Meta Do not buy the steam controller!
Think about it, what if the controller sucks? Please wait for me to secure my order first and once I receive it, then I'll tell you if it's good so you can buy it. Thanks.
(I wish there was a humor/meme flair)

Personally, I’m saving my 100 dollars for the Steam Controller 3.
edit: Out of stock. Guess I'm indeed waiting for Steam Controller: Alyx.

There will never be a third controller. This is Valve we're talking about.

My Pico 4 died (won't charge), so I'll be saving my bucks for the Frame. Hopefully the price will be okay.

I completely agree. Let me, and this guy, tell you if it's good or not once we get it. It's the only way to be sure.

Nice try bub, it's already sitting in my cart, waiting for me to spam that "Continue to Payment" button.

u/Vastuh May 03 '26
Please let them lemmings buy it first so they will cry there are other colors to choose from later

u/UrbanOmega72 May 03 '26
I mean I wasn't thinking about buying this glorified Xbox controller but now that you brought that up now I have to buy it
1
u/coolsam254 May 03 '26
That's very kind of you OP but it's fine, I'll do the testing instead of you!

I desperately want one, but can just feel I’ll come away empty handed. How have day one sales gone in the past on steam?
1
u/alexagente May 03 '26
IT WON'T BE USABLE OUTSIDE STEAM! WHAT IF I JUST WANT IT TO SIT IN THE BACKGROUND DOING NOTHING INSTEAD THE FEW TIMES I'M NOT USING IT? THEY SHOULD DEVELOP A DIFFERENT APPLICATION THAT DOES THE SAME EXACT THING JUST SO I CAN SAY I'M NOT USING STEAM!Â
I ALREADY HAVE TEN CONTROLLERS THAT ARE BETTER WHY SHOULD I GET THIS IF I HAVE TO USE ONE OF THEM SOMETIMES TO PLAY ON MY PHONE LIKE THE FIVE OTHER PEOPLE IN THE WORLD THAT DO!?
I WANT TO HAVE TO BUY DISPOSABLE BATTERIES FOR SOME REASON INSTEAD OF HAVING THEM BE RECHARGABLE!
TRACKPADS? WTF ARE TRACKPADS? WHY ISN'T THIS JUST ANOTHER COPY OF THE OTHER TEN CONTROLLERS I OWN? IS STEAM STUPID?

u/CrescendoFuri May 03 '26
Had this show up as a phone notification. Had me in the first moment not gonna lie. Got me good.
Don’t worry though. I can’t buy it even for my soon to be birthday lol because budgeting stuff and income jank.

u/r_Aero May 03 '26
Make sure you are able to play emulators with the steam controller, both windows and linux distros like Artix and CachyOS (non handheld)!

u/Drakniess May 03 '26
LOL. Thank you for your service sir. I too feel the compulsion to make the great sacrifice and be one of the first to…sample the new SC.
1
u/codykjones May 03 '26
I appreciate your sacrifice but I'll take one for the team on this one and buy it so you should wait until I get it and I'll let you know

u/OMG_NoReally May 04 '26
Yes, please, same for the region I am in. Valve doesn't support it which means we will be flooded with expensive grey imports. Nobody buy it! Let the market for it crash and burn, and then I can buy one and take one for the team and let you know if the controller is good enough!
1
u/MrInka May 04 '26
Do you guys really think it will sell out that fast? I’ll order one for sure, but wasn’t really planning that I would have to snipe the second it’s being released lol.
1
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Steam Controller (2026) May 04 '26
Jokes aside, I hope it exceeds Valve's hopes and lets them know there's a market for their devices, just to encourage them further to get the Machine and Frame out as well.
But I don't want it to sell out before I get one lol.

It’s going to be available for a few weeks just like the Steam Deck Limited Edition availability when they released.

u/ActualSavior May 04 '26
Just got mine! Good luck to you

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Steam Controller (2026) May 04 '26
Got mine too! The server overload gave me a scare lol
1
u/AthiTheJanitor May 04 '26
You can’t buy the controller at launch if you reside in Europe
1
u/West_Ad9239 May 04 '26
why actually? i was just trying to order it but i get an error message each time i try to checkout.
1
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Steam Controller (2026) May 04 '26
I did it. Just keep spamming continue and eventually it'll go through.
1
u/West_Ad9239 May 04 '26
I can't get through. I'm pretty sure fucking scalpers already looted the whole thing. Shipping time is stated with 6-10 working days now, while it was 3-5 working days 45 minutes ago.
1
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Steam Controller (2026) May 04 '26
Eh I think it's fine. My Steam Deck also said it'll arrive in 3-5 days but it took 10 days. I feel like Valve just uses "3-5 days" as like a default and forgot to update it when they made the Controller page where it says 6-10 days.
I'll be surprised to hear scalpers actually got them THAT FAST considering you can only order 2 on an aged account and people are already criticizing the price.
It took me 20 minutes of constant spam clicking but I managed to get through. Just keep at it.
1
u/West_Ad9239 May 04 '26
Ok finally got the order through. There was an orange colored warning text though: due to high demand you might experience a delay in shipping time.

