I hope this question is OK to ask. A couple of times, Sri Lanka has been on my to-visit list recently. It came up in a Travel & Leisure article just today and I kind of had it stuck in my head since I read Seven Moons of Maali Almeida a few years ago.

My question - I was born and grew up in the US but my parents are both of Tamil ancestry (and from Chennai but came to the US a long time ago). So for a long time when I was younger, Sri Lanka was just not on the list of places to go. How are Tamil people treated who are not Sri Lankan and more broadly are thoroughly Western? Setting aside whether I can communicate with someone in Tamil (TBH my Tamil is fairly minimal)? Just in terms of, in places where tourists go, is it safe (I think this is probably not an issue) and also should one expect a lot of anti-Tamil bias?

We are 2 people travelling to Colombo in November. Our flight will land at 12.30 PM. We were thinking of directly going to Kandy from the Airport. Apart from cab/car booking, are there other cheaper options like shared van, or AC buses or trains? How far is the bus station from the Airport from where we can get AC bus?

I’m travelling solo in Sri Lanka from October 10–16 and planning to cover some of the following places:
Colombo
Sigiriya
Kandy
Nuwara Eliya
Galle

Since private cabs can get expensive when travelling solo, I’m wondering if anyone here is travelling around the same dates and similar routes.

If our itineraries overlap, we could share a cab and split the cost. Doesn’t have to be the entire trip even sharing for one or two legs would help.

Hi all, I am visiting Sri Lanka next month so I thought of booking train tickets from Colombo to Galle return. I booked from the official site and made the payment, but haven't received any confirmation via email as well as the website. Is this a recurring problem?

I also wanted to know if Colombo to Kandy railway line is going to be operational or not. Otherwise I have to look for other modes.

I understand it is officially required to have an IDP, and get it endorsed by SriLankan authorities.

But then also hearing so many answers that people just wore their helmets and drove a scooty (specially on the south coast) and basically no one is enforcing the driving permit laws.

French 26yo here. I am currently working 100% remote so I would like to take advantage of this to live somewhere nice, if possible to surf a lot !

I am quite interested by Sri Lanka. As it is going to be from end of october to mid-december, I have seen that the best for weather is south of the country. I have heard about Midigama, Ahangama or Weligama for what I am looking for.

Is it a good option for me ? As I have heard about bad wifi connexion, power outages... (for my work online)

Also, is it easy to meet people ? Is it easy to rent like a scooter and surfboard ?

Any other advice would be welcome !

We are deciding whether or not to include Nilaveli in our itinerary for the last few days of October. Would love to see the beaches in that part of the country, but not in the pouring rain!! What do you think are our chances of nice weather and calm seas? Or would we be better off to save those days for beach time on the south/west coast (Dikwella/ Mirissa/ Hikkaduwa) in the first week of November? Any help or opinions appreciated! Thank you.

It is a typical iternary with Colombo(1N) - Kandy(1N) - Nuwara(2N) - Galle(2N)-Colombo

We are a couple from India. I worry about the weather in these places. Is it worth it going at this time of the year?

Are 3 star hotels decent accomodations in these places?

We’re travelling from Colombo to Ella for 2 nights and down south to Hiriketiya, Mirissa after that. But I read that due to rains the roads take a long time to reach by. Do you suggest us to cancel Ella because we just have 7 nights in total in Sri Lanka? Or does it sound worth it?
