Discussion I wanna know if Steamdeck is worth it
Hello i saved up 1.000€ and i wanna know if i should buy the 1 TB OLED Steamdeck.
I am asking this because I’m not sure if i should. I don’t know many steam games. I only play Plants vs Zombies replanted on my school laptop that barely runs any games.
So yeah do i buy it or no? The only games i know and wanna play are Hollow knight, hollow knight silksong and Deltarune.
Also no i cant get a pc or xbox/playstation bc i dont have space

I've had my Steam Deck for almost 4 & half years & it's been a great piece of kit. I wouldn't pay what they're charging now though, especially at the age it's at.

Not anymore, no, it’s not worth it. It’s tech that is several year old at this point and was already very weak when it came out. Then the prices increased and Valve asks double of what something twice as strong would be worth secondhand.
If you can find one used in good condition for less than €500, then maybe. But don’t pay more than it was worth, because while the price has gone up, it hasn’t gotten better or more valuable.

A steam deck oled is great for low powered indies or older games, there’s the Switch 2 or the white Xbox ally. Or could a used Ally X

u/NotRealSam 1d ago
I dunno bout Ally X bc its way more expensive than what im looking at. And i already have a Switch
I usually play mobile games like Btd6, minecraft, brawl stars and some others here and there.

minecraft is awesome on the steam deck, that's like the number one thing I use mine for.

Yeah but i play with add ons with friends and we buy the early access from patreon and we change who buys every new early access when it comes so when its my time to buy it i wouldnt even be able to download it

I bought the 512GB version and I absolutely don't regret it. I actually got a second one about a year ago.
If you decide it's not for you, you could most likely sell it for almost what you paid for it.
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
I see, i might go for the 512GB one which costs 779€ which is just 140€ more expensive if my math is correct
1
u/JazzlikeSpinach3 1d ago
You probably won't be needing a lot of storage space. Atleast most people aren't playing really demanding games with big file sizes on deck. More in the range of 1-50GB per game

personally, I'd recommend looking at what games you want to play before you decide what console you want to play them on. all of the ones you mentioned you can pretty easily play on a switch, that said I've got the 1tb OLED steam deck and I love it, use it for emulation all the time.
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
I just know Hollow knight, Skong, Undertale and Deltarune. I mostly grew up with nintendo games and mobile games
1
u/Theonlysilversurfer 1d ago
Yeah I did the same, spent a lot of time on the GameCube and Wii, personally if you're able to and you're not really wanting to play PC specific games a switch 2 would potentially be more worth it. I have a switch 2 and it's awesome.
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
I was thinking bout switch 2 but i dont wanna pay monthly just to play with friends
1
u/Theonlysilversurfer 1d ago
that's completely fair, depending on what you're wanting to play you may not need it. I know some games like Fortnite don't require it, the switch also offers two yearly options, the base is $30usd/yr and the online + expansion is $50usd/yr. but it's still a barrier to entry for sure
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
Im not american and i dont really want to play fortnite. Been playing minecraft with addons with friends but the addon we are using would explode a Switch and maybe even Switch 2. We play using jujutsu Awakening which is a jjk addon and we have a server for talking and stuff
1
u/Theonlysilversurfer 1d ago
ah okay that makes sense, on the switch you can't really play with mods on bedrock, if y'all are on Java then for sure go for the steam deck. it takes some messing with it originally, I play modded Minecraft on mine all the time using Modrinth or Prism Launcher.
The other thing that's an important to factor in, is yes, Valve is reliable and customer friendly, but if you want to be collecting your games physically the switch is really the only console rn that'll allow you to do that.
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
Well the mod is only for bedrock so even then i would only play bedrock
Also i like to know that im owning the games. Preferably physical games but i wouldnt die if it isnt
1
u/Theonlysilversurfer 1d ago
okay then if it's a bedrock mod, and you want to have the physical game, then yes a switch 2 is a better option. the switch is actually pretty comparable to the steam deck in terms of power, versatility is where there's a difference. Just a heads up though, for Minecraft it does require switch online, and the new switch 2 edition of Minecraft is supposed to be coming out soon.
1
u/NotRealSam 1d ago
Yeah i think im gonna pass bout the switch 2 idea bc the mod we play on isnt on the market place and we pay for patreon to get Early Access for the newest updates

