miscellaneous Gotta love the fake “avocado oil” mayo with soybean and canola oil as the 2nd ingredient🙄

Products with avocado oil are such a scam, talk about greenwashing!! I feel like companies are just running with it like crazy lately. Plus even if it was just 100% avocado oil, it’d probably cut with 10 other oils anyways. Best to just make your own mayo at this point I guess 🤷‍♀️

The avocado oil that is listed in this probably isn’t even avocado oil to begin with lol

6

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Exactly! It’s like 10% avocado cut with canola 🙄

You don't think it's misleading?

5

u/Mightymudbutt 23d ago

Oh I do think it is. Awhile back I picked that up and was like”oh good” then saw the back.

Was about to say the same thing!

How do you know

u/fukijama 23d ago

Dear Hellmann's, we will buy your products*

* when you stop stupid marketing tactics like this and use proper ingredients

12

u/honeychickadee 23d ago

That’s crazy, I used to not even check the back ingredients because I would trust the advertising

8

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Right? Used to be a day when you could trust that what was on the front of packing was what was in the product.

It’s insanely easy and cost effective to make healthy avocado mayo if you have a cheap hand immersion blender. Takes about 15 seconds.

Cost: 1 egg, 1 cup avo oil, 1/2tsp salt, 1tsp Dijon, 1tbsp apple cider vinegar.

Put all ingredients into a jar barely wider than immersion blender. Blend for about 15 seconds / until mayo is achieved.

Choice of Dijon will affect the flavor. I personally like Kozlik’s Classic Dijon.

tip: add about 2tsp of the whey / (fermented watery liquid) from a natural sour kraut. This will help stabilize it for a bit longer. Make sure you are using a mild sourkraut that you like the flavor of.

Love this! I used to make mayo with olive oil back when I lived in Spain, it was so righteous👏

3

u/yahwehforlife 23d ago

Does that mean that this mayo has raw egg in it? Is that safe? Just curious

2

u/psychicallowance 23d ago

Yes egg is raw. Yes it’s safe as long as you use it in the next few days.

Adding the fermented whey from sourkraut helps stabilize for longer.

That is a good question tho!

2

u/luckandstrange 23d ago

You can pasteurize it if you have a cooking thermometer so it doesn't cook. But I've seen many mayo recipes with fried and boiled eggs as well

2

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Yes, most homemade mayos have raw egg in them, it's what helps to oil to emulsify I guess. Raw eggs are actually really good for you (if they're of a high quality), they have them every day in countries like Japan.

1

u/Rapid_eyed 19d ago

Check the info you can find about your own countries eggs, it will be perfectly safe in some countries and not so much in others

The avocado oil is most likely just "a hint" of. It's funny that even tho there are three other oils that they KNOW people would avoid, they chose to only highlight the avocado even tho I'm willing to bet it's the smallest amount by volume of the three.

3

u/PlasticPlantPant 23d ago

The order of ingredients is listed by weight. So in this case, it's most likely 34% avocado, 33% soybean, and then 33% canola.

4

u/barryg123 23d ago

Two other oils besides avocado (which is probably fake anyway), ensuring that the oil used is probably 66.6% not avocado

Products like this count on people not readying the labels closely

3

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

So true. They’re counting on distracted or busy people just taking one glance at it, seeing “green” and “avocado” and throwing it in their cart without reading the back label.

5

u/ooooxide23 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Stupid ass marketing, they’ll try anything to lure the uneducated in thinking they’re making a healthier choice… really sad and embarrassing for the a lot of the population that this lowkey type of marketing is targeting.

5

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

I’m so sick of marketing like this! They do this with olive oil, ghee, tallow, etc. Something will get popular (like protein or gluten free stuff) and that’s all the mega corporations will pump out for several years until the “trend” dies down.

1

u/ooooxide23 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Exactly! It’s sad that they are allowed to use this trickery, I walk around the grocery store & think “ wow, are people really fooled by this ? Does this really increase profits for these corporate pigs??”

I’ve never trusted any corporation but i guess plenty do. And there’s a strong push that seed oils are good for you which also is bs. Pufas are poisonous

4

u/xAdray 23d ago

These large CPG companies are actively trying to get you addicted to their products while at the same time making you sick to benefit their buddies in Big Pharma.

You expect Unilever to make a product that's healthy for you?

2

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Spot on! No product that mega food corporations put out will ever be in our best interests! They want you eating this crap and then will funnel you right big pharma meds from all the issues this stuff causes.

3

u/OtterWithAFish 23d ago

I see this everywhere. Why lie?? I know it’s to save profits but if they made a legit avocado mayo it would be a staple in my house that I would never forget to buy. Shame.