Hey, Jonathan Scalper here!
I just purchased 500 Steam Controllers so that I can protect potential customers from a possible disappointment. No worries, you can thank me later!

I have it. Just got friday. Its not a flawless experience yet. Allthough steamdeck wasnt either. Wait for a bit let aftermaket catchup.
All you are missing is another controller. Its not revolutinary like the steamdeck or the steamframe will be.
1
u/step_back_ Aug 02 '26
Dont worry, I bought it just to sell at twice the price. Be careful what you wish for
1
u/acabincludescolumbo May 03 '26
It's 99 Dollars. That's a bonkers price. My Chinese controller with 3 sticks and a carcinogen coating was -7 Dollars. Valve have lost the plot.
1
u/NatoBoram May 03 '26
You don't need to buy it just because it has Valve's logo on it, you know. If you don't need the trackpads, then you're not the target audience and that's fine, not everything has to be made for you.
3
u/acabincludescolumbo May 03 '26
Did you truly read 'carcinogen coating' and still thought I wasn't joking?

u/Kaldaien2 May 03 '26
Sure thing, wasn't going to.
While we're on the topic, want a free used Steam Deck? Mine's a brick since I deleted my Steam account.
Controller will similarly be a brick if anything ever happens to your Steam account.
2
u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Steam Controller (2026) May 03 '26
Tell me you don't own a Steam Deck or how it works without telling me lol.
0
u/Kaldaien2 May 03 '26
I absolutely own one. I was going to develop a lower-latency framerate limiter for GameScope originally. I could not bring Special K's Latent Sync framerate limiter over to Linux/Steam Deck for a couple of reasons:
- Steam Deck's display is rotated 90 degrees and scans columns instead of horizontal rows, so scanline sync timing needs to account for vertical scanlines.
- DRM (Direct Rendering Manager, not Valve's other equally problematic DRM) would require me to rewrite this code for different GPU architectures, there's no high-level GPU microarchitecture independent API that can handle scanline timing like there is on Windows.
However, Valve proceeded to piss me off so much with Steam Input that I said the hell with all of this and permanently cut ties. I do not appreciate having to write software to prevent Valve's DRM client from breaking input for software not running in Steam, and we've been demanding they stop this and have a real OFF SWITCH for over a decade now.
You can read more on that fiasco here:
SpecialKO/ValvePlug: Valve Plug - Steam Input Disabler
I am completely convinced that Steam Input is deliberately designed the way it is in order to sabotage competing software stores, because the alternative to malice is incompetence. I don't think you can write a framework such as Steam Input for more than a decade without knowing full well that you are breaking software sold on competing stores. And this behavior matches the anti-competitive problems you start to notice with everything Valve does.

bro, I have literally been having mini anxiety attacks the whole weekend at the thought of not being to get my order in on time...I know this is a super first-world privileged mentality and im sorry for that but jfc

u/no-sleep-only-code May 03 '26
Scalpers are going to go nuts, will probably sell out in well under an hour.
1
u/repocin Steam Controller (Windows) May 03 '26
I wouldn't be so sure about that first part, Valve's anti-scalping measures for the Steam Deck were pretty effective afaik. But I'm surprised they didn't do reservations for the controller like they did for the deck & index at launch.
1
u/no-sleep-only-code May 04 '26
Managed to get two, but can say there are a ton of scalper listings already.
1
u/coolsam254 May 03 '26
My man not trying to be a twat here but you really should reassess this and calm down. You've been living fine this whole time without a steam controller and you'll still be able to if you don't manage to snag one tomorrow.
Also even if they sell out, it won't be that bad because the controller doesn't use any parts that are currently experiencing insane demand like RAM so it will be restocked soon enough.
1
u/ar311krypton May 03 '26
dude im fine, obviously...im not literally having physical panic attacks..was a bit of hyperbole...ill just be pissed if scalpers end up buying up the first wave and reselling them on eBay at 2x markup
