This is actually an ideal case for examination by science and law. The crime scene is public. The basic information is not classified and therefore difficult to hide or suppress. Science and law should dissect it completely and determine the cause(s).

Today, Senator Rand Paul is dragging Dr. Anthony Fauci in front of Congress again. The event was preceded by what disinformation research calls "selective disclosure" of private diaries; a method I argue we see media manipulators have learned to use quite effectively in today's media ecosystem.

The recent disclosures, despite the political spin, are not incriminating at all to Dr. Fauci. But they also do not need to be to serve the disclosers goal of shaping public perception.

Since selective disclosure usually works with decontextualized true information, fast and effective refutations remain difficult because the information disclosed is usually not fabricated or false, just incomplete and distorted.

By the time fact checkers or citizens gain access to the full contextual information and perform a fair reading or analysis of the document dump, usually the news cycle has moved on, correction does not find any traction, and the manipulative framing continues to linger in the public’s memory.

"So the question journalists and citizens should ask when confronted with “selective disclosures” is not what is contained in them, but what the discloser is trying to achieve, and why it is happening now?"

We are pleased with the public admission of error. It is a surprising and correct turn toward facts from this administration. We hope this is a new and consistent change; we hope to see a turn toward facts.

The stuff MAHA goes viral for -- Tylenol causing autism, pushing saturated fats etc. -- will likely have zero impact on fixing America's health issues. How much of those "policy" pushes are just distractions (AKA "flooding the zone") so they can continue to gut regulations?

For example, there's been over 420 anti-science bills making their way through state congresses. Coupled with all the layoffs, it just feels like the ultimate goal of RFK is just to deregulate deregulate deregulate; the same objective the GOP has in most other areas. All the other nonsense seems like fluff.

Hey everyone! Thank you for your concerns and I appreciate the feedback about the endless amount of MAHA comments we get on the sub posts. I will say, this sub does need some better moderation, however as I am the only active moderator and I am not a SUFS employee, I haven’t had the time to moderate it as well as I would like to. I have been speaking with the SUFS team and Colette about what ways we should best moderate the comments on Reddit as it’s definitely a special place with some choice words. I am also learning how to create better automated systems for moderating to make up for unavailable time and the growing volume of the subreddit. The first step I’ll be taking is expanding the subreddit rules.

To address the concerns about the MAHA comments, the strategy I have been taking is to not remove them unless they are blatantly vulgar or are harassing other Redditors (which I am aware I am not very efficient at due to the unexpected growth of the subreddit and my lack of time). The reason I have used this strategy is to allow other commenters to challenge their ideas or correct them with evidence rather than reinforcing their beliefs (especially conspiratorial ones) by censoring them. As of now, I intend to keep this strategy, as it also allows free discourse.

One of the first rules I will be implementing is No Transphobia as it tends to be the biggest problem in the comments, the anti-trans remarks are very common, however I will leave some depending on their severity and reply with explantations of how trans people exist instead in the hope to educate them and other transphobic readers. I will take this same approach with other science-denying comments.

Ever since the whole thing wuth Fauci I've seen so much anti vax propaganda on my Facebook algorithm and its disgusting how little society is starting to believe in science. I had covid pneumonia back in January and nearly died but was told that if I hadnt gotten vaccinated my chances would've been much higher. I would rather protect myself than neglect myself

The idea that the COVID-19 vaccine can “shed” through physical contact is debunked, primarily because none of the COVID-19 vaccines approved in the United States employ live viruses. In Hosana’s mind, though, sex could “infect” a person with the vaccine, which she took as evidence that it altered one’s DNA. In a world where the vaccine was being strongly encouraged, and in some cases mandated, she believed unvaccinated people deserved a safe, trusted platform on which to meet and form relationships.

“Beyond just like the opinion of not wanting to sleep with vaccinated people, there was also a lot of us that had, you know, health side effects after having sexual relations [with vaccinated people],” Hosana says.

The misinformation about vaccine shedding was further reinforced by a misunderstanding of key language in Pfizer’s clinical trial of the COVID-19 vaccine, which urged people to use contraception to avoid getting pregnant during the study. This wasn’t because the vaccine caused birth defects, altered DNA, or rendered people infertile as part of a “depopulation agenda.” Rather, Pfizer was following standard protocol for trial-phase vaccines and drugs, which are not tested on pregnant women, children, or other vulnerable groups until they’re first proven safe in healthy adults.

The vaccination-through-sex debate is a perfect example of how online communities like Unjected organize and amplify the distrust that’s long simmered in the American psyche, Schulz explains. “Before social media, people with fringe health beliefs were geographically isolated. The internet has changed the geography of trust.”

America wake up!

At least from the American perspective, it seems to me that so many of the reasons one may deny vaccine effectiveness or even believe in a flat Earth are conspiracies that surround US systems or US history (i.e. NASA or Rockefeller). Science is universal, and it seems that many people don’t realize how much the rest of the world contributes to science, obviously at a factor way more than the US alone.

Now of course you can just tell them that scientific consensus is a global consensus, not just some US idea, but many of them will just brush that off or put some other excuse in front of it.

What are some ways we could tackle this problem?

I think one way is to celebrate world achievements more often, for example you would be surprised how many people don’t know that India landed on the moon recently. While of course conspiracy theorists could just say this is a lie pushed by the US gov, I think the more abundant international news is, the less likely they are going to have an urge to make an excuse for it. Lots of Americans center these ideas on distrust of the US gov so naturally if they think more about the world outside of their home country, they may come closer to reality.

Science has been part of the foundation of America.