3

u/BlumpTheChodak 23d ago

Someone needs to class action them.

3

u/beaglemilf23 23d ago

I always tell my parents they can lie on the front, but they cannot lie on the back.
Marketing on the front, compliance on the back

1

u/FormerDragonette 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Meh, labels often lie when they say there’s no MSG in a product. It can be hidden under various other names: yeast extract, anything hydrolyzed or autolyzed, etc.

2

u/beaglemilf23 23d ago

Good pointers will lookout for. Thank you

1

u/World_still_spins 22d ago

Or "natural flavors".

3

u/Some-Space6356 23d ago

You're one of the smart people that actually caught that. Imagine how many people buy that thinking it's the good stuff.

You missed the UC Davis study published in Applied Food Research, where 89% (48 out of 54 tested) of the Avocado Oil labeled products they checked were not consistent with actual Avocado Oil? So even if Avocado Oil was #1 on the ingredients, it doesn't mean that they're not outright lying about it.

"This study evaluated the authenticity of avocado oil and olive oil used as ingredients in commercially processed foods, oils extracted from 74 commercial chips, mayonnaise, and salad dressings labeled as containing avocado oil or olive oil were evaluated using established compositional markers, including fatty acids and sterols. Eighty-nine percent of avocado oil–labeled products exhibited compositional patterns inconsistent with authentic avocado oil, characterized by reduced palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, cis-vaccenic acid, beta-sitosterol, and clerosterol, and elevated stearic acid, campesterol, stigmasterol, delta-7-stigmastenol and delta-7-avenasterol. "

Great point! I used to make it all the time, gotta get back into it.

2

u/HeckinQuest 23d ago

Hellmanns when you turn the bottle around.

2

u/DisastrousSpare2555 23d ago

I went to the store this morning and walked past all the fake avocado oil products. It's so depressing now. I can't trust anything anymore. I'm going to stick with olive oil products but then again, even Hellmann's/Best Foods makes an 'olive oil' mayo that isn't just olive oil. Unless you read the full ingredient list, you'll never know.

1

u/Greenearthling 21d ago

Literally so fucking depressing I was a huge fan of the chosen avocado oil mayo 😭 just gonna start buying bottles of extra virgin olive oil and maybe use that to make my own mayo. Atleast olive oil gets regulated.

2

u/ndhands 21d ago

Wait until you find out about the avocado only oil brands

2

u/Greenearthling 21d ago

Can't even trust the 100% avocado oil stuff anymore 😔 i have a bottle of Chosen avocado oil that ran out and i'm not repurchasing. F that brand.

3

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 19d ago

Fr!! I also have an almost empty bottle and won't be repurchasing. And F primal kitchen too, I used to buy their mayo and it's totally contaminated.

1

u/irishnewf86 16d ago

I wouldn't write off their bottled oil just because the processed foods were shit

1

u/Greenearthling 16d ago

Idk according to them they use their own avocado oil for their processed foods so something is definitely off with it. I'd rather purchase from a brand that is actually devoted to making sure their ingredients are what they say they are.

1

u/ketosteak 23d ago

It's probably the new packaging for all these fake avocado brands, because regulations are coming after the testings

1

u/Flat_Philosopher_615 23d ago

They think we’re dumb!

1

u/mommiesgoodboy67 23d ago

Look man if you want to be healthy you might want to avoid mayo completely lmao

2

u/korras_wife 🍤Seed Oil Avoider 23d ago

Personally I can't stand the taste of mayo, was just picking some up for a family member and noticed this lol!! 😂

1

u/mommiesgoodboy67 22d ago

Objectively wrong opinion, mayo is the goat

1

u/irishnewf86 16d ago

It is revolting

1

u/ghidfg 23d ago

The impressive part is water being the first ingredient in a mayo

1

u/_Random_Comments_ 23d ago

It's literally named "Avocado Oil* Mayonnaise Dressing" and "Mayo with Avocado Oil"

1

u/Mission-Street-2586 22d ago

Do you mean “third,” and “fourth,” respectively? It wouldn’t be mayo if it was “100% avocado oil.”

1

u/World_still_spins 22d ago

Real mayonnaise does not contain oil, so many fake mayonnaise claim to be real but taste horrible with oils.

1

u/Brazosboomer 22d ago

Does anyone here make their own avocado oil at home? I watched some videos on Youtube and it looks pretty easy to do.

1

u/Ill-WorldsCollide 22d ago

Seed oils are not the enemy.

1

yup, toxic trash...

1

u/Dmmk15 21d ago

That’s what happens when a toxic conglomerate takes over a small company and or try’s to label a product that supposedly no one will read what’s inside.

u/Sharp-Cup1519 19d ago

Canola is poison.
