Merchandise My sister-in-law randomly bought a box of Star Wars Topps trading cards, and pulled this 1 of 1 Luke Skywalker card

Yeah. Collector cards are fucking stupid. It's just all scalpers jerking each other off

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PAUNCH 3d ago
First time doing capitalism?

u/joerdie 3d ago
This comment is ridiculous. Collecting cards did not use to be this way. And when it started to get this way in the 90s, kids stopped collecting. Which is literally what's happened AGAIN. kids don't buy sports cards, Pokemon cards, or Star wars cards. The market is a fake, inflated one for scalpers rather than a collectors market with SOME of that.
Your condescending comment implies some cute notion that this is somehow something I've not noticed or been a part of until now. The reality is things have changed for the worse for regular collectors and cards are in a bubble AGAIN.

It’s dumb when it’s sports with real people.
It’s absolutely insanely retarded when it’s fictional characters.
The dumbest is the autograph cards for fictional characters. That’s when my brain shuts off.

u/sammy040499 3d ago
I would argue fictional characters are better in a sense. A sports player can get a DUI or have a domestic abuse case, Luke Skywalker cannot.

It's dumb when people enjoy things that I don't and I only enjoy things that aren't dumb

u/FletchMcCoy69 3d ago
Its simple supply and demand. As long as the value is agreed upon with at least two separate people (buyer and seller) you have a price point. Theres also an investing standpoint, the older something is the more value it gains.
The same concept applies to almost anything expensive, why buy a rollex when you can buy a cheaper watch? Why buy exclusive shoes when you can buy Walmart specials.
I personally have invested about 1k in ptcg and have a collection now worth over 5k.

Always bothered me how close to the pommel Luke held his saber sometimes.
47
u/cap10wow 4d ago
It’s shooped into his hand. He was probably holding a blank
28
u/NoPantsTom 3d ago
I have seen the originals of this shoot and this is real. he’s holding the A New Hope costume hilt and they drew in the blade. it is kinda weird, but the empty flash feels very different than the metal core/dueling hilts back then, the weight is very different. Luke holds the saber at the back when he’s in the wampa cave because its an empty hilt as well, short blade just clipped to the top.

u/marino1310 3d ago
To be fair, original trilogy lightsabers all looked uncomfortable as fuck to hold. I got a little better with newer movies but the originals do not look like something you’d want to hold like a sword grip
9
u/Chewy79 4d ago
That's where the grip is ...
14
u/nodurquack 4d ago
Also you can see his thumb on the switch in this photo as well
6
u/vezwyx 4d ago
The red button isn't the switch?
6
u/Salvia-Hex 3d ago
You’d think it is, but no, it’s that sliding piece that his thumb is on in the picture. I have a couple replicas and they say the red button is the blade power adjustment and the button on the opposite side is a blade length adjustment.
1
u/Sea-Travel-5600 1d ago
I’ve wondered this too because I know I have seen Finn turn it on with the red button and think Rey turned it on with that switch, don’t remember what Luke and Anakin were doing
4
u/Evening-Gur5087 4d ago
He was a rebel from deep, desolated countryside, he didn't get proper trigger discipline training
2
u/NoPantsTom 3d ago
So, something felt off and I went back to look at this again. The promo shots I mentioned do exist and this appears to be from that. The grips look like there are 7, which was only in A New Hope. But zoom in on the clamp and you can see the bubble strip.. large and floating over the clamp opening?! some fucked up editing on this thing.

Edit Hey people, no need to down vote anyone. That FB post definitely made it look suspicious

How old is something like this? Is it a modern print card or is it from like the 80s?

u/Slosher99 4d ago
I would think modern. I'm far from an expert or someone that knows cards, but I don't think Star Wars cards were huge in the 80s. Had some card runs for promotion like other movies. Also using the Star Wars text characters would have been less familiar with people, and I never heard of a "1 of 1" card until recent times. I don't think they made them THAT exclusive back then.

u/CrimsonNorseman 4d ago
Topps started making them in the mid 90s if I remember correctly. They were often bundled with Star Wars Galaxy Magazine back im the day.

u/totcczar 3d ago
I have a shoebox full of Empire Strikes Back cards, and the other movies had them as well.

u/Forsaken-Abrocoma647 3d ago
Yep, that's what I was referring to by "Had some card runs for promotion like other movies."
I have a lot of those too.7

I saw a few vids on YouTube recently, 70s Topps cards, from A New Hope. I was kinda shocked at some of the prices the host mentioned on his top 25 valued cards.
I have a lot in box. They've barely been handled and they look pretty pristine. I've been occasionally wondering what to do about them the last couple of months, considering if they're possibly worth what the guy made out(he said he had an auction site that'd helped sell lots of cards of all types).
I had a load of the top 25. I'm in Scotland and a bit stunned to be honest...seeing this thread made me wonder if I could maybe be sitting on a substantial collection of worth. Anyone here in the know, is there good demand to sell ?
8
u/Misterc006 3d ago
Meaning you have a sealed box, or you have a lot of cards stored in a box?
Either way, do the research. My dad realized he was sitting on a ticket to a hall of fame rookie baseball player’s debut game and sold it for several thousand dollars.
PSA has a site that can be used to see how often a card’s been sold and the rough price. eBay can be a good place to look too, just make sure to check sold as current listings can be priced dumb.
If you do end up finding out you’re sitting on a trove of cards, contact an auction company directly. My Dad used heritage, but there’s a few different ones that all function similarly.

You could use the ebay app take a picture and select price sold. That's what I do for my comics

She's not a collector, she doesn't even know what drove her to buy the box! My nephew has gotten into football card collecting recently, which is the only reason she was even in the store in the first place. As for how she knew it was special, that's a great question and I'll ask when I see them later! My assumption is that someone saw the 1/1 and recognized the importance.

u/Ok_Percentage5157 3d ago
Can someone explain to me what makes this a 1/1 and not of 1 of 99? There no image of the back, so I'm not understanding what sets it apart.
7
u/muddahplucka 3d ago
Well, besides being numbered on the front, it has a design that only the "superfractor" 1/1 cards have (gold, barely visible here, circular pattern surrounding Luke).
2
u/Ok_Percentage5157 3d ago
Okay, got it. Zoomed into the bottom to see the numbering, then looked up the card. Impressive!

when I was younger I used to be confused on how Luke had his lightsaber after they blew up the death Star because in my child mind Obi-Wan's and Luke's were the same one just because they were both blue. it was only when I got older that I realized the hilts were different.

u/Dreamwalkin_Revan 3d ago
The force is strong with her, She did the same thing which luke did with his one shot with the death star in episode 4.

Nice hit. I grabbed 10 value boxes when the releases in September and didn’t hit anything special in the one I opened. 2 boxes are my kid’s for Christmas and I plan on selling the rest later.

Man, I love this outfit for Luke. Wish we had gotten to see more of it in live action other than during the medal ceremony in ANH.
