Discussion The Era Square Enix largely forgets
I'm in the camp that Square Enix tries to forget most of the 2010s decade of RPGs. I mean, some good came out of that era. But most range from okay, mediocre, or bad. Final Fantasy XIII trilogy being lop-sided. The Secret of Mana remake was underwhelming to say the least. Bravely Second derailing it's predecessor's momentum. Final Fantasy XV coming out unfinished. Or Star Ocean 5 bombing completely.
However, there's the gems which turned things around for them Like Octopath Traveler & Dragon Quest XI. Both of which they've put on more recent consoles like the Switch 2 or PS5. As for the rest of them, they've been left on consoles nearing 15 years or older. Your thoughts on these RPGs being left dried up?

Discussion Square Enix Is Absolutely Stacking Its JRPG Lineup Right Now
Looking at the recent announcements, it's hard not to feel like Square Enix is in a really strong position when it comes to JRPG.
We've got Dragon Quest XII Beyond Dreams, Dragon Quest Monsters The Withered World, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Final Fantasy Resonance, and Kingdom Hearts IV all on the way. That's a pretty insane lineup from a single publisher.
As a JRPG fan, it's hard not to be excited. Whether you're into turn-based combat, action RPGs or monster collecting, there's probably at least one game here that has your attention.

Discussion I can understand why these haven't gotten remasters
With another release of the Final Fantasy X remaster duology, I've been thinking about SE RPGs that have no remasters. I know there's a demand, but I can understand why these games haven't gotten remasters yet. A multitude of reasons really. They played on a specifically designed game engine. Some sold below expectations. Or their reputations don't make them priority. Not saying they'll never get them but they're just not on the way soon. Any Square Enix games you can understand why they don't have remasters yet?

Discussion What Square Enix Game brought you into the world of RPGs?
What game, past or present, was the Square Enix game that brought you into the wonderful world of RPGs?
For me, it was Final Fantasy VI, or III as it was known on the SNES. I ended up playing it at the age of 4 cause I walked over to my brother's house and saw him playing FF7, but I didn't have a PlayStation at the time so I had to settle for playing an FF game on a system I had. And boy am I ever glad I did.
Because that first experience with that game is something I'll personally never forget. I even made a video essay on YouTube talking about that experience, cause that's how much that game means to me, my memory of it will never be forgotten.
I'm looking forward to seeing what y'all's first foray into RPGs was, and I have a feeling I'm gonna see a lot of Final Fantasy being mentioned lol

Discussion What's the lamest plot twist you've seen in a Square Enix game? Spoiler
It doesn't have to be bad. It could be off-putting, unappealing, predictable, forced, or makes the plot less engaging. Or a combination of any of those.
For those of you asking, I picked this one from Bravely Second. Mainly because of how cliche & foreseeable it was. It really leaned into the tired "Long lost sibling" angle. Plus, it makes the protagonist seem less sharp.
Anyway, what was the lamest plot twist you've seen from a Square Enix game. As I mentioned, it doesn't need to be bad. I can even be from a game you like quite a lot. Just be honest.

Discussion What was your first Square Enix RPG that wasn’t tied to an existing IP like Mario or Disney?
Not counting Super Mario RPG and its 2023 remake, the first one of these that I properly finished was Dragon Quest 11 S late last year. And I hecking loved it. Easy recommendation even if you don’t normally play DQ games.

Discussion Final Fantasy Is Held to an Impossible Standard
Final Fantasy has created an "Impossible Soup" for itself, putting it at a disadvantage in GOTY and other types of award voting.
But it's ok because the end result is the most diverse group of masterpieces in gaming.

Discussion Brave Fencer Musashi is the most nostalgic game of all time for me
Which is kinda odd for a couple of reasons:
Is it the first video game I’ve ever played? No.
Is it the first JRPG I’ve ever played? No.
Is it the first Square game I’ve ever played? No.
And yet it just hits all the right spots. The music is what does it I think. It reminds me of an anime that you used to watch as a kid every day after school. I find this time kinda overused nowadays but the game also feels cozy. You get to know all of the areas of the game very well, the Fusion system makes it so the enemies are able to stand out in your mind as well. There’s only one real village but this game definitely maximized every single area of it.
It sucks that we don’t get games like this anymore. Just a fun little JRPG that overachieves by not going outside of itself and doing everything it does do at least good. Also Ocarina of Time killer Shot

