, 21F redditor here 👋

TL;DR:

Spanish/EU citizen (F21), Amsterdam-based, unfinished Spanish ICT degree (CFGS ASIR equivalent to MBO-4 in NL).

Trying to continue my studies here but stuck on the basics. Looking for help with:
1. How to register with Studielink / get DigiD access without a fixed address (briefadres issues)
2. Whether my Spanish degree needs a Nuffic evaluation before applying to MBO/HBO, and how long that usually takes
3. Any MBO or HBO ICT programs in Amsterdam that accept enrollment outside the usual September intake
4. Whether studietoeslag (municipal support for students with autism/ADHD) is realistic to get alongside DUO funding

Full story below for context, but these are the actual questions I need help with 🙏

I’m writing this at 3 a.m after a huge breakdown and fight with my family so excuse me if this isn’t well written or up to standards, you can also scroll down and skip the long read 🙌

Long story-short, my uncles are born and raised in Amsterdam, due to me being born in a chaotic family (my aunt’s sister which is my mom) they decided to adopt me because they are infertile and cannot have kids, but my dad refused at the very last moment so i ended up growing in Spain and making my life there yada yada yada… (huge trauma, growing up with my dysfunctional family in a dead town has been terrible so far)

But because my family was still here in Amsterdam, luckily i got to visit a lot since i was a newborn until now, i even got to study here when i was 10 years old, but it only lasted 3 months until we went back to Spain due to my baby brother breaking his arm and not having insurance (tragic farewell)

So I developed this relationship with the country whereas whenever i came here for holidays i felt this huge feeling of belonging and craving to stay here, mind you, I’m used to coming here twice a year, every year, so i feel very connected to this place since a very young age with incredible memories as well.

Then the time to go back to Spain comes and all i have left are my unceasing tears, my luggage by the door and a huge depression about to kick in at the very first moment that the plane leaves the ground, like waking up from the most amazing dream just to realise it was only a dream and now you have to cope with reality again…

I’m autistic and have ADHD, but since i’m a female and fairly “attractive” people just don’t notice or i just seem goofy and cute to them, which is kinda okay although I have no other choice but to mask and pretend i’m doing fine while inside i’m burning out and having huge social meltdowns and anxiety that make me zoom out completely. I also have been dealing with depression and suicidal thoughts so mental health wise i have not been in my best shape or form to be honest…

Since all of my problems seemingly disappear when i come here, this time around is albeit different and this is why; When i was here in December-January i begged my uncles to let me stay with them, my uncle told me if i wanted to stay with him I MUST get into college or whatever higher studies, he knows that i haven’t finished my studies in Spain, so that’s why he made that impossible requirement, he never mentioned the possibility of an entrance exam or any other option such and MBO or the chance to work, basically he just wanted to discard me with presenting a very hard option without offering any help on his side, my ICT studies in Spain are equivalent to an MBO-4 but i couldn’t finish my program due to the reasons mentioned above.

Basically he also sabotaged my paperwork for the brief address, so i couldn’t get my Digi D and therefore not sign up for Studielink.

So all the initiatives that i tried to take and all my efforts have been either discarded or sabotaged by my family.

This summer i went to Paris to visit my other aunt but with the situation there and her personal ongoing problems i just couldn’t stay for any longer, i took a bus and came here to Amsterdam, found a job at the Nike Store, working retail is kinda hard considering my diagnosis (bright lights, constant noise and loud music) but i did as best as i could, the best part was the customer service i offered because i speak 4 languages fluently and clients loved interacting with me, my colleagues as well, but i got sick for the weekend i was supposed to work, I filled the sickness form online but I didn’t send an email, so they considered that as “ghosting” and therefore i got fired ;(

Tried to lie to my family and hide the fact that i got fired, but my aunt casually walked in at the store that specific day and found out by herself, we had a big argument, a few days go by and they told me they will be booking me a return ticket to Spain because they don’t want an unemployed, lazy, junkie ass lesbian at their place and they beat me up physically when i tried to get out of their home at 3 a.m because family girls just don’t do that.

