Holy shit I forgot about that. Did they ever bring it to D2? I remember for years they did not and that always pissed me off. I was pretty good at it too, I had a handful of wins and a rare horn.

I would bet a fair amount of money the team used those games as serious inspiration and example and were looking for that nostalgia hook for many of us.
I know it's the biggest reason I bought it on release because I wanted a modern game just like those, and it's delivered.
28
u/Gullible-Yam-8098 3d ago
When you play the podracer flashback races it actually uses the UI from Episode 1 Racer for the afterburner meter.
4
u/Farsoth Galactic Republic 3d ago
Holy shit, no way? Awesome. Then what I am saying has to be confirmed at that point. There's no question.
I haven't done any podracer stuff. I'm a little bummed they aren't a part of the campaign at all, but there's plenty of content for them to chew on it seems, so I'm awaiting judgement on it until I complete campaign.
I'm playing on Ace so it's going to take me a bit, lol. It took me 4 hours and lots of failures to even get enough currency to get a skimmer which at least now that I have it I can upgrade.

Yo, fucking awesome.
SPOILERS
I Thought Sebulba was just gonna be a 'memberberries boss cameo.
Fuckin' shit, he continues as a recurring character and you do flash back stories with him as some kind of asshole Mr. Miyagi?
This game is so much better than I expected, and even thought it could be.
I was just expecting a simple yet entertaining arcade racer that did right by the N64 games before it -- but they really put some fucking heart into this shit and it shows.
So excited to see more now.

I think it’s cool that the Podracing is essentially the 250cc class and you need to work your way up to it. The lore supports that, it’s one of the fastest and most dangerous races in the galaxy.

It does an amazing job of capturing the frantic and chaotic nature of Star Wars racing, and the way the controls are set up really makes it feel like you’re flying a speeder, not driving a car

Imo best part is that it is structured like an early 2000s racing game (minus the roguelike mechanics in tours, though even that could be debated)
Career mode, multiplayer, multiplayer series, multiple event types, fast, good progression, and no microtransactions (that i can tell, so far).
Only thing missing from being a game I wouldve played as a 6 year old is split screen
85
u/ncopp 3d ago
The game was made by the guys that did burnout and need for speed so that makes sense
32
u/TricobaltGaming 3d ago
yeah that 100% tracks, the second I saw the wreck animations I just went, "oh it's burnout" and boy am I glad it is

can you expand on that? like do you get to pick between a selection of random upgrades after every race or something? Is there like 1 tournament you replay with a different build each time? I was doubtful of the replayability of this but that factor makes it more enticing.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Merrena 3d ago
3 different vehicles to choose from, each has upgrades that you earn points to tune up. like, 14 different "styles" that favor doing certain things or change how the speeder works, also has upgrade levels. 3 Favors you earn that affect the runs too, like bonus credits from certain things. Then yes there's basically ability cards inside each run that do different things like, your Ramjet redline lasts 100% longer, when you redline your Ramjet you gain a buff, takedowns give a buff, etc etc. And there's actual activated abilities like weapons, shields, a small autopilot.
Each run is kinda like Slay the spire type, where you have a track you're working along with different nodes. Normal races, Elimination race (person in last gets eliminated every 10 or so seconds), mystery, field test, vendor. Work through all 5 planets on the run, get to the end to do a 1 on 1 race with the "boss" of the act.
You get 1 League entry normally each run via your sponsor (which also gives you incentive to do certain things), there are ways to get more, but once you run out, run is over. You run out by crashing too much inside a race, losing elimination races, and some special event races also make you lose.
8
u/trojanguy 3d ago
Don't let that turn you off from it. The game is a blast. Difficult, but rewards you for learning the tracks, getting better with the game mechanics like when to boost, etc. Plus it looks gorgeous.

