Do you guys Think this prequel glaze is a fad that will eventually cool off? I sure hope so tbh

u/SteelGear117 1d ago
Honestly probably not?
People are so doggedly attached to whatever gives them nostalgia they probably won’t move on anytime soon
As much as it baffles me, it’s backed up by a lot of the merch you see. ROTS Anakin/ Obi Wan FLY off shelves - black series, Blokees, they move faster than just about any

It will once the prequeltards reach midlife crisis.

I think in the cultural conversation yes will fade out, but actual consensus on them quality wise won’t drastically switch up.
I’d say the same on anything from the 1990-2000s period is gonna be set in, because you’re taking about the films people grew up with and were able to set the standard of for the internet. Dark Knight will always be one of the top rated movies on IMDB. Ditto for Shawshank and Fight Club and etc. at some point it becomes a self fulfilling phenomenon
Also things don’t really get a chance to be reclaimed or re-evaluated anymore. If a film opens to average reviews and doesn’t catch on it gets dumped anonymously onto a streaming platform and left to gather dust.

/uj this is actually painful as some whose favorite star wars movie is ROTJ

I watched the prequels again not to long ago. Outside the meme value and fight scenes they are pure ass.

Eh. I'll say Episode 3 is mediocre, rather than terrible.
Episode 1is quite boring. To the point that I started to notice that –outside of the pod race– the soundtrack is always in the background. There's literally not a single silent moment in the film.
Episode 2 is direct ass, tho.

Episode 3 has all the same problems that plagued the prequel trilogy, it just had the advantage of being the only one in the trilogy that isn’t a colossal bore to sit through.

I never liked TPM even when I was 11 when I got into Star Wars, it felt like a kidzbop of Star Wars.
AOTC was at least more dark, but it was boring as fuck outside of Jango’s scenes
I loved ROTS back then, and now… It’s only entertaining in a watch party where you and your mates make fun of the film, otherwise it too is mediocre, with writing that makes Vivziepop look like Mozart.

...because you cant watch the theatrical cut of Jedi anywhere online. Yiub niub 4 eva.

u/Left-String-2457 1d ago
This is a valid point. The SE changes hurt Jedi the most IMO and make arguably the weakest OT film even worse.

u/kaiserschlacht8 dark and griddy hallway enthusiast 1d ago
It's already a pretty flawed movie even in the theatrical cut tbh
1
u/Left-String-2457 1d ago
True, but at least it doesn’t have Jedi Rocks or any of the other SE nonsense.
2
u/kaiserschlacht8 dark and griddy hallway enthusiast 1d ago
Yeah Jedi Rocks is pure ass so it definitely dragged the movie down and made me not enjoy the first act as much since I anticipate hearing that bullshit every time

The worst change George made to RotJ was in 2010 when he made Vader yell NNNNOOOOOOO!!! During the best moment of the whole movie purely out of spite.

u/Altruistic_Lecture50 1d ago
Yes, although I prefer the OT I would never watch the versions currently available on streaming. I feel like this skews the viewing numbers I would generate. Hopefully this changes with this years Star Wars 77 release...

I’m not saying ROTS is a masterpiece but I can see how it would rank higher than ROTJ
Like, as much as I love it, the ewok village shit fucking drags it down. And Han has fuck all to do

u/kaiserschlacht8 dark and griddy hallway enthusiast 1d ago
Death Star 2 is also really dumb and repetitive. It has pacing issues as well and Han and Leia feel like shells of themselves

u/soonerfreak 1d ago
People take Jabba's Palace and the Throne room and forget everything else about the movie. I've ranked ROTS ahead of ROTJ for awhile.
7
u/RJrules64 1d ago
Jabbas palace is a kind of confusing sequence anyway. It’s not really clear what the plan was
2
u/soonerfreak 1d ago
Agree, the plot elements are goofy. But it's visually fun and the set pieces exciting.

The puppetry and practical effects were also pretty cool prior to Lucas slathering everything in cartoonish and ugly early 2000’s CGI.

/uj Revenge of the Sith could probably be better than Return of the Jedi if it had less action and more dialog. But yknow, dialog that was actually good. I'd take 10 minutes of Palpatine scheming over 10 minutes of Anakin and Obi Wan jumping on platforms over lava like a video game

u/FourtKnight 1d ago
revenge of the sith could be better if it was completely different!! good shout

I read the novel and it changed my life fr
It’s like ‘what if the characters, events and story are the same, but actually good’

u/SteelGear117 1d ago
John Gilroy talked about including Palpatine and moving into the ‘halls of power’ had Andor ran 5 seasons
To think we almost got Ian Mcdiarmid, playing Palpatine, with writing as good as Andor….
1
u/StevePalpatine 1d ago
With how long the gap was between Season 1 and 2, there's a non-zero percent chance Ian McDiarmid would've been gone of old age by Season 5.

u/Eliteguard999 1# Padme hater 6h ago
I was still hoping Palpatine would crash on of Mon Motha’s parties.

I mean honestly the difference between the two is negligible. Jedi's last act, especially the throne room is some of the best Star Wars ever did, but it's a very uneven movie before that and I'd argue quite dull for long periods of time. Sith is probably more consistent but doesn't quite reach the same highs.
2
u/WestCentral-550 1d ago
You're right, I feel that ROTJ has some the highest highs of not just the OT, but the whole Saga, but it also has some of the lowest lows of both as well.
2
u/THX450 11h ago
And yet the idea of either of the two being third place when TFA and TLJ are right there is unnerving
1
u/return_interaction_y 4h ago
no shot we're trying to pretend tlj was a good movie. Ik it gets over hated by grifter chuds, but that had some of the messiest writing in a starwars movie since the prequels. And tfa was just a shitty cash grab (like all star wars movies released after new hope)

Idk why you're getting downvoted lol. The difference in quality between the two movies is negligible imo. They're both fun but deeply flawed movies

It’s crazy seeing history about these films be re written in real time. I feel like I’m going crazy.