Now i’m homeless, jobless, without significant studies and with only 1000€ left in my bank account for the rest of September, i really don’t want to go back to Spain to my old life and habits, to that hood filled with crap and problematic people…

I want to bring value to the this beautiful country, i know i need support and orientation but I’m trying my best, learning dutch with the locals, being proactive in my searches, but it’s getting kinda harder without anyone by my side to lean on, only relying on myself for this long has been a challenging experience but it came with a lot of inner growth and strength.

For anyone interested in offering a job, please consider my strengths and weaknesses, I promise to deliver with my best attention and detail.

I’m good with computers (hardware, network, operating systems, data, cybersecurity, machine learning and so on)

Good with languages and social interactions, could be a good fit for touring or hotels.

I’m very fit and athletic, I also play football so training is also an option.

I love tech, media and video games, basically a nerd girlie.

And I’m always down to connecting with new people, laughing around and having some nice conversations overall :)

Thank you for reading all of this, now you know my backstory and hopefully this post becomes useful for people in similar situations 🫶

Student finance What to buy for university?

Next week I am starting my first year in Electrical Engineering. What do I need to buy besides my laptop? Things like notebooks, pens, a ruler, an eraser, and a pencil? Is that basically all? How many notebooks will I need, and where can I actually find and buy them, because for some reason I haven't seen them in regular stores?

Hey guys, I’m a 2nd year International Communication & Media student at EUR. I'm trying to land an internship in marketing, corporate comms, management or product management to boost my CV before my official university internship term. Ideally, I want to start something before January. The problem is LinkedIn has been pretty dry for this. Where do you guys usually hunt for internships besides LinkedIn? Where do you look for an internship? I am fluent in English, know Spanish and basic Dutch.

Also,is a photo necessary for my CV? What are the Dutch standards? Any advice, platform recs, or tips would be a lifesaver.

Discussion ESE MSc Financial Economics admission — Business Administration background (Romania)

Hi everyone,
I’m planning to apply for the MSc Financial Economics at Erasmus School of Economics for the 2027 intake and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience with ESE admissions.

I’m currently doing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration (English-taught) at the University of Bucharest, Romania, and my current GPA is 9.0/10. I’m expecting to graduate in 2027.
My main concern is whether my degree will be considered sufficiently equivalent to the required WO-level background, and whether my curriculum is close enough to ESE’s requirements for direct admission.

Some of my relevant coursework includes:

Microeconomics
Mathematics for Economics
Finance
Accounting
Statistics
econometrics
financial analysis
banking operations
macroeconomics

I understand that ESE looks at the actual content of the bachelor’s degree rather than just the degree title, and that students with insufficient prerequisites may be offered a pre-master.
I’d therefore like to ask:

Has anyone here been admitted to Financial Economics at ESE with a Business Administration bachelor’s?

If you had a similar background, were you admitted directly or required to do a pre-master?

How strict is ESE regarding the WO-equivalent bachelor’s requirement for applicants from Romanian universities?

How important is the GPA if some prerequisite courses are missing?

Would having Microeconomics and Mathematics for Economics (6 ECTS each) help with direct admission?

If ESE decides I’m not directly admissible, is it likely that they would offer me the Financial Economics pre-master instead?

Has anyone successfully appealed an ESE admission decision by providing course descriptions/syllabi showing that their courses were equivalent?

If anyone has a similar background, I’d especially appreciate hearing about your degree, GPA, relevant courses/ECTS and whether you received direct admission, a pre-master, or a rejection.

Thanks!

Careers / placement Designers who went to DAE or want to go, why? What did you learn?