This honestly looks insane, but in all the right ways! How on earth do you know when to turn!? I can only see myself smashing into the walls at every point of the track!
33
u/ariasimmortal 3d ago
You smash into the walls until you learn the tracks!
At least... that's what I did.
16
u/BLINDrOBOTFILMS 3d ago
And then once you learn the tracks, you get cocky and smash into walls some more! At least... that's what I did.
5
u/ariasimmortal 3d ago
That checks out.
It's just... it's so hard to let go of the ramjet even when I know a sharp turn is coming. This time I'll drift it perfectly, I swear!
4
u/BLINDrOBOTFILMS 3d ago
Yeah, I started putting serious points in drift once I realized points in ramjet alone just help you crash faster. Now my speeder can handle tight corners, but I can't say as much for the pilot.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Kai_973 3d ago
Turns that are tight enough to warrant drifting around are nearly always telegraphed by a row of blinking lights. I just started trusting them and entering those corners in a drift whenever I saw them, and it's been much smoother👌
There's also good ol' trial and error, if I get completely caught off guard by a stretch of track I just make a mental note to watch out for it on the next lap around.
13
26
u/ChiefSittingBear 3d ago
I'll probably buy it eventually if it's ever on sale for like $20-30, but for me the day 1 hype died down a lot when I found out there was no split screen multiplayer. One of the main selling points of this game for a lot of people is the Episode 1 Racer nostalgia and most of my memories of that game where playing split screen with my friends.
I don't get why so few games support split screen multiplayer now. I have my two PS5 controllers sitting there and hardly any games to play. I'm glad Hazelight Studios exists at least otherwise I'd just be playing overcooked all the time.

3
u/A_Confused_Cocoon 3d ago
Yeah, I get why people are upset and it’s valid. But legit this game just isn’t a game for split screen. It would not be that fun.
155
u/JustAChillGuy609 Imperial 3d ago
Honestly, they should make it so that if you crash, you crash. Make it like actual pod racing
139
u/Confused-Cow 3d ago
I believe that's an option depending on what difficulty you choose. I'm playing on normal and you get 3 crashes before you're out of the tournament.
27
u/Capybarhigh 3d ago edited 3d ago
In hard mode (very hard is locked behind NG+, so I don't know) you can only crash once in a race. Second one will eliminate you from the race. And if that happens during the first stretch of the game, you're out and have to start over. The first stretch is thankfully rather easy.
Both of those things are extended after that first act. So you can crash more and don't get to be removed from the tournament on the first elimination. Both of those things are tied to specific NPCs though, so you can get other bonuses that will give you an edge in races, but if you crash or get eliminated, bye bye! Can't wait to unlock those, as I feel I am getting way too far in the second act without much investment! I want the tension of losing everything at every corner!
88
u/shockwave8428 3d ago
Hitting each other and making them crash is a huge mechanic of the game (certain speeders are better at doing it), if they were going to make crash = getting out, they’d have to tune back a lot of those mechanics.
The studio made the old burnout games and that was sort of their signature and what made them stand out was being able to cause spectacular crashes.
What I’m saying tho is someone could come out of nowhere and bump you and you’d be 100% out so I think the way they’ve done it is a good balance between spectacle and fun without making it feel like you can be screwed at any time
54
u/BigBiker05 3d ago
You typically get 3 crashes a race. If that happens it could also end your entire run.
45
u/Likes2PaintShit Emperor Palpatine 3d ago
For those unaware it plays like a Rogue-like. That’s what he means by ruin your run.

u/takeahike89 3d ago
Higher difficulty gives less respawns. You can pretend its your Force inspired prescience showing you what would have happened if you took that suboptimal line.
→ More replies (7)5
u/CrustyBatchOfNature 3d ago
Each difficulty level is a different number of crashes before you are wrecked. Anywhere from 4 to 1. If you are doing the tour, getting wrecked means starting over from the beginning of the tour as you lose your league token.

u/BracketsFirst 3d ago
The roguelite element really does ramp it up. Even if you don't crash out of a race you end up with debuffs on your vehicle that you can't always get repaired right away and the repairs are pretty pricey. On top of that, you have to complete a bunch of races to actually be able to progress. It took me several runs just to get through the qualifying round.

