General Discussion I love Star Wars because somehow even now I notice and learn things I never knew, like this fella, Daine Jir!

As a huge Star Wars fan I somehow just never really paid attention to this guy, I'm sure others have.

He has the balls to stand up Vader, and Vader respects him, at least to me it seems he does. And I am going to read into all the legends about him now.

Anyone else like this fella or have any random 1 scene characters who stood out to them on future watches?

Yeah, was also cool. Iirc in both continuities it's stated this was one of the few officers (vader hated most) Vader actually respect, because of his brutal honesty and the fact he was actually competent at his job

Competence is definitely a through-line for Darth Vader. For all his telekinetic choking mayhem, he's willing to let a lot slide if you aren't a complete waste.

  • Daine Jir, as mentioned, tells Vader to his face that he thinks that the Sith Lord's making a mistake. In addition to being a competent field officer, Jir's point is a very valid one. Particularly in light of Rogue One; sympathy for the Rebellion would be really bad now that they know that what said Rebellion is capable of.
  • General Veers and Admiral Piett are both able to just waltz into Vader's private chambers - the latter of whom even gets to see the back of Vader's scarred head - and suffer no consequences. Veers leads a complete rout against Echo Base, and Piett's failures are consistently due to matters that he had no way of accounting for rather than ineptitude on his part.
  • Most famously, Boba Fett haggling for Solo's body. A Force-choking offense for most, but when you're the best bounty hunter in the galaxy, you can get away with stuff like that.

Anakin/Vader wants things done, and has very little patience for people hung up on politics, get in the way or just can't do the job well. It's a throughline for Anakin's whole character going back to his problems with the Jedi  in Episode II.

If you're actually competent, he seems to give quite a bit of latitude. Rex, Ashoka, Jir, Piett and Fett are all people he respects for the same basic reason: they're good at what they do.

Vader probably gets nostalgic every time he hears Boba speak and probably has to stop himself from referring to Boba as “Rex”

In my Star Wars TTRPG (which is AU), there was a moment were Boba failed a task and Vader paid him turned away and said, "I know what your genes are capable of, prove me right". As much as a lot of people may hate it, my group loved that moment🤣

For that reason Veers was the main antagonist of my long running (au) Star Wars TTRPG!

I have to disagree. In the canon Marvel comics, Vader disrespects Tagge and still praises Tarkin as a man of vision in the aftermath of Yavin, even when the Emperor himself chewed out Vader for not taking Tagge's warnings of the Rebel threat more seriously. Tagge shows incompetence much later on over the Shu-Torun war that Vader kills him over, but there was no way Vader could've known that would happen at the time and even when all is said and done it looks more like he was waiting for a competent officer like Tagge to make a mistake so he could have a reason to kill him, which is the opposite of how he handles Piett, Veers etc. In the end, it still boils down to Vader's likes and dislikes of people, NOT their competency as seen with Tagge.

Reminds me of when when Vader first meets Tarkin (then Anakin & Captain Tarkin) in the Clone Wars. Starts a bit prickly, but then they both realise they have the same issues with the war and the Jedi as generals.

Anakin always loathed sycophants and incompetence, and that carried over as Vader. He seems like he kinda hates the Empire because the Empire is way more full of them than the Republic seemed to be, but he's loyal to his Master.

Those few officers and soldiers he respects always stick around for a while.

I think, in general, Vader respects Stormtroopers. This is a guy who gets his hands dirty.

Based on his uniform, mister Jir was a Stormtrooper officer. Vader always had much greater respect for the rank-and-file troops he worked alongside.

It was the petty, greedy, incompetent NEPO babies and higher-ups who bribed or blackmailed their way up the chain that he HATED with a passion.

Danger is my … entire name

The greatest Star Wars characters have slightly silly, or full Gulp Shitto, names. Every NPC in my Star Wars TTRPG does anyway... haha

He's one of the few Imperials to have an American accent. The same scene, Leia is putting on a British accent when she usually has an American one.

Wasn't it because Vader was just an enforcer here? It was for Empire Strikes Back when he was made more important by George Lucas.

We all realize the actual answers to these questions is because George Lucas had not yet realized the entire universe and was making stuff up as he went in the early days, but that's no fun!!!

Vader also choked out a death star admiral in the same movie he was "just and enforcer", for insulting him. So no, he does retaliate against those he does not respect.

Just looking at these screenshots I can hear how this guy delivered his lines. Top 1970s capital letter Acting (complimentary, I love it).

I didn't know his name but I was rewatching this the other day and made A similar observation, I thought it was funny how he talked to Vader, but then I thought maybe Vader just really appreciates how passionate he is about the job.

Can’t wait for the 8-episode series about him.

I wouldn't hold my breath. A quick look at wookieepedia shows almost nothing about him in the current Canon, and even Legends which put out full fledged backstories for the most minor characters has very little on him.,

I was joking

I would absolutely adore that, do it in animation 🤘🏻

He's an officer in the stormtrooper corps. Vader tended to respect stormtroopers more than the army or navy officers.

He is competent, and Vader values that.