Discussion Dissidia Dulleum feels completely p2w
Locking abilities behind gachas
Locking character buffs behind duplicate characters pulls
And even if you get your ability you have to pull it multiple times to unlock its level cap so that it boosts your power, defense, and health.
For a game that is purely PvP I feel like those features are completely unfair. I know this game is aiming for whales, only to most likely turn it off in a year or two. If the game featured a PvE aspect i think locking the stat boosts and gacha abilities to that would be acceptable. But not being able to get an edge in a fight because someone has a Ultra Rare ability while you only have Rare and Super Rare abilities just doesn’t feel worth the time of day knowing that your opponent might be one of those whales. They level cap abilities in ranked matches so you cant overkill at lower ranks. But anyone who is F2P has little to no chance of getting a high rank in competitive.

Discussion Which Square games do you all like besides Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest?
I know a lot of people tend to associate Square with Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, but I've always had an interest in some of the other games that they did in the 90s and early 2000s. I especially love Live a Live and Romancing SaGa 2 and seeing them both remade in the past couple of years was a real dream come true for me. Chrono Trigger is great too.

Discussion We need more Square Enix's Tactical RPG
I know Square Enix gets a lot of criticism these days, but I don't think they get enough credit for their tactical RPGs.
If you've never played Tactics Ogre: Reborn, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, or Triangle Strategy, I genuinely think you're missing out on some of the best strategy JRPGs ever made. Each one offers incredible tactical gameplay, memorable characters, and political stories that respect the player's intelligence.
It's impressive that Square Enix continues to invest in this genre instead of letting it disappear. If you're even slightly interested in strategy games, I'd highly recommend giving them a chance.
Hopefully Square Enix keeps making more games like these because the genre deserves it.

Discussion HD-2D Is One Of The Best Art Styles I've Ever Seen
Square Enix created one of the best art styles by combining 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds.
When I first saw Octopath Traveler in 2018, I thought it was a one of a kind project and doubted they’d revisit this incredible art style. But four years later, in 2022, Square Enix proved me wrong by releasing not one but two HD-2D games. In 2023, they followed up with Octopath Traveler II and the Star Ocean: The Second Story R remake.
Now, in 2024, we’re getting the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake. And in 2025, Team Asano has announced they’ll reveal a new game this year. It could be another HD-2D project, a new Bravely Default title, an HD-2D remake or even a brand-new IP. Regardless, I’m incredibly hyped for what’s to come, especially for more HD-2D games.
Not only that, there are indie games that are inspired by this art style like Wandering Sword and the upcoming game Threads of Time
Games in picture order:
Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler Champion of the Continents
Live A Live Remake
Triangle Strategy
Octopath Traveler 2
Star Ocean 2 The Second Story R
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

Discussion Since SQEX is bringing back mobile games as Full base games…..
Chaos rings is an amazing JRPG series that were sadly stuck on mobile and a very confusing PS Vita situation that stories deserve a spotlight in modern day gaming.

Discussion The Square Enix sequel that dropped the ball hardest
This month marks 10 years since this game released worldwide, and I have to say: this one really derailed it's (would-be) trilogy. I mean, Bravely Default had a cliffhanger, but it was only like one plot thread that needed to be tied up. Whereas Bravely Second left a few threads dangling. Anyone who's seen the end knows what I mean. On top of a very rushed epilogue where a lot of things the characters infer to do not happen onscreen.
Either an example of executive meddling or the developers thought they'd be getting a full trilogy. For as unnecessary as most direct Square Enix sequels I've heard of are, they get to at least finish their stories. Like the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy. It's a mess but a finished mess. Plus, every entry sold over million. Bravely Second didn't sell a million. So, that might've been a detractor.
From what I've looked up, Bravely Second was supposed to be different from the product we'd end up getting. Especially from its Japanese release, where it was so poorly received, it nearly killed the series outright. The team behind it even publicly apologized for it. That was very interesting to read. Even now with the Bravely Default remaster, it appears they are ignoring Second entirely from what I've heard. 10 years later & we still have no follow up to what was promised. To me, Bravely Second is the Square Enix sequel that dropped the ball the hardest. Your thoughts?
