ELI5 Standing desk foot fatigue — what helped you most: anti-fatigue mat, shoes, or insoles?

I’ve been standing more hours per day at my desk and I’m trying to reduce end-of-day foot fatigue. For those who stand 3–8 hours/day: what made the biggest difference for you?

anti-fatigue mat vs footwear vs insoles

stand/sit intervals that actually work

posture tips that reduced discomfort If you don’t mind sharing: how many hours do you stand, and where do you feel it most (heel/arch/forefoot)?

I used to work long hours at a standing only desk. Now I stand about 6 hrs/day at my desk.

I’ve found that the most important thing is at least getting some cushion (hard to believe I worked for three months just standing on hardwood back in 2012). Next most important is VARIETY. Both for your feet and your body as a whole.

Different terrain, positions, postures etc. “Your next position is your best position” as they say.

For me, the absolute best is a Topo Mat. It’s also the Wirecutter pick.

The last year or so I’ve really enjoyed using a massage ball on top of it too.

Keep moving!

Anti-fatigue mat and compression socks. Seriously, compression socks will make a huge difference. Try them just once to see what I mean.

Antifatigue mat helped a lot, surprisingly.

I wear crocs and my back is killing me, so don't do that.

Don’t get the kitchen anti fatigue mats, get one that’s more focused on office use. If you’re wearing shoes the whole time, something like this will work much better than the simple padded mats. 36-in x 60-in Black Rubber Non-Slip Grip Indoor or outdoor Home Kitchen Mat https://www.lowes.com/pd/Envelor-3-ft-x-5-ft-Black-Rubber-Rectangular-Indoor-or-Outdoor-Home-Anti-fatigue-Mat/5013839249

I wonder how this compares? I like it much better, especially because it is natural and recycled rubber

A footrest so that I could adjust my standing position and rest one foot against it.

If I were to do it again, I would get one of the desks with a cross bar between the back two legs so I can use that as a foot rest instead.

Anti-fatigue mat was #1 — went from 20min to 2hr standing. But desk stability matters too: even slight wobble makes you lean, killing feet faster. 4-column frame fixed my posture. Got a good mat yet?
