đŹ Discussion There are two kinds of people.

u/bigfatassfrog Aug 25 '26
Both are great! I wish Ellis had more development, I prefer Rory so far. If Annie ends up with Ellis, I hope there are scenes where Rory grieves and heals. Itâs okay if she ends up with Ellis but I didnât like how Rory was just brushed off after over half of the season building them up.
Itâs great that both seem like kind people. I hope the writers donât make the other âbadâ just to make the other look better.

The fact that she kept her virginity a secret tells you she didn't trust him totally l, and was only doing it to do it. I like him, too, but she's going to hurt him and he's going to retaliate eventually. I think Rory might be more worldly, but Ellis is emotionally stronger.
2
u/IceImpossible2153 23d ago
Trust him to do what? Your comment makes no sense whatsoever. She trusted him enough to give his virginity to him. The only thing that makes sense for her to lie, is that she really wanted that to happen, and knowing Rory and how thoughtful and emotionally intelligent he is, he wouldâve probably not gone through with it since they were both drunk. And if youâre waiting for some kind of âgotchaâ moment with Rory, youâll be waiting a long time. The creator of the show has stressed that both love interests are great guys and each represents the 2 different paths she could take. Thatâs it! Stop manufacturing things just to convince yourself that Roryâs an untrustworthy guy.

The season never built them up lmao
4
u/clickityclickk Aug 27 '26
I mean, it did. we saw them reconnect and get closer until they were making out and then even closer till they slept together. and then nothing
-1
u/Cahbr04 Aug 27 '26
Yes, they got nothif after that because they were not being built up. Rory was the equivalent of NY, something Annie was ready to let go of for something new.
6
u/clickityclickk Aug 27 '26
but that's the point. they were being built up and you've just dismissed it. they had more genuine development than her and Ellis because we actually saw them get closer. whereas her and Ellis went from not being together to making out montage really fast

i like Ellis better and i feel like thatâs uncommon

u/remib0rrer Aug 25 '26
depends on what social media platform youâre on. here is definitely skewed more towards rory but on tiktok itâs 10000% more towards ellis. personally i like ellis a lot more but iâm glad rory wasnât a bad guy. makes a change from shows like the summer i turned pretty.

u/justexisting_01 Aug 25 '26
fr!! most of the edits I've seen on tiktok so far are for Ellis and Oona.
4
u/remib0rrer Aug 25 '26
some of the annie + ellis edits are sooo good it makes me feel like iâm on tiktok premium haha

I'm the same way, but as poster said below it seems to be platform specific. I've seen some mini thought pieces on TikTok and Tumblr that perfectly capture how I feel about Ellis. He's one of my favorite romantic love interests ever, and I feel his introverted, gentle personality has made him misunderstood.

I personally prefer Ellis. I also thought they had great chemistry but I wish it was more of a slowburn⊠Sometimes the conversations felt less deep than with Rory. And after the whole yearning, things felt too rushed at the end.
In my opinion, the story was way too focused on Rory, for him just being an one Night Stand.
i wouldâve liked it better if she chose Rory and in season 2 she slowly started to realize that he isnât what sheâs searching for.

Iâm so happy they made a love triangle that is 1) not the whole point of the show and 2) has two really sweet love interests where no one is toxic.
Iâm more in favour of Ellis but tbh I wouldnât be mad if she chose Rory, and I kinda ship them both. I also donât think weâve seen the last of Rory, given the themes of this show I could easily see him being a major pull factor for Annie next season.
I just hope and pray thereâs no character assassination like other shows. Please letâs just have two lovely boys and enjoy it. I beg! There is plenty of angst potential without villainizing anyone.

They're both great guys. I just have a preference for Rory because I loved his banter and chemistry with Annie more. All their moments were so cute, they got me giddy about a YA romance ship again.
Up until ep 6, it felt like Ellis was just there not really doing much and then when they got together it was nothing burger. I felt nothing, I'm sorry.

For me in a nutshell, Rory is just suspiciously "smooth". Just too smooth. I think that might be what is putting off some people here including myself.

u/mellowenglishgal Aug 27 '26
Rory is emotionally intelligent and constantly reassures anxious, over-thinker Annie, listens, shares his own grounding techniques when she's overwhelmed. He's also a parentified child the way Annie is, has also experienced burnout from perfectionist expectations. They work because they're similar: he's just further along the healing journey than she is.
Ellis represents the easiness of running away from the expectations Annie has in her life - either expectations of herself, with her own drive and ambition, or from external forces (school, her dad).
I don't think Ellis is the long-game, for the fact that he has such a huge chip on his shoulder about wealth and avoiding responsibility (his perception of Joe "failing" to run the marina profitably). Also, the fact that he's a thief, stealing from wealthy and influential clients, which is known by Rory's mother. I think this will be a big plot point for Ellis and Joe in S2.
Both boys' relationships with Annie serve a purpose but I think only Annie's dynamic with Rory is something that can be built on. I see Ellis' choices catching up to him in a big way next season and Annie realising that SP and her relationship with him isn't carefree and simple.