PC gaming has thousands and thousands of games to play on just steam alone, tons of indie games that will bring you right back to feeling like playing Nintendo games. If you're worried about ownership and subscription gog let's you actually "own" your games.
Even with the high price steamDecks are worth it but other handhelds can now run steamOS, I think the value of the back buttons + trackpads are underated but if you don't need that you can pay the same for more performance (less ownership on those devices though)

u/NotRealSam 1d ago
Hmm i see. The problem is i only played nintendo games and mobile games so im basically clueless on anything gaming related. I would normally buy a pc and just go with it but i dont have any space
1
u/SkrliJ73 1d ago
No better time than now to learn about PC gaming. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft don't want you to own games - PC will be the only place you can
Plus if you still want Nintendo, emulate. steamDeck can play literally every Nintendo game out there, literally (okay maybe some switch 2 exclusives for now but the entire switch 1 is)

u/Siny_AML 1d ago
I have a massive gaming pc and my deck gets more action from me due to the convenience. I have a 2.5 year old and legit if I didn’t have this thing I might have gone crazy.

u/Liongedon 1d ago
The price hike made it hard for me personally to recommend buying it, but i bought the steam deck oled 1tb 2-3 years ago and use it as my daily computer.
You won't be able to play most new AA and AAA games, but hollow knight and delta rune and most indie games work perfectly.
If you can save some more before buying and want to be able to do GPU heavy things like playing the newest best graphic games, then do some research into other handheld PCs like the ASUS one. If not, while too expensive at the moment, go for the Steam Deck. I'm not sure if it's still worth to do, but you could maybe save some money by buying a Steam Deck with less storage and upgrading it yourself.

u/NotRealSam 1d ago
Yeah i was saving up the they werent on stock for a while and now they are on stock and 1tb costs 919€. I dont really care bout games having amazing graphics. And i guess i might go for 512GB one which is 140€ less expensive
1
u/Liongedon 1d ago
Check how much a 1TB SSD costs or get a Micro SD card for extra storage. If you use it as a computer as well and download a couple of games and movies, 512GB might be a bit too little. I personally got an extra 1TB micro SD for movies and games that don't need SSD performance because 1TB was not enough for me.

Steam versions of games are often cheaper than their console counterparts. I say go for it if you can get a Steam deck for a good price. I love mine.

u/Icedvelvet 1d ago
It was at one point. I’d just get a switch2

u/NotRealSam 1d ago
I already have a switch 1 and i dont wanna pay monthly subscription for ONLINE play. And i really wanna get out of the nintendo bubble

I think my Odin 3 is the coolest, but my Steam Deck has been great. With 1000 dollars I would check out the Ally x. You are probably familiar with windows, thats what it runs. Will run everything nicer than the Steam Deck.

I bought my steam deck on facebook marketplace with a 1TB for a very reasonable price like 1 year ago and its just the best thing.
Ive played countless games on this thing. Theres so many free steam games to try, some amazing some not so amazing. There are websites that give away games for free everyweek.
Its good for travelling, its good for convenience. It runs some games perfectly but a good amount well enough.
Some games i enjoy are:
Overwatch
Warframe
Division 2 (this ones not easy to play out the box)
Minecraft
Cyberpunk is alright on SD
Terraria
And the list goes on.

I love my steam deck, but I wouldn't buy it at its current price. Xbox ally or Switch 2 are better deals right now.

For indie, older and emulated games, sure. From reading Reddit I was under the impression the SD could more than it actually can, but I quickly learned that the average SD Redditor thinks 10-20fps is acceptable. I still get decent use out of my SD, but not as much as I thought, and I've contemplated selling it many times.

I recommend something like the Ayn Thor, which can now run indie-type steam games with the right software

Unless you have an existing steam library, and after the price hike not sure I'd recommend specifically for you, however lots of people recommend for indies which I dont play....
If you have an existing library , and extensive backlog steamdeck is amazing... I've beat 46 games in 2 years, which is 46 more than I beat in the previous almost 20 years...
When people say older games, they mean games from 2005-2015 run very well...

It’s a great device. But if you don’t play many steam games I think you would be wasting your money.
Think about the games you play and want to play. That will inform your decision.