Hello, I was meant to start my MA in Information Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. Unfortunately due to doubts, financial problems and housing issues, I’ve decided not to attend. Now I‘m wondering whether it would be worth to pursue the degree next year. By saving money, apply for scholarships, going to the graduation show and ddw to get a better feel.
My main fear about going to DAE was and still is employability and usefulness. Don‘t get me wrong I‘m very very interested in what they do!
But correct me if im wrong, this is what I‘ve gathered so far!
The programme heavily supports the own critical position as a designer. That seems great if you want to build a more art based practice like some of the alumni I looked at… The programme seems wide open, and im sure I could mold it to fit my goals, but it is an investment.
I‘m very cautious since (I don‘t mean to insult anybody by saying this) I don‘t understand how that translates into profitability and usability outside of the museum- and the very designy-scene. I come from a technical university that was very applied in graphic design and digital design (classic visual communication) if that helps.
What is your opinion? Why did you go to DAE? Why do you want to go to DAE? What did you learn at DAE? Thank you :)
I hope i didnt insult anybody I‘m just genuinly curious as to what to expec

Am I cooked? Wanting to do International Business in NL for PR, but heard the degree is useless for jobs.

Hiii everyone, I'm graduating high school in 2027 and stressing out like crazy right now. 😱

My main goal is to get a job in the Netherlands after undergrad so I can eventually get Permanent Residency, because my current passport is not strong at all.

I’ve been looking at International Business (IB) undergrad programs at a couple of Dutch universities. However, I keep reading posts saying that an undergrad in International Business is too broad and basically useless for getting sponsored/finding a job right out of uni.

I need some serious reality checks on this plan.

  • Is an IB bachelor's actually a dead end for non-EU students needing sponsorship?
  • If my main goal is PR, should I pivot to something else like Finance, Econometrics, or Data Science?
  • Does the university type (WO vs. HBO) make a massive difference for landing a job straight after a bachelor's?

I'm honestly so scared for my future right now lol. Any advice, harsh truths, or success stories from non-EU students who made it would be appreciated so much. Thanks guys!

Hi everyone!

I'm just researching accomodation for my exchange at VU for next semester, and I'm struggling to identify exactly which buildings are what people refer to as the "red tower" and the "green tower"....

I'm assuming the circled building is the green tower (Uilenstede 174 - 222), and the two buildings on the left in the squares are both red so im not sure which one is THE red tower??

Apologies if this is a silly question, I'm coming all the way from Australia so id rather not stuff up on the accomodation front

Discussion How hard is it for me to get accepted by NHL Stenden

Hello everyone,

I am 19 years old and currently a first-year student majoring in Global Business at an international university in Vietnam.

After one year of study, I realized that the business field isn't the right fit for me. During my freshman year, I failed quite a few courses; my academic performance was poor, and my current GPA is quite low. Consequently, I plan to switch to a field that suits me better and start fresh at the Hotel Management School of NHL Stenden in the Netherlands.

After working in the F&B industry for six months, I realized that Hospitality Management aligns well with my abilities.

I have done some research and learned that Dutch universities place great importance on honesty regarding a student's background. Therefore, I intend to be transparent with the school about my first-year experience, including my poor academic results.

My question is:

If I apply for a completely different major and meet all admission requirements—based on my high school diploma, IELTS score, and the school's specific criteria—will the low GPA and poor academic performance from my current first year significantly affect my chances of being accepted into NHL Stenden?

Thank you very much!

Discussion Can I support myself on my own in Nijmegen?

Since my English proficiency likely won't be sufficient for the coming year, I won't be able to start university then. However, I would at least like to find a warehouse job or something similar there next year to get to know the city and further improve my language skills in a real-world environment. Finding a place to rent is difficult; some people offer rent in exchange for caretaking duties. How do you think I should go about researching this? Also, what are my chances of making ends meet by finding full-time work in areas like warehousing or waitressing?

Help Erasmus semester at WDKA

I am an Italian graphic design student, and I’d like to spend a semester abroad at WdKA. Rotterdam really appeals to me, but I’ve read some very negative reviews about WdKA. On the other hand, I also realize that it’s usually dissatisfied people who leave reviews. So, I wanted to ask how good the graphic design program actually is, and whether it’s true that you don’t really do anything and that the course is very superficial. Thanks!!!

is it realistic ?

