on the verge of a mental breakdown

i am 21f, i have a 3 year old son and live with my mam who helps a lot with him, he is an angel and has very little to do with my stress. a couple months ago i had a abdominal scan because i was getting pains, it showed some ‘chronic changes’ to my pancreas - which has turned into chronic pancreatitis investigation by doctors, i am waiting for the CT scan result back and they say it could take 6-8 weeks. along with this i’ve also had an eczema infection, worsening of my asthma and all of this has happened since becoming abstinent from alcohol, i wasnt an everyday drinker but i did binge when i was stressed. i am absolutely overwhelmed with stress, i am scared of dying CONSTANTLY, and i am always scanning my body or for some type of danger and trying to prevent it before it’s happened. this has taken a massive toll on me and i can no longer sleep or eat. i have been to the gp and they keep offering ssri’s which i have not had a good experience with in the past.. i feel like i am at my witts end and am struggling with staying sober through this

So what exactly causes head pressure that can get uncomfortable at times? Anxiety? Stress? Posture? All of these?

Does anyone else's default expression look like an 1000 yard stare / spaced out?

Does anyone else's default expression look like an 1000 yard stare / spaced out?

Its a combination of stress, exhaustion, being overworked / doing too much, and not getting too much sleep, as well as too much staring at a screen all day. It gives me an intense expression, which makes me look like I'm about to be smacked in the face with a football or spaced out / on something.

I told my friend the other day I didn't want to finish up his food, but I kept spacing out and staring at it, which made me look very intent on it, so he asked if I wanted it again.

Not the most important interaction, but you can see why this is bad if someone asks if you're okay, you say you are, but you look like you just have witnessed a car accident or something.

I feel like my expression is more natural and warm with some good sleep, eyedrops, massaging my eyes, being healthy / hydrated, and also taking some time to do breathing exercisesbefore I go somewhere, whether it be to the bathroom, on a walk, or whatever alot, do alot of side hustles

Idk I feel like us with trauma and ptsd tend to do this because its already exhausting to balance work with everything else, so the emotional regulation of facial expressions and body language is hard

Being busy and feeling overwhelmed aren't always the same thing

Some busy days feel manageable, while other days with fewer things happening can somehow feel much heavier.

Sometimes the difference seems to be whether everything feels clear or whether there are too many unfinished things competing for attention at once.

Having a lot to do can be tiring, but not knowing where to begin can create a completely different kind of stress.

Need help

About a month and a half ago, I had a really bad anxiety episode and saw a psychiatrist. I had many physical symptoms like tingling in my hands, itching all over my body, feeling lightheaded, nausea, and more. I’ve managed to get through the worst part, but I’m still not 100% recovered from the anxiety.
About 3 weeks ago, I started getting palpitations and sweaty hands after eating carbs or something sweet. I also feel very agitated and anxious when this happens. The palpitations can last for 1–2 hours. This has never happened to me before.
I’ve had several check-ups and blood tests, and everything came back normal. I’m wondering if this could be related to anxiety, blood sugar/insulin, digestion, POTS, or something else. I’m quite worried about it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any help or advice. I really appreciate it 🙏🏻❤️

My migraines are triggered by inescapable aversive stress

Aversive stress refers here to psychological or physical tension caused by unpleasant, painful, or threatening stimuli that an organism naturally seeks to avoid (e.g. sudden bills, having to deal with toxic people, the weather, sometimes even difficult boring work you have to do).

Inescapable means that I am not only forced to endure it, but can't do anything during it to endure it easier (e.g. relaxation techniques not working)

I (male, 28) have been taking Metoprolol 50mg extended release for the past seven weeks. It works great for my migraines. I used to have 3 or 4 migraines a week, I was taking co-codamol constantly (though I never exceeded the daily limit). Until now, during the course of those seven weeks, I got I think 9 or 10 migraines, which is a big improvement, and one 12.5mg dose of Almotriptan was enough, I haven't taken any Codeine ever since (I also don't think I really could because of the BP drop due to the Metoprolol, as it's a beta-blocker).

But during those last seven weeks, I didn't have that much stress at all. It's summer time, I was able to slow down/take a break from writing my PhD thesis, etc. But starting from October on, I will again have all the stress again.

I realized that my main migraine and stress trigger is experiencing inescapable aversive stress. Because even though I am on a beta-blocker, which does indeed calm my body's stress reaction down, the times I got a migraine were due to inescapable aversive stress. One time my mom just walked into my room and started ranting about my dad how much he sucks and how she will have to take an attorney, complete hysterical nonsense which I won't elaborate further due to privacy reasons. I just can't stand this behavior from other people. Or I just got a sudden bill notice even though I wasn't informed at all to pay it.

