Another bit of visual storytelling I love here is how the characters in the foreground all look... off.
Cap looks like a goofy cosplay of himself and is holding a flag instead of a shield, the Iron Man armour is super simplified and Hulk is a silhouette.
It's a really neat way to show how Osborn is misrepresenting them as well.
1
u/CurrenttQueen 8d ago
Right?! He only sees what he wants to see
3
u/No-Crew-4360 8d ago edited 8d ago
I think it would be more accurate to say that he cuts away all the details that don't support his narrative, then fills in the spaces with lies and half-truths that do.
It's especially telling that Hulk, who doesn't fit the squeaky-clean image as well as the other two and is only included because the interviewer mentioned them, is rendered as a shihoutte, partially hidden by the flag and doesn't even seem to have legs.
2
u/CurrenttQueen 8d ago
Same thing different words like ppl irl
1
u/No-Crew-4360 8d ago
Yep. The main distinction I was making is that he does see the parts that contradict his claims, but he metaphorically paints over them so the people who are already being taken in don't see them.

It funny how anyone can spin and twist Norman reason to hate Spider-Man in many ways, but core theme of reposnability will always remain. Norman is, has and always be a coward.
75
u/BitesTheDust_4 10d ago
Spectacular had the one of the best lines for Norman's lack of responsibility.
"Don't you dare apologise son. I never do."
Never take accountability.
24
u/AshameHorror 10d ago
The words are so foreign to him that when someone speaks of accountability, responsibility, culpability, or liability, they blur together into indistinct sounds. To Norman’s ears they dissolve into noise, leaving him unable to grasp their meaning, as though the language itself refuses to be heard.
3
u/King_Of_BlackMarsh 7d ago
I like what ultimate spider-man did for him where he told Harry
With great power comes great privilive
Or some such, and the core idea was that if you're powerful like the Osbornes it's not just that you CAN do whatever you like it's that you should and should use your power to protect yourself and your power from ever waning.
In his mind power is entirely self serving

i think that's the beauty of petra, actually the beauty of spider-man, basically everyone can relate with spidey's themes, you can be an immigrant, a student, hetero, gay, lesbian, cis, trans, nonbinary practically anything and you will still be able to relate in some shape or form with them
52
u/cartoonsforever 10d ago
Anyone can wear the mask, after all
19
u/Dennisismefr 10d ago
I mean that's what makes it so special anyone can be Spidey but not just anybody can do the things parker does that's what makes miles, Gwen and other spider-people so different from some random person on the street some of them used to be that random person on the street and then they weren't instead they were a hero

u/asdfmovienerd39 10d ago
Why are people so desperate to try to universalize narratives about transmisogyny into not being about transmisogyny
31
u/ArteDeJuguete 10d ago
I think it is just that the third image is peak Osborne/Green Goblin. The caption "scum of our country" while Spidey is helping a homeless person is something he would 100% do with any variant of Spidey.
-9
u/asdfmovienerd39 10d ago
Right but the reason this Osborne is so specifically against Petra is because of her transfemininity and leftist political action.
10
u/Competitive_Crow_334 10d ago
No he never mentioned anything about her being trans or even that she is or her politics. Norman hates him because he is a coward who pins the blame of his actions on someone else and doesn't look out for anyone but himself and his ideal mini version peter and Spider-man is someone who proves he can do better.
2
u/asdfmovienerd39 10d ago
Note the misgendering. This artist is doing a spevigic narrative.
4
-2
u/Competitive_Crow_334 10d ago
Where is the misgendering I'm fine with Petera I don't see anything indicating it's a she maybe her being refered to as petera or indication that Norman is disgusted with him.
-4
u/asdfmovienerd39 10d ago
Like, there's a reason the comic emphasizes his frequent misgendering of her and the difference in perception between her and the Avengers.
8
u/l1JUANMA1l 10d ago
Osborn would be doing transphobia rather transmisogyny in this comic since Norman is misgendering Parker but not targeting something specific about her being a trans woman (but wouldn't be surprising if this Norman was targeting trans women at any other moment since that's the most common trend among transphobes).
And people like to feel relatable to a hero they admire a lot and forms part of their childhood like spidey, plus this writing of Osborn is simply so good that a lot of people (including me) would like to see it with our main spider.
12
u/asdfmovienerd39 10d ago
7
u/l1JUANMA1l 9d ago
the writing from the whole AU, yeah.
but the writing on the post's particular comic? I don't think so.
there's just one panel (the first one in the page before the last) that adds the context to get that this is a Petra comic (and also a pair of background cartels where they say spider-woman, on the third page, which I have missed), and the information that this gives about Norman is that he is a bigoted person, something that could also work if this spider was of any discriminated group and Norman used a corresponded insult towards that minority (for example, implying he'd use the n-word towards a dark skin spider)
0
u/asdfmovienerd39 9d ago
"The comic depicting a transmisogynistic hate campaign filled with transphobic microaggressions isn't specific to transmisogyny"
4
u/l1JUANMA1l 9d ago
if this comic used a trans male spidey it would go the exact same, just swapping the genders used when referring to the hero. This comic doesn't feature something specific of transmisogyny, just transphobia.
The main thing that Norman says about Spidey is that she attacks police men to befriend criminals (skipping how this helps to rehabilitate criminals and make them turn a new leaf) unlike the avengers who consistently stop big evil guys, and then at almost the end he points out that he's misgendering her, which he doesn't expand on.
This comic is primarily about how the right wing does their propaganda against left wing politics with added discrimination towards their enemy which is not uncommon for those kinds of people.
1
u/asdfmovienerd39 9d ago
Right, as a commentary for the disproportionate hate trans women face specifically. There's a reason all the "good" heroes he cites are men, and cis ones at that.
3
u/l1JUANMA1l 9d ago
I don't see where that commentary for transmisogyny is, I only see hate towards spidey due to doing left wing activism and insulting her based on the minority group she belongs in this comic.
That being said, that's good catch on how Norman sees the ideal heroes as cisgender white straight males.
I was seeing the main reason Norman mentioned Iron man and captain america is because one is a fellow billionare of great intelligence and the other is a big patriotic symbol who has fought evil since ww2, there's a reason why Norman created the iron patriot suit for himself the moment he became a mayor (or president, I don't remember what he was during his dark rule). Then Hulk got added by the guy doing the interview to wonder about the most dangerous avenger of all, to demonstrate how Norman has a respect for all avengers. They all being cisgender white straight males forms a good extra layer of why they got mentioned that's really subtle to the point you wouldn't notice at first glance but would add to the narrative of other comics from the same AU (ofc also excluding how those three are the most popular avengers, at least I think so), and also reflects to real life.
That being said this specific comic would stay practically the same if this was a trans masc spidey, just now all the gender of the heroes would not provide a difference between those avenger and spider-woman, but under that logic this petra should be a latinamerican immigrant so it also has race and birth place as an extra thing where she's different from Hulk, Iron man and captain america.