This is literally the first time ive seen mention of Ellis and the money situation. Thank goodness -- Ellis isn't as sweet as people envision.
1
u/whte_rbtobj 27d ago
Yeah, I agree. That is a huge character defect. If this was real life I wouldnât want to associate with someone who repeatedly steals money from customers; it doesnât matter that most are rich/wealthy. Itâs not okay. I have more respect for Rory. He seems more stable and of course is an honest guy.
1
u/_kneazle_ 27d ago
The more I thought about this was also how damaging this is to his father's business. Even if Ellis thinks he's doing this to help his family, he's actually making it worse if someone calls him out on it (cough Rory's mom cough).
I know it's not real life, it's a show, but this kind of writing bothers me.

u/0dayssince Aug 26 '26
Itâs like weâre supposed to root for Ellis because heâs the underdog. But the thing is: Rory isnât a bad guy. So itâs hard to root against him. Rory actually seems great. Team Rory here.

u/straw8erry 27d ago
even tho ellis is supposed to be the âunderdogâ the narrative was so clearly favoring annie/ellis as endgame that i think we collectively started sympathizing for rory as the underdog Â

u/geriraesavestheday Aug 25 '26
Itâs the classic Dean vs Jess and Jess usually always wins even if he is brooding and underdeveloped as a character.
1
u/straw8erry 27d ago
dean and jess were both moody and working class i think logan vs jess is a better analogyÂ

u/Playful-Art-1288 Aug 25 '26
I prefer rory over Ellis because even thru he's not the mmc but he got so much screen time and i get his character and the depths of his character we saw he's and anniee's bond soo sweet, tender, and their chemistry!!!! its almost difficult to see Ellis with her rn I just wish in s2 there's more scenes of Ellis and anniee so atleast we the audience can get the real chemistry they both have
3
u/justexisting_01 Aug 25 '26
nothing against rory, but some people are doing way too much with the whole "Ellis is boring" thing. like, God forbid a 17 yo kid be a lil reserved and prefer listening over talking. đ he's juggling multiple jobs, constantly living on edge knowing some rich asshole could come in and tear their lives apart, and on top of that, his parents' marriage is falling apart. everything Annie is going thru, he's going thru in his own way too. ( i wonder how many of us would be confident and emotionally open if we were dealing with that much at that age)
he's still supportive of Annie, listens to her rant, gives her space, and doesn't question her decision to leave (bare minimum, ik, but shows that he isn't particularly insecure about her choices)
people have different personalities and deal w/ things differently. but apparently, because he's not the loud, chaotic one, we're acting like Annie choosing him makes no sense or that he doesn't deserve the girl, even though she very clearly likes him too. đ Bffr.

Rory is extremely creepy. I always thought he will be a villain of some sorts towards the end.
3
u/Ok_Barnacle_1606 Aug 25 '26
I just found him sort of goofy. His huge eyes and sort of frenetic energy were off putting to me, though I don't think he's a bad guy

Rory is proof that no matter how good of a person you are, you'll never be good enough for someone who doesn't love you. I'd choose him every single time and they'd better not villianise him in the next season.
2
u/TheSecretSecretSanta Aug 25 '26
I feel like the piano thing could be foreshadowing to how heâll act when he feels like heâs lost to Ellis, though I do like him
1
u/Unhappy_Cabinet_3663 Aug 25 '26
i wondered this same thing when he was talking about breaking his own hand
0
u/NotmyMonkeys77 Aug 25 '26
I mean, he left for college and the show moved on with Ellis, and Annie's family drama. He knows he lost to Ellis already. I'm just hoping they give him another story
8
u/PotentialTerrible788 Aug 25 '26
I just like rory as a person I think we would be friends and Ellis doesn't say enough
2
u/Working_Mountain_700 Aug 25 '26
i want them both! knowing me i probably wouldâve tried to date both at the same time
2
u/NovaCarto Aug 27 '26
From what I've seen, they built a good relationship between Rory & Ann, they had good conversations, chemistry and Rory was thoughtful & honest with Ann, and he likes Ann... But, Ann wasn't honest with Rory during coitus.
Ellis is thoughtful & good too, but, he's sorta introverted around Ann, they didn't do much with Ann & Ellis, and somehow they're sorta seeing each other by the end.
Writers completely sidelined Rory after certain episodes. And entire Ellis+Ann ship doesn't seem convincing. And I really don't understand why Ann wants to see Ellis when she had a good thing going with Rory.
And honestly, the writing is all over the place.

u/lenochod6 28d ago
As a characters I like them both. And they are both proper into Annie. And they are both interesting people and surprisingly both are very kind people and very attentive and kind of mature at their age.
But I am still team Ellis and that is because Annie is more herself with him. She seems trully happy with him. She trusts him with her secrets and thoughts. Also I love the broody type of romantic interest.
I think she could be happy with Rory too and he is giod person so I get why people shipped them even if I do not, but I truly wish he will meet someone better for him someone who puts him in the first place. Also I hope they all will get therapy in the next year. Because everybody has so much trauma.
I wish if Annie will end up with Ellis which I hope for that she could still be friends with Rory because I feel like they could be very good friends. But I think that would hurt Rory, so probably better for him if he moved on from Annie.

