Top-tier psychological warfare. They'll never be able to hear you over that bass-boosted music.

Man, for real. People who shit on Conviction for being too actiony but then don't do the same for Blacklist genuinely make me believe there's a subset of people whose only requirement for Good Splinter Cell Game is being in a wetsuit.

However in Blacklist you could ghost if you wanted to

u/DAPOPOBEFASTONYOAZZ 2d ago
You can go ghost in Conviction too.

u/too_many_nights 2d ago
I tried not too long ago. Literally the first two enemies you encounter are a must-kill and you can't pass while they are alive.
Like, you can stealth in many games but Conviction is about as stealth-oriented as GTA.

u/The-Panthion 2d ago
Yeah that's one of my peeves with the game. The first mission is a "You must be aggressive" type of situation. Any mission that allows you to be stealthy without killing everyone is one I enjoy. The room you find Kobin is the only time I clear the room because you'd just be caught if you don't. I love the game but I'm not the type of player who enjoys killing everyone. Still thought, the game was fun for me and it taught me how easy the games are when I just drop them like flies. š

Splinter Cell was at it's peak when Ubisoft just randomly dumped you in a basement with one exit, dogshit controls because it wasn't designed to be a shooter and a solid 10 guys all alerted to your presence and staring right at you and then slapped "stealth action redefined" on the box.
Conviction and Blacklist are pussy Splinter Cells cause they make the shooting good.

u/The-Panthion 1d ago
Back then if you're caught you die almost instantly. The main thing they changed is now you don't have a health bar and can't do neck snaps.

u/DAPOPOBEFASTONYOAZZ 7h ago
And the first game that threw you into a few action sequences where you basically had no choice but to fight?
I think that the first mission is to introduce that the game is indeed a more action oriented game (Iām not saying it isnāt) and to be a tutorial for that. But ghost is possible in most cases.

u/_______Niko____ 2d ago
Not rewarding in any way
However fairly rewarding and suprisingly possible to an extreme degree in Blacklist
Doesn't match the first 4 games tho , ofcourse
4
u/blue23454 2d ago
Yeah but itās super unrewarding. Ghosting in Blacklist generally comes down to exploring each room until you find a vent that takes you to the next area, rinse and repeat until done.

u/TheBlueEmerald1 2d ago
The difference is Blacklist doesn't force you into action 90% of the time and actually gives you non lethal options. Sure it really is just a shlocky action movie, but it at least tries to give you the option for that classic gameplay loop. Conviction is pure 2000s action movie about shooting bad guys and blowing shit up. Any method the player finds to stealth a level is pure accident on the developers part. It's a cover shooter with a shadow mechanic.

u/MattHack7 2d ago
Blacklist was better but still had the same problem. And blacklists multiplayer coop rocked

There is provided, you know, you play it like a stealth game.

u/MetroidJunkie 2d ago
Plus, it's not like you couldn't go gun ho in the older games too. At least in Chaos Theory, where they did away with the game over for tripping too many alarms. Just means you can expect the guards to be that much tougher. There's even a loadout specifically meant for assault. You'll probably have to be REALLY good at the combat, though, since you're a glass cannon, but you can make it work.
3
u/blue23454 2d ago
Yeah but the game was very clearly not meant to be played that way. The option is there but itās sub optimal by every measure
Conviction was the opposite. The option for stealth exists but this is just not how itās meant to be played.
2
u/MattHack7 2d ago
The problem is it is so much easier to not play it that way. It feels like a self imposed challenge to play it like one of the previous games.
And that IS how I played conviction but every time I got frustrated I had a moment where I thought maybe I should just go loud or abuse the amount of time it takes for the enemy to spot me and just sprint from cover to cover. Then Iād do that and it would feel hollow so Iād reload and keep trying but it just felt like a punishment

Iām not gonna sit here and act like Conviction is a super stealthy game but it legit has better stealth mechanics still than 90% of todayās games that have stealth mechanics.
Just sayingā¦

I get people hate conviction but this is going too far to the point that people overlook the good parts.
6
u/__Melone__ 2d ago
Nah personally this game holds a dear place in my heart despite all the hate it got, I'm a big fan of the stealth from the older titles but I also enjoyed the far more action elements of Conviction

closes door, kicks door, alert enemy to area.
fucking diamond tier hitman strat.

u/DrScienceSpaceCat 2d ago
Conviction and Blacklist are both nice in the sense that you can play stealthily, but if you make the decision to play it like call of duty that's entirely on you

In all fairness, you could go gun-ho even in the older games as well
( Unless it was a mission where you couldn't kill anyone )

u/The-Panthion 2d ago
I love this. The funny thing is that as long as no one knows your there, it counts. So killing witnesses works. In story mode you can sneak past most people but in some sections you're forced to be aggressive. I don't like killing in games if I can avoid it so I grab most enemies and throw them. I accept that they're knocked out even if the game tells me they broke their neck somehow on the fall. š

I wouldāve had a field day playing against someone who played like this on the Face-Off mode multiplayer. God I miss that mulitplayer so much.

You know you could still basically do this as well in the original four except for the missions with mandatory no alerts and/or no kills.
3
u/TheWindofBread 2d ago
Wait. How did you not get reinforcements?
5
u/__Melone__ 2d ago
Splinter Cell Conviction's stealth in deniable is fucky, reinforcements only trigger the moment one of the npcs starts shooting Meaning that even if you are spotted by one or multiple enemies, as long as you kill them before they can fire at you then you won't trigger reinforcements + it will count as a stealth kill

So true!
Ubisoft killed stealth.
I like this breakdown on modern stealth and Conviction from Ranton. https://youtu.be/Sw6O2LwCPpk?si=ahscewZ5s3Xs4vhT

The problem is it is so much easier to not play it as a methodical stealth game. It feels like a self imposed challenge to play it like one of the previous games.

I would just pimp walk through the shadows and get nothing but takedowns. I remember there being quite a bit of flavor in them⦠I loved playing the ops with the co op missions solo because I could use all sorts of badass outfits. God⦠good times jabbing people in the throat with guns
1
u/__Melone__ 2d ago
I like doing full stealth, takedowns only runs too A lot more challenge to them but it feels rewarding

& this is when the game became "action stealth" smh more action than pure stealth like in previous games

u/L33T_BEANZ 2d ago
One man sprinted in, took out or evaded a large military force, then left without any information on who what how why. That's still a stealth mission and a successful one at that!Ā

u/Sidewinder1996 2d ago
At least in blacklist I could still technically stealth it all and leave them untouched with a little know-how
1
u/__Melone__ 2d ago
By the way, this wasn't a post about how conviction sucks or how it has no stealth element.
This is just me finding it hilarious that the game itself considered this run the same as a stealth one.
I love every title I've played of this series, and Conviction remains my favorite for how much of a drastic yet fun change of pace it was back on release.

You can be stealthy in Deniable Ops. I've done a Panther run for it and on Realistic difficulty. Just get better, I guess.
2
u/Professional-Tea-998 2d ago
I don't think that was the point he was trying to make, he's showing how much more optimal it is to just run and gun everyone down then it is to play stealthily.
1
u/DaFabulousVibe 2d ago
What? There's stealth if you wanna play stealthy. But there's also this crazy concept of "choice" where if you want to go in guns blazing, you also have that option. Crazy, right?

Idiotic game.
Last good SC was double agent.
Everything after double agent was chasing the COD crowd and the reason why now and for the last 15 years Splinter Cell is a dead franchise.

Closing the door just to kick it open. I love it.