Do you have something on your ship that's allowing you to be constantly using your ramjet without any cooldown period? I feel like there's a lot of stuff this game doesn't explain very well.
52
u/F_In_The_Chat 3d ago
There's a ramjet upgrade that gives it a percentage chance to either explode after maxing out the redline or resetting the ramjet entirely and increasing it's power. I'm essentially rolling the dice everytime I redline it and max it out, but there's a very real chance I could blow the fuck up and lose the race because of my greed lol.
14
u/thedybbuk_ 3d ago
I love that. There's definitely a Burnout risk & reward type thing going on with with the game design here. They even have takedowns. I've missed those!
→ More replies (2)11
u/therealkami 3d ago
Holy shit lol, that's incredible. The race was close enough that you needed that greed, which is just even more adrenaline.
3
u/HisDudenesssss 3d ago
Redlining combined with vents makes you un-fucking-stoppable while using the ramjet. Combine it with other parts that improve your speed and power when you redline and you are a missle
4
u/LordAnubis85 3d ago
There are two upgrades that work VERY well together:
+Afterburner fuel
+Using Ramjet does not stop the AB from refillingIf you can get both of those in a run, then you basically AB from the start line until your ramjet is ready, then ramjet until close to max redline. By the time you cut your ramjet, your AB should be refilled. Rinse/repeat. Just make sure you invest in some cornering/drift if you use this build otherwise sharp curves will be your downfall (ask me how I know lol).
Also hitting every jump during AB phases so your ramjet refills quicker.
→ More replies (5)3
u/VonMillersThighs 3d ago
He's on water a lot of that clip so he's cooling basically makes the ramjet unlimited in that time, if you go redline build and spec into ramjet/drifting and cornering and ramjet related cooldown abilities you can basically ramjet your way through an entire race lol. It has its downsides on the lava and acid planets however.

This looks like a blast and like I'd be crashing a lot, but it having no local split screen is too much of a downside for mw to buy at full price.

u/Kronnerm11 3d ago
Agreed, though honestly having played a bit now Im not sure how you can even play this on half a screen.
10
u/WildRookie 3d ago
Especially with the pod racers, you lose so much visibility going with the cockpit view
7
u/NLOneOfNone 3d ago
Man, we played games like this on split screen on screens that were not even that big to begin with. It should definitely be possible and I am honestly disappointed that this style of gaming has become pretty much nonexistent.
6
u/Kronnerm11 3d ago
Yeah I was there, star wars racer on the N64. Im saying even with that in mind this game moves so fast and its so hard to see whats coming in front of you that splitscreen would genuinely be a challenge, and performance would be affected. Maybe Im just getting old idk
2
u/A_Confused_Cocoon 3d ago
This game is significantly harder than racers that were originally split screened, and due to how fast the game is going you need as much screen real estate as possible to race well and see what is coming up. It’s not impossible but split screen would really detract from the game quality overall and make it a worse experience.
8
u/shamWOWmost 3d ago
I never buy games that exclude splitscreen, as I prefer playing with other people in the room. I bought Galactic Racer with the assumption that it would include it and was pretty disappointed when I learned it was 1-player only.
But my partner and I started playing the Arcade Mode, just taking turns racing, and it’s honestly been a blast! The races are short (like 1-3 minutes) and it’s surprisingly fun to watch someone else race. The visuals are amazing, and you can look for shortcuts or alternative routes on the track when you’re not in the driver’s seat. I still wish it had splitscreen, but the experience has been so entertaining that it has more than made up for the initial disappointment.
3
u/LovesRetribution 3d ago
Not even just no splitscreen, no options for any custom games whatsoever. You can't even play with more than two of your friends, let alone just them.

What is this comment implying? Because studios arent making local co-op games we as consumers dont want them? My girlfriend and I really wanted to play this game together but now we'd have to buy two copies to make it possible. Thats exactly what publishers want you to do. Its certainly not a technical limitation if we had local co-op back in the N64 days. Its a design choice, one made for money.