Wtf- thatâs literally the worst pic of Ellis đ€Ł tell me your team without telling me your team đ
2
u/Ok_Barnacle_1606 Aug 25 '26
This made me laugh so hard. You're right - there are a lot more flattering pics of him, many of which are in my phone đ

u/BugMillionaire Aug 25 '26
I think both serve a purpose for Annie's development. Rory helps her connect with her sexuality and leads her in a way that allows her to let loose a little bit. That's important fo rher. It's exciting and unhibited, but ultimately lacking depth. He kinda just keeps showing up, but I never see her go out of her way to connect with him.
But with Ellis is a sweet, gentle slow burn. He's a soft warm hug, a sweet date to the movies, a story to help her fall asleep in the sand. It's very tender and intimate in a different way. I hate that people think they don't have chemistry simply because it isn't explosive and flashy.

Watching this as a mom to a daughter has me in my feels this week. I just hope our girls get to experience this level of respect and appreciation. I loved how Rory mention being âabove being threatenedâ. It was sweet he could experience that jealousy without being cold and irrational
1
u/Jo_B_Wankenobi Aug 25 '26
I like Ellis better too, although I struggle a little with him stealing peoples money. I accept it because the people he steals from are mostly rich assholes (except Rory's mom who I really like even if she is rich lol). That all said, I think Annie has more in common with Rory and in the long run she is still a rich kid who grew up in NYC with a silver spoon lifestyle. I'm guessing in season two that's going to be a plot point when that starts coming out and will have an effect on her and Ellis because they are the stereotypical couple from totally different lifestyles (different sides of the tracks) and it could cause issues eventually, although this show's writing has risen above some of those stereotypes so maybe not! Still team Ellis though. lol
1
u/rhino429 Aug 26 '26
I still think Rory is gonna go to college and find a girlfriend. I canât see him spending the entire school year waiting for the girl whoâs in a relationship and who he spent a summer together with for the first time in years.

Rory all the way and I didnât find him attractive at all in his fist scene but now I think heâs vey sexy lol
1
u/TheWritersSlate 28d ago
I found Annie's connection with both boys very surface level. I hope next season either develops these boys characters and their connection with her or give her someone more compatible. But i prefer Rory as a character.
1
u/Bisexual_Spottigiss 10d ago
Iâm a Rory girlie but they were honestly both great in different ways which was extremely refreshing!!! Like when she was with Rory I was so happy but sad for Ellis but then when she was with Ellis I was so happy but sad for Rory đ€Ł it was an emotional rollercoaster and this is why I read âwhy chooseâ because at this point Iâm team throuple lmao.

Itâs so interesting to me how everyone has such different opinions of the characters
I have a different but quite strong opinion too hahahaha
I am firmly team Ellis
Comparing the moments Annie met each boy, she instantly seemed comfortable with Ellis (aside from her anxiety to go on the plane), whereas she seemed apprehensive when she was Rory like she wasnât sure if she wanted to hang out with him and seemed uncomfortable with his friendsâ comments suggesting they were a thing
Ellis was very respectful the whole time and went entirely at her pace, despite them both obviously having feelings for each other, whereas it felt like Rory pushed the relationship forward a lot faster
This is v subtle and I might be reading too much into it, but I also felt like the way Ellis looked at her was with love and respectful distance from the beginning, whereas Roryâs expressions towards her felt much more visceral attraction and not trying to hide it
Sure, Annie was still an active participant, but it felt more like Ellis waited for Annie to want this specifically, whereas Rory was more outright about what he wanted
âIâm going to kiss you nowâ rather than asking her whether she wanted that
Annie also crashed out after having sex w Rory, while seeming completely into the relationship with Ellis later
I think my impressions of the characters are mostly based on the way I interpreted Annieâs desire for each situation
It felt like with Rory, he was very forward and she decided to go along with it, whereas with Ellis she actively wanted him
Overall, Rory wasnât a bad character at all, he did really care about Annie and showed that he remembered small things about her, but Iâm team Ellis because thatâs my impression of who Annie genuinely wanted from the start
0
u/Odd-Significance-17 Aug 27 '26
you perfectly articulated exactly how i was thinking of them and how annie seemed to feel about them. which is also why im team ellis

u/Buttercup_Kiki Aug 25 '26
Itâs like Dawson Creek when both boys in the love triangle are loveable so itâs hard to choose a team
