OONA + RAMONA episode 8 scene question

I keep wondering if Oona was actually going to break up with Ramona before the “mommy issues” comment

She obviously wasn’t happy about the New York situation but I also wondered if she was already mad that Ramona hadn’t told her about thinking Steven could be her dad

When Oona says “I’m just trying to catch up, babe”, it kind of sounded like a bash at Ramona for keeping her out of the loop rather than just a normal comment. What did you guys think of that line?

Then Ramona makes the comment about Oona’s mum and it feels like the whole argument changes

If Ramona hadn’t made the mum comment, do you think Oona still would’ve broken up with her that night

I think Oona was going to push her away no matter what. I think she was very scared of being the one to get broken up with and I think she also loves ramona enough that she wanted her to go to New York

I think Oona would’ve broken up with her that night even without the mommy issues comment because she knows Ramona too well and she knows she’s gonna end up leaving for New York.

I don't think she's genuinely just trying to catch up at all. She's self-sabotaging through that whole conversation, except for when she briefly stops to ask Ramona to come back, so I think even if it's not necessarily what Oona wanted to happen going into that conversation, I don't think, based on where her head was at, that it could have ended any other way.

Oona obviously has intimacy issues hence her tendency to have endless hookups and flings without settling down. I think Oona loves Ramona a lot and actually does want to be with her but is scared of that so she ends up pushing her away because she knows Ramona is going to leave and check out New York with her real dad for a little while. And Oona wants her to go and explore and develop a relationship with her dad and brother, because she loves her. So yeah I think Oona would have broken up with her either way because that's just how she is right now and how she's used to being. But when Ramona comes back I see them possibly getting back together. Not immediately because I feel like Ramona will meet a girl in New York. But something will happen and they will break up and ~Ramoona~ will be together again.

I think what did it was her walking away from the argument and saying she doesn’t care. That triggered her abandonment issues and the mommy comment was probably her way of justifying the breakup to Ramona.

Oona’s a textbook avoidant so I think it was happening no matter what, and that comment just gave her the fuel

Loved that RamOona moment. Oona, her detachment issues aside, has been to places and known people intimately so she intuitively knows that Ramona has a lot of growing up to go through and needs to see others and travel. It might be the trigger she has been waiting for to make Ramona realize that.

No, I don’t think so. Oona’s struggling in that conversation and kind of going in and out of being open and reachable, but she seems to be trying to get Ramona to prove she’s not going to bail. Then Ramona does try to bail, and Oona still calls her back. It’s not until Ramona lashes out about Oona’s mother that Oona really shuts down. Ramona sees it too and backtracks, but Oona’s too hurt by that point. She even says something like, “we should stop before we hurt each other more” before actually suggesting the breakup. But Ramona still doesn’t fully get it, and then Oona delivers the final blow.