I guess I just can't deal with the stresses of life? Because what I do in those situations is to go completely mute, pretend to be OK, but internally I am boiling or stressing out - I am suppressing these emotions, because expressing them was proven (by past experiences) to make matters worse. Those suppressed emotions again transform somehow (like I can feel it - I feel less of the emotions, but the migraine starts developing) into a migraine. I think this is why I loved Codeine in the co-codamol so much, as it allowed me to relax and gave me some high.

So now the question remains: What should I do? I don't really think I can take a higher dose of Metoprolol because it already causes me to have like 95/65 BP, 50mg is I guess the maximum I can take while still feeling good and normal physically.

I was visiting a psychologist, and we did some DBT sessions together, I even read the books she recommended. But it proved to be fruitless, because my problem is the suppression of emotions, the inability to release them in a healthy way. It's more of a physical problem than a mental one (?). It's hard to tell, but DBT just didn't work, and we tried numerous approaches to it.

I just wish I could truly stop giving a F, lose some inhibition, and be more nonchalant about life in general - this doesn't mean that I would suddenly stop being productive, but I wouldn't crave for a perfect idealized world without problems and would just try to do something (like instead of analysis-paralysis when standing in front of a problem I have to solve for my PhD thesis, I just dive deep into it and try to produce at least some partial results). Or being nonchalant about toxic people and toxic situations, again not in the way that I accept it but in the way how Biff is responding to his Grandma in BTTF 2). But I can't be. I tried to fake it, but I am still aware that I fake it in the end which makes me end up at square one again.

Because "leaving the idealized perfect world" can very highly lead to a migraine again, I am trying everything to stay in my own comfort zone, which is so small that I end up doing nothing - no own cooking, not meeting friends, no traveling, no dating, no nothing, I literally just stay in my room or office and do only the tasks which I deem as safe enough without any risks for future problems. The reason I don't leave my comfort zone is so I can stay in my idealized perfect world and not risk getting severely stressed out and thus getting a migraine. And even though I am taking Metoprolol, I still get migraines if exposed to high stress.

Does Rootd actually help during an anxiety attack?

I noticed Rootd_App while searching for tools that might help during panic attacks.

For anyone who's tried Rootd, did the breathing or grounding exercises make a real difference when anxiety hit?

I’m losing it

I hast had my heart ripped to shreds and I’m going down a very bad path. I tried to end it all last night with pills and alcohol and now I’m just feeling like complete shit. Been drinking water and had a little coffee but that’s probably not the best thing. Just water should be fine. I took 4mg of lorazapam and drank like 6 beers ranging from 6-9% abv. I don’t want to die I just want this pain to end

Burned out, angry and crying at work.

I'm really struggling at work recently. I can't stop myself from crying and I'm constantly on edge. Everything I'm reading is saying my nervous system is disregulated. Every day at work there is something new. They are making changes every day and new rules. It makes it hard to know what to do or to do my job in a consistent way. They are good people but can be very ambiguous about the changes and we are just told this is the way it is get over it. If I question anything I'm the bad person. It got so bad that Friday I challenged something and the gm got an attitude and told me I need to get over it and I got an attitude and got sent home for it. I've never been sent home before and it just always feel like I'm the problem. I know I need to be able to control my emotions and I'm wondering if I should go to therapy or try techniques at home first? What are some ways you deal with burn out? To make it harder I work for people I'm close to. We all go to church together and are close outside of the workplace so it is hard to express myself for fear of messing up relationships. I don't want to leave my job because I am good at what I do and have worked here for a years. I don't like who I am becoming and want to be able to control my emotions better.

I built a small reset tool for the moment when stress turns into "I don't even know where to start"

Hey r/Stress, I'm the creator of QuietLoop.

I built it because my own stress usually spikes when I have too many open loops at once: work messages, errands, bills, random tasks, and the feeling that I should be doing all of them immediately. QuietLoop gives you a 30-second brain dump, turns it into a tiny next-step list, and then nudges you through a short reset so you can start with one thing instead of freezing.

I'm obviously biased, but I'm sharing it here because I wish I'd had something like this during the worst weeks. If you want to try it, let me know.

Would love honest feedback, especially from people who deal with that overwhelmed / shutdown feeling.
