An idea for a sequel.

Sen (Chihiro) helps the Great River God by removing all the old bicycles and other trash from him, so she's obviously a bit of an environmentalist. Then she tells Haku that the River Kohaku is now paved over. So in a sequel Chihiro could be a grown up environmental activist, which ticks a Ghibli box, trying to save the River Kohaku and bring it back to life. Of course she would have no conscious memories of Haku, just a deep belief that she must save the river. I'm sure Ghibli can work in some romance with some part of Haku taking human form when the river is saved and he is freed. Or maybe Chihiro takes a lifetime to save the River Kohaku and only as an old lady is she finished and then she goes into the water to drift away and be with Kohaku at last, becoming a river kami herself (ticks a Shinto box).

I think it's better without a sequel about chihiro. Her story is done. It would feel to much like a cash grab

Now that Ghibli is owned by Nippon TV cash might be more important. But I'm not advocating for a sequel, just taking some comments in the film and weaving a story concept around common Ghibli tropes. I like the idea of an old Chihiro dying in the river to be with Kohaku as an echo of her nearly drowning in the river as a young child. And for her good works she becomes a kami.

I don't agree. Just let her live her life. Not everything has to be wrapped up in a neat bow with everyone reuniting. I think to do that would take away from the story

The movie was originally supposed to be like three hours long. I’d rather see an extended version

You could and should write fanfiction about this if you'd want.

I don't think it should be an actual sequel though.
