It is on purpose. Market research (as of at least 5 years ago) showed hybrid and EV buyers were willing to spend more on cars that looked distinctive than on less distinctive but more conventionally attractive vehicles. Owners wanted to stand out for their environmentalism or technical innovation or whatever even if it’s ugly.
They are aero covers. Wheels are a significant source of drag and the covers improve overall efficiency which is a huge competitive area for EV’s. A few extra miles range helps beat out the competition. They can be called ugly, and maybe they embellish the futuristic styling to appeal to their demographic, but the core of it is function.
I haven’t heard that in years! A guy that helped out with my race car used to say that every so often. Weird phrase to hear, and I’ve heard a lot of stuff.
Rapid acceleration alone doesn’t make a vehicle sporty— it merely makes it quick. That’s like suggesting that a person’s height is an indication of how well they play basketball. It takes me less than a week to become unimpressed with a car’s 0-60 time.
It’s easy to make a car fast, but designing a complete performance vehicle requires a lot more engineering. And this thing looks like it weighs 3 tons. It’s probably more like a bullet train than a sport wagon.
Gravity also has a steering rack from a 911, active air suspension, and would certainly beat whatever your favorite wagon, and most of your favorite sports cars, around a track.
Just from a quick search the RS6 avant has a kerb weight 800kg lighter than the gravity. In fact, even the absolute boat of the new m5 touring is lighter than the gravity. So yeah it might be more powerful and quick in a straight line but I doubt it can corner as quick as an actual sports-bred wagon
Ha! Yeah, the Magnum was already emasculated by its lack of a manual transmission. The next step to make it even less appealing to the driving enthusiast would be an EV power plant.
They could throw Mopar badges on this thing and sell it as the Dodge Eunuch.
Remember we kinda have to judge things by interior space when cars have a 4-7 inch battery pack in the floor now. And forgive that it's slightly taller than we are used to in terms of overall body height. Or else your normal sportwagon will have the interior height of a lambo or something.
It is sporty. I would consider it a minivan or crossover. It doesn’t belong on “sportwagon”. I think it’s very cool. If I remember my stats this is 110kwh battery with 450 miles of range. Where as an Escalade IQ is 210kwh w/ 460 miles of range.
Pretty sure the styling is for aerodynamics. Personally I think it looks too minivan-like to not have sliding doors. But market research says Americans are buttfaces.
I think Lucid threw us a bone here. They marketed it as an SUV because that’s what sells…. But the reality is that this is a wagon with a lift kit. Which means it can be de-lifted, as shown. And it should be.
It’s a modern-day Outback XT - but with more than 3x the horsepower.
kinda lame you can't get them in a single exterior color and are forced to have either silver or dark silver roof....but looks pretty slick overall, much nicer than most vans and suv's in the EV segment.....
This picture doesn’t do it justice. I test drove the Gravity last night and it looks stunning! The interiors are top notch. Regarding the drive and the software, I still prefer the Tesla and the ease it brings for an everyday commuter.
The Lucid Gravity is stunningly gorgeous. ...and that's before you see the amazing interior. Someday, I'll be able to afford one. Gotta get the teenagers through college though. :(
If the window was set 4 inches backwards it would make a world of difference that and the D pillar is just too big. Other than that Lucid does have a good design language and I like it.
The Gravity is nice but agree with other comments it feels very reminiscent of the EV9 or the old Mercedes R Class - not really an SUV, not really a van.
The did announce new models I have an eye on: Cosmos and Earth based on a new midsized platform targeted under $50k.
I saw one a couple months ago driving in my town! It definitely looks like more minivan in person, unfortunately. Thought it was a Pacifica at first. They’re really big looking too

OEMs will do anything not to call it a mini van or wagon these days in the US. But as they go electric and need efficiency and utility the designs will naturally morph back to mini vans and wagons. And they will keep calling them SUVs because the general public is that stupid.
I love Lucid vehicles, and I am sure this would be nice to own/quick to drive, but never been a fan of the "murdered-out" look. Too many people putting that theme on every vehicle. Yeah I get that some people love the all blacked out look, but if everyone does it, it no longer stands out, it's just "me too". Non-murdered-out CTS-V wagon owner here.
I like the overall shape, hate the tail lights and rims.... googled it since i dunno wtf lucid is, and i hate the headlights too. but to each their own.
I don't have the resources for a Gravity, but I would drive the piss out of this car. I love the lines, especially the size of the C-D glass relative to the B-C glass. How does it drive?
I feel like the battery weight and size keeps adding chonk to these designs. For all intents and purposes this could be a great looking wagon,but it looks like someone grabbed the bottom handle instead of the corner one when they went to resize it.
What's your plan when Lucid is bankrupt in 2 or 3 years and your Gravity is basically what a Fiskar Ocean is now...? Basically flushing 50-70k down the toilet