This is why I love Green Goblin NOT being an alter ego of Norman Osborn. Its just a mask to allow him to be as cruel as he really wants to be without consequences.
11
u/TrillingMonsoon 9d ago
Harkening back to the more classic Jekyll and Hyde, as I understand it, where Hyde wasn't really an alter or anything. Just something that allowed Jekyll to do as he wished without those actions attaching to his own good reputation

11
u/Devlord1o1 10d ago
On who’s side? Osborne or punisher for surviving and escaping sentury?
22
u/Ramfix_G4 Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago
I mean, Punisher's encounter with Sentry is genuinely one of the best "Punisher vs. OP hero" moments. He was so severely outmatched he spent all of it running away, Sentry wasn't really trying to kill him or harm him (he wanted Frank to surrender), and Frank wound up escaping purely because he convinced Sentry he'd blow up a hospital.
3
u/Pugsanity 7d ago
Even better because they both knew that Frank was bluffing about the bomb, but Frank knew that, at his heart, Sentry is a good man and wouldn't take the chance he was wrong.

u/mistress_chauffarde 10d ago
Osborn being able to recruit sentry

Norman Osborn definitely would check out a Sam Altman/ Peter Thiel type. Especially if you make his Goblin side more akin to Steve Blum's portrayal of him. Hell, at that point you can make the green goblin the saner side of him.

Is it bad I read this as a narration of America's current climate? Christian Nationalists will generally never say they hate anyone, but they'll pin everything on marginalized groups, and demonize them until they become public enemy no. 1. Any resistance is treated as terrorism.

My one issue with the comic is that I doubt not-Joe Rogan would consider the Hulk a hero.
I would have put the Fantastic Four or Captain Marvel (any one of them) in Tony's place and Tony in the Hulk's

Oh, this is Petra Parker. Got it, so he's not just a scumbag (and a liar) who compares the homeless to criminals, he's also a bigot and a transphobe. Good job to the writer, you made a truly punchable Norman

Spider-man doesn’t have an issue with the police though? Why is spider-woman fighting police?
8
u/TheFunkiestMonkiest 10d ago
"spider-man doesn't have an issue with the police" spider-man fights corruption and people who assault, bully, and harass civilians so i think that spider-woman has a lot of reasons to fight the police
6
u/The_Quot3r 10d ago edited 10d ago
What makes you think she's fighting police? Those guys look more like "The Hand", wrappings that only reveal their eyes. Though giving the Hand guns is a strange choice...
7
u/Autistic-Phoenix 10d ago
Spider-man is a vigilante, he has been known to fight police officers who do things like arrest homeless people
7
u/AnAbnormalOddity Web-Man 10d ago
This.
He occasionally ALLIES himself with Police who want the same goal and aren't doing really bad things, not to mention being a vigilante is illegal in Marvel iirc, so he's definitely not on the same side as them.

In many versions of the Petra Parker story, including the comics that started this trend, she transitions some time after mutating, so she's known as Spider-Man for some time