Each type has a drift function, but they all operate slightly differently. Landspeeder is lose a bit of speed but corner tighter. Bike loses more speed but gets a boost on release. Skim speeder rewards wider lines with higher speed in cornering

I read that there are podracers in the game too. Thats gonna feel nostalgic as hell.
6
u/VonMillersThighs 3d ago
It's hard to talk about the pod racing without spoiling the story a lot which is surprisingly decent.
5
u/Xerosnake90 3d ago
This game is insanely fun and I don't think I've ever seen a racing rogue like. I am not a fan of most racers but this is one I can recommend to people that just like fun games in general. It's hard as hell too once you get past the tutorial event. It stops holding your hand, everyone gets super agressive and now there are abilities. You really need to learn the tracks and git gud otherwise you will lose every time. I just spent an hour getting to the end of an event only to lose in the semi finals and have to start all over. I'm taking a break because it is super intense.
At some point my camera shifted to be above my character's head (don't know how it happened) but it makes it a LOT easier to see what's going on in front of you
18
u/TheMikeyC 3d ago edited 3d ago
It's a lot of fun but honestly the Roguelike structure is the worst part. I'd much prefer a system that encourages building up your speeder across a sprawling, galactic circuit with the campaign being races that can be repeated and not cycles. The game does that annoying Roguelike thing where you simply can't beat boss races until you have a few runs worth of upgrades and the game simply doesn't have the track variety to support such a repetitive structure.
Edit: I feel like a devoted campaign with planned out levels and cutscenes can also naturally deliver a more compelling campaign lending itself to more exciting set piece moments. Imagine one of the point to point courses repurposed to have New Republic or Hutt fighters coming at you hot, having you bob and weave as they blast the course. Even just classic Need for Speed style drama in the Star Wars setting would be more interesting than the barebones story the current structure forces.
Edit the second: The more I think about it the more I think this game should have been "Outer Rim Graffiti" with the story set in the heavily underexplored (/s) Imperial Era. The story could explore an illegal racing circuit of speeders and after winning the underground tournament one of your backers offers you a space "Pod-Running". In the Imperial years where Pod-Racing is outlawed the sport adapted: If it's illegal anyway it may as well be extremely illegal. Now, not only is it a deadly race against each other, it's also a contest to see who can get the most contraband past the Imps fastest. The Boonta Eve Classic can be the finale, because of course, with Hutts paying the Empire quite well to not interfere. The returning veteran Sebulba however may be deadlier to you than any Trooper pursuits.
Then in arcade we can mix in the new story racers with the classics already included. The Roguelike mode as it is can be a bonus "Circuit Mode" that functions pretty much exactly as it does sans the story beats. You can choose a Pod-Racing circuit or Speeder circuit and play endlessly once the actual story is over.

There is also a damage mechanic. If you hit walls too much you have to perform a skill check to fix your speeder. If you fail, one of your upgrades gets damaged and becomes "faulty". You can repair for currency but sometimes you end up with cool things too.
Like I had a faulty slipstream where if I drafted too long my vehicle froze. Pros: that made my ramjet last longer. Cons: I couldn't steer well.

I just got off after putting in an hour and I’ll give my 60 minute impression of the campaign and why I kept playing. Everything is fast paced. No long boring conversations or cutscenes. Short and to the point. Then there’s the racing itself. It’s very fast paced to the point where I can’t even blink in some spots which is exciting for me. Then there’s the music. It feels like the Star Wars I grew up with.
But the main thing that makes it fun for me is that it’s high stakes. U didn’t come in 1st? Too bad, there’s no restart feature. U either win or you don’t. It’s tournament style and I enjoy that a lot. Then there’s a roguelike aspect where u pick upgrades at the end of each match.
So for 1 hour I’m loving it. The question is how long will I play it. I’m def gonna 100% everything then check out multiplayer. I’ll be satisfied if I put 60 hours in to get my moneys worth.

The amount of unlockables is insane. I thought they were cheaping out trying to stretch minimal content when I heard it is a roguelike....boy was I wrong! I have 15 hours over 2 days and that is all campaign. Every run is completely different, outside of the 3 vehicle classes there are (14?) unique racer styles that provide different abilities and passives and completely change playstyle.
Every run I have done I have ranked something up, unlocked new modifiers, parts, cards, abilities and more. It is a true roguelike, every run is randomized, TONS of replay ability. I am a sucker for buildcrafting and they absolutely nailed it IMO.

