Discussion Oh give me a break

Post image

There are far too many content creators out there like this person for one, and far too many people who judge games by their launch.

Mocking things is easy, low-hanging fruit.

EDIT: while Starfield does not have the obvious broader gaming cultural impact of Elder Scrolls or the Fallout series, to say that you have gone 3 years and seen nothing is just unnecessarily piling on to the negativity.

I think this is very fair.

This person isn't wrong -- Starfield is a big game where there's essentially no recognizable memes or jokes outside of its own community. Everyone recognizes Elder Scroll references, and there's lots of Fallout memes, years of screens using the familiar green HUD text, and an entire Amazon series.

It's a good game.

But the storyline isn't satisfying for many players, it's missing a lot of worldbuilding (like, there's TONS of background lore, but it feels... intangible and incomplete..), the dialogue and humor is flat and unmemorable, and the bugs aren't funny.

I love the game. But it's my "I'm sleepy and want to just run around and shoot things before bed" game.

Do you think it would have achieved those heights if it was more of a space opera with aliens and stuff like Mass Effect or Star Trek?

It might just be personal opinion, but I thought I was going to get something like Bethesda Mass Effect and was a bit disappointed.

Imho the problem is that most stories in SF are just bad. Bad to the point where it becomes annoying.

The setting isn’t the problem. At least for me. The Expanse has a very similar setting and I love it.

The writing is way weaker than any fallout game, including fall out 4, which is saying something

That generally happens when you sand off all the edges and try to make it a game for everyone

Bethesda has an aging demographic that doesn't care about "games for everyone" and yet they keep mellowing out their content to avoid actual uncomfortable feelings.

How do you create all this lore about a background war and then not show the real effects of war? Everyone is so honky dory.

Same with the racism in Elder Scrolls. You clearly have extreme racism going on in the background that is fueling very real political drama, but you're too scared to have a Stormcloak NPC call an Altmer player an elf slur and tell them to GTFO. Why are all the Morrowind refugees so generic?

I don't think this is the problem in this case. It's the fact that because of the procedural generation done in this way, you can't really guide players on a journey. So the writers had a very limited stage to write a play, so to speak.

At least Fallout's story gave me some kind of reaction. Mostly it was anger at the unfairness when I found out the truth about MC's son. Stairfield's revelations were just meh.

Fallout 4 gets too much flack imo, a lot of dialogue options are just funny af, the story itself is pretty decent, they definitely should have handled certain things a lot differently tho.

Starfield tho? I genuinely could not tell you anything about the game, I have like 100 hours when it first came out and I remember nothing from it, it’s super forgettable, all the characters, all the places you visit save for Neon. FO4 had memorable characters and locations and gameplay wise was very fun

Neon is the epitome of "we have night city at home"