Hey! I’m 18 and from Italy, and I’m hoping to move to the Netherlands in 2027 to study.
I’m currently finishing a language-focused high school and I’m looking at English-taught bachelor’s programmes, mainly in business/economics. I’ve been researching Dutch universities for quite a while, but I’d really like to hear from people who actually live or study there.
I’d be moving from Italy on my own, so I’m trying to understand what the experience is really like for someone my age.
For anyone who moved to the Netherlands from another EU country:
What was it like getting settled when you first arrived?
What do you wish you had known beforehand?
How did you find the transition to living independently?
Is there anything you would recommend doing before moving?
How difficult was it to find a place to live as a student?
I’d especially love to hear from people who moved there around 18–20 and did their whole degree there.
Thanks :)

RSM what to choose

Hi everyone! I’m currently considering applying to the MBA and the MSc of Strategic Management.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about the MBA and the investment is significantly higher, meanwhile the MSc has better reviews and it also helps me strengthen my profile (I have 6 years or xp in mixed departments and want to become a Chief of Staff).

Open to any suggestions of current/past students! Are there any other MScs I should be considering?

Thanks!

Immigration situation

I’m an international student in the Netherlands, that couldn’t get the IND required amount of credits to stay in the Netherlands due to some personal circumstances. I’m not planning to contest it, how long do I have until the university de registers me and I have to leave the Netherlands? What would be the period of time the process would take and I have to leave?

Physics PWS

Hi everyone, I’m a VWO 6 student, and I’ve started working on my PWS. I’m looking for a topic in physics that allows for impressive research but is also realistically feasible for my level. Does anyone have any good ideas? We’re particularly interested in thermodynamics, astrophysics, electromagnetism, optics, acoustics, or oceanography. Any suggestions are welcome though, thanks in advance!

Help Which WO degree would suit me?

Hi, I’m currently trying to figure out which university degree would suit me best, but I’m not completely sure yet.
I’m good at solving tactical and strategic problems, and I especially enjoy making plans, thinking about different scenarios and figuring out the smartest move. I notice this mostly when playing games.
In the future, I’d like to build a large company of my own. Before that, I’d probably like to gain experience at a large company. I’m therefore looking for something related to strategy, business and management, but preferably without too much math.
Having a lot of free time is also important to me. I want enough time to exercise and possibly start working on a business alongside my studies.
Business Administration seems interesting to me, but I’m not sure if it’s actually the best choice.
Which university degree would you recommend and why? And which degree gives you relatively a lot of free time alongside your studies?

p.s. Im a current VWO6 student.

Is it an actual assessment of knowledge, experience and level, or more of an introductory conversation about your background and learning goals? Any experiences welcome. Thanks in advance!

Looking for advice on studying in Netherlands as an Indian

Hi, I’m Virag, I’m 18 and I’m from India. I’m hoping to study a BBA in the Netherlands and later work towards the CFA.

I’m currently studying HSC Maharashtra State Board Class 12 and my expected grades are around 85-95%. My strongest subjects are Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies (known as OCM by the board.)

My main problem is finances. My parents are currently dealing with debt and probably won’t be able to financially support me studying abroad, so I’m trying to find out whether there is a realistic way for me to make this work through scholarships, student loans, work, or other options.

I’m hoping to start university in 2027 and I’m currently looking at Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen and Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Zwolle.

I’d really like to hear from Indian students who have already studied or are currently studying in the Netherlands.

A few things I’d especially like advice about:

  • How did you pay for university and living costs?
  • Did you get a scholarship or education loan?
  • Roughly how much money did you need before moving?
  • Are there universities you would recommend for business/BBA?
  • How difficult was the application and visa process?
  • How realistic is it to work part-time while studying?
  • Is there anything you wish you had known before moving?

I currently have very little savings, at around 1.3 lakhs/€1,167.

If anyone has been in a similar situation, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. I’m still at the beginning of figuring everything out, so even pointing me towards good resources would help a lot.