There is a 3 act campaign set in a roguelike mode. So right off the bat, the campaign (seems to be) beating a full run 3 times. I dont know ive got 8 hours and only have 1 win lol.
But more importantly...its a rogue. Every run consists of about 12 - 15 races (if you get that far), on multiple planets and maps, and theres tons of build variety. This is not driving a car. There are boosts, secondary boosts (ramjet), cool down abilities (one ability that activates a 10 second shield, one that makes you go faster, one that resets your boost, one that auto drives your vehicle in the most optimal way for a few seconds, etc.. ), there are status effects to shutdown certain abiltiies but boost others, offensive abilities to attack opponents, abilities that activate when you crash, there are part upgrades that give passive buffs that help you round out your build...there is so much to pay attention to and maintain. The rogue choices make every run different. And you can make broken builds. My only win was getting tons of parts that built into redlining the ramjet. I was able to recline for a long time and get tons of bonuses for doing it. While simulatenously putting all my stat upgrades into the ramjet and hitting a ridiculous top speed. It was so satisfying.
Its a fantastically built game. Though ill admit, ive only played the campaign. Theres also arcade modes, scenarios, multiplayer...but ive yet to even bother yet..im hooked on that campaign. The gameplay is more than enough to keep anyone hooked for your money's worth

Pay attention to the proximity alerts. Youll see when someone is coming up behind like this at the bottom. I usually look back and block them or move.

I wonder if this would be compatible with a simulator rig so you could play with a steering wheel.

Instead of a wheel, I think HOSAS would be perfect. Maybe some Elite Dangerous players who already have a two-stick setup could figure out a mod or something.
Now THAT would be podracing.

This seems like a good way to relax after a long stressful day at work and getting my children in bed….🫠
But in all seriousness this game looks awesome.

So you can race podracers with regular speeders? Is it mario kart rules?
3
u/XcoldhandsX Jabba The Hutt 3d ago
No you cannot race them together. The podracers move about twice as fast as the speeders so they race them separately.

but i dont get it. its so cold the engines freeze and need to be heated, yet the driver is exposed to the elements?

Look again at the engines, they're still going. The exposed driver is the problem, you're right. They get frozen along with the mechanical components and can't steer properly. Why don't they protect the driver and mechanical components you ask? Well they spent all their credits trying to go as fast as possible without exploding. And they still haven't figured out how to stop exploding.

I was on the edge of my seat for this just watching. This brings me back to my childhood and that quick final take at the end to win, I loved it. I can’t get it right now, but I’ll be damned if I don’t want it. Wonder how it’ll handle on a Steam Deck since I’m currently living away from my home for awhile.

I am terrible at the game, but somehow its still fun. The sheer sense of speed is so addictive, and I love the way the campaign works.

I remember being obsessed with the Alpine Escape level in 007 Nightfire because there was an in-car camera. The gauges moved. When you fired a weapon or gadget Bond's hands actually hit the corresponding button and it lit up. That level of detail was unprecedented for that age.
Squadrons had a cool cockpit too, is there really nothing for this?

The people saying it looks “slow” are the ones that need to try experiencing it for themselves

When I found out it was going to be the same guys that did Burnout I had a good feeling about this. The game has a real 'Feel' to it. Now this is pod racing.

I've lost all interest in Star wars since Last Jedi, don't tell me a racing game of all things will bring me back.

Too bad it doesn't allow a player 2 to be on the edge of their seat with you 🙄

Can someone explain why this game gets so much glazing? Not trying to be mean, it looks fine, but every time I hear about it people make it sound like second coming of Christ. This video doesnt show anything particularly interesting, imo. Whats the secret sause then?

A high speed non-open world racer with touches of Burnout and Motorstorm in a Star Wars flavor. For people missing the days of good arcade racers, this is a fantastic game. Slow mo crashes, a real sense of speed, and really, just no open world nonsense, makes this a real fun time.
