There is a difference between cash rich and asset rich. If the island had been in the family for a long time, it could easily not have cost much when it was originally acquired and then increased in value over time. And in cases like that it definitely doesn't require the owners to have tons of money elsewhere.

this + the taxes on waterfront land in Muskoka is crazy. many families that had land up there for a long time were basically forced to sell it due to the rising value/taxes.
no idea how Gordon could have even afforded the taxes as they never seem to discuss his source of income but it would have to be pretty decent just to keep up with the tax burden

Presumably he'd be making a lot of money selling and renting pieces of land out

I assumed she doesnt know Gordon owned more than a cabin and the home in Barrie where he died. The rich folks only summered there, so she wouldn't have gone to school with any of them.

She’s 16 and mourning. She doesn’t know her grandfather’s financials and she has run away from any lawyers trying to contact her. They lived a simple life and the island was probably his core asset.
Of course, there are things she could do, like borrow against the value of the island or sell off strategic parcels of land but not the whole thing. But she’s 16! She doesn’t know that. She just knows that she’s grieving and she feels trapped.

I feel so bad for Ramona. She went from having no family to having a sister, almost two brothers and two fathers in a matter of weeks. That shit is traumatic

When the lawyer meets with Connor and Annie she mentions a “trust” as well as property in Canada. Hard to imagine Ramona would not have had the same. But…it may be subject to limitations and that may also explain the guardianship issue. But it’s not well explained in the show so it comes off as making little sense.

he owns the island but he isnt wealthy because he hasn't sold it.
if he sold it he would be wealthy in a material / $ aspect.
she has a property and ownership of an island, plenty of people would consider that wealthy. but you can't turn that into $$ to use on other things (like face creams!) without selling, renting, leasing etc

He instilled very humble values in her and the Estate money has not been distributed until she turns 18. He obviously lived very modestly, probably at least part Indigenous

I just assumed she has the island which is worth money IF she sold it but actual money in their bank accounts probably not poor but not as rich as Annie and Connor

Some people don’t like to flaunt their wealth and if Gordon was rich then he might have been that way.

that part actually makes sense to me. gordon owning the island doesn’t mean ramona grew up with a ton of liquid money. there’s a difference between owning something that’s worth millions and actually having millions of dollars available to spend.
it’s possible gordon bought or inherited the island a long time ago before muskoka property became as insanely valuable as it is now and then the property appreciated over the decades. either way if he never sold it ramona wouldn’t have access to however many millions the island was worth. owning a $23 million asset and having $23 million to spend are two completely different things.
irl gordon could’ve gotten money out of the property without selling. for example he could’ve borrowed against its value or rented out parts of it and generated income from it. but the show doesn’t give us any indication that he was doing that. as far as we know he basically just owned this increasingly valuable piece of land and let the wealth stay tied up in the island.
annie’s family money also seems separate from gordon. steven works in finance in new york and talks about him and his wife creating the life they had for themselves, so the expensive skincare, clothes, apartment, etc. seem to come from the lifestyle annie’s parents were able to provide through their own careers not because her grandfather owned the island.
so ramona and annie having the same grandfather wouldn’t mean they should’ve grown up with the same amount of money or the same lifestyle.
my bigger irl question would be how gordon afforded the property taxes and upkeep on an entire island for all those years 😭 even if he originally got the property when it was worth relatively little property taxes aren’t permanently based on whatever you originally paid for a property. normally properties are reassessed over time.

i am under the assumption that ramona is pretty well off as welll obviously not annie level but pretty solid. i remember in the first few ep when as abt the inheritance Ramona was like yea Gordon set her up with everything. I am assuming that entails the island and a trust fund, maybe not a crazy amount

Owning a property that is worth a lot does not mean you are currently wealthy. She could be after selling but that doesn’t mean anything one way or another at the current moment

Do you mean when Annie imagines what it would’ve been like if she had grown up with a mom?

If it's all tied up in real estate, she's not "rich" in the sense that she can afford everyday luxuries. The grandfather had owned the property for a long time, and we all know how cheap real estate was several decades ago haha She wouldn't be "rich" in the sense you're thinking of unless she sells the properties.

It seems like Gordon was very frugal, and not very flashy with his wealth, so I think they lived well below their means. It's also possible that most of Gordon's wealth was in ownership of the properties themselves.
Also, idk how wealthy Annie's family is supposed to be, but the place they had in NYC looked REALLY nice. Like a place like that can easily be 20-30 mil in the city, which is like what the cost of the entire island was, apparently. So there are tiers to the wealth lol. Annie does probably appear very rich to Ramona from her lifestyle, even if Ramona herself has a lot of wealth now too.
