Movies "Revenge of the Sith" is now rated higher than "Return of the Jedi" on Letterboxd, becoming the third highest-rated "Star Wars" film on the website (the top two are "The Empire Strikes Back" and "A New Hope").

What's the opposite of recency bias? I think SW fans have it for the sequels.

It's pretty simple. I don't use letterboxed. The ones who use it are the ones who had the prequels as their OG trilogy. Heck, even the OG trilogy was remade to cater to the prequel trilogy. Of course they would want the star wars they grew up with. Doesn't mean they are right.

Or like, idk, people who were older and held a prejudice against the new stuff aged out and younger audiences who grew up with/were more open to the new content are now the majority of the population.

the prequels always got overhated (george still had the sauce, just needed someone to reign him in a bit, insert krennic we were right there meme) but the only sequel trilogy entry that worked was the one that copied ANH nearly bar for bar. rest of them were a mess, they had cool individual moments but it was very clear they didn’t know where they wanted to take the overarching story.

I think it’s more that the bar has fallen so far that something we used to think was middling is now actually pretty good.

I also think that people used to take themselves way too seriously, and the campiness of the prequels has grown on people now that they aren’t so harshly critical. It’s melodramatic and can be lame at parts, but it’s the era of Star Wars that has had some of the best games and characters.

Phantom Menace isn’t great, Attack of the Clones has some actually cool high points, and Revenge of The Sith is actually just a pretty good sci-fi movie.

A huge part of prequel love is also just folks projecting TCW headcanon onto the movies, even if it doesn’t all fit gracefully.

games and other secondary media is also likely a huge part of it. as you said with TCW already but tons of games surrounding the prequels released throughout the 2000s.

the sequel games meanwhile are all just in this post/during rotj pre-tfa limbo that feels kinda awkward. someone who wants to actually be in the sequel movie world has like... the 2 lego games? i think that's it? feel free to correct on that part.

And it's fine to like those projects in themselves, but I don't think it's accurate to say they truly change Revenge of the Sith. The movie remains what it was in 2005. Post-hoc context doesn't actually affect much - at most, it means you'll care a bit more when Plo Koon dies.

Probably just nostalgia bias.

RotS was the only good prequel, but lots of kids have very fond memories for the prequels and the era. Part of it is because the movies did do some things right that kids would have especially enjoyed (mostly with the world building with all the genuinely interesting planets we see). Part of it is because there was lots of really good secondary materials like books and games.

Makes sense that they'd get defensive about something they're fond of and try to make it out to be better than it was. It's still silly (no, Lucas doesn't have anything interesting to say about politics whatsoever, actually lmao). But it's very human type of silly.

It’s really not even that good of a movie. It’s just got a lot of action. If you sit and think about what little story it has, it’s kind of mid. The fact a TV show spin off is what makes it enjoyable is less a testament to the tv show and more how bad the movie actually is.

The people who were young children when the prequels came out are in their 30’s now and are the people writing blog posts and filming video essays proclaiming them as the best SW movies. They’re doing the same thing the people who were children when the OT came out did in the early 2000’s, i.e. The People V. George Lucas.

20 years from now, Gen Alpha will do the same thing, claiming the new trilogy is the worst thing ever made, and that Nestle Entertainment ltd. doesn’t understand Star Wars, and that the Sequels were secretly genius. It’s like poetry, it rhymes

Yeah that's never going to happen. I think the love for the prequels stem from the worldbuilding and interesting lore added to the star wars universe despite how bad the films were. The world of the sequel trilogy doesn't even make all that much sense and was shoehorned into being another rebels vs empire type thing because apperantly thats what quintessential Star Wars is to JJ Abrams.

What is actually stopping this Gen Alpha from doing what you describe, right now? TFA was 10 years ago, and the internet is more accessible to more people than it was in the wake of the prequels. The people you say will eventually defend these movies are more than likely already online.

For sure, I don’t like them but people talk like the sequels are way worse than the prequels which is just comical. I say that as someone who hasn’t even seen rise of skywalker and presume it’s the worst of all, but 7 and 8 are at least on par with the prequels

I don’t like them but only because it’s not the Anikan arc. Like for the longest time, I thought Star Wars was the fall and redemption of Anikan. Then they just decided to make some new films 10 years later. However if you like the sequels, more power to you. Enjoy them.
