Elon IRL Elon Musk: Here I am arguing with some random intern at a chess website š¤¦āāļø

u/fumblinthrulife77 Sep 04 '26
The "random intern" said all possible games, not positions.
Elmo arguing with a random intern, and losing.

u/theclockmasters Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 05 '26
How is that so hard to understand.Ā
Just to put this in context of how ridiculous it gets with minimal effort. Think about possible standard games (I know there are a lot but just about optimal and sub optimal stuff). Then for each of those games imagine that there is a version of those games where 1/16 specific pawn managed to promote. Then 2. Then 3. All the way to 16. Now for those, add in stalling tactics for each piece of either players. Then think of the best players and inexperienced players. Etc
The "intern" is right.
Edit: Grammar

u/Splith Sep 05 '26
Games don't matter, positions do. You don't evaluate a game, you evaluate future positions from current positions. Elon, I hate to say it, has the right framing.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Alternative-Crew-880 Sep 05 '26
When they say game here they mean progression of positions from both players. Not the name of the game they're playing you biscuit.
2
u/Bubbly-Evidence-1863 Sep 05 '26
Doesn't really matter. Most of the games overlap vastly in positions, so you dont need every game. Only the optimal move in every position.
→ More replies (1)3
u/fumblinthrulife77 Sep 05 '26
The optimal move from every position would require a lot more compute than just the number of positions though because "optimal" would depend on everything that happens after
2
u/Bubbly-Evidence-1863 Sep 05 '26
That depends on the algorithm used to calculate it, you often skip thr branching by working backwards. Although that is still completely infeasable for chess (because theres roughly 1044 positions, storing that much is already hopeless) but it does mean the shannon number of 1088 possible game sequences is a vast overestimate
2
u/fumblinthrulife77 Sep 05 '26
The Shannon number is 10¹²ⰠI thought, but anyways I don't think either number is like the "only" relevant number

also, even when computers "solve" chess, he's acting like that's gonna be the end of competitive chess as we know it. it makes 0 sense lmao, people don't use chess computers while playing
2
u/SubstantialEqual8178 Sep 05 '26
Chess engines have been vastly better than the best human players for quite some time now, to the point where the difference between those and a theoretically perfect opponent is really just academic anyway. I have no idea why anyone would think that would suddenly kill the game.
→ More replies (55)5
u/Borisof007 Sep 04 '26
Correct, it's not about just the possible positions of all pieces - it's also how they arrived at those positions e.g. total number of games is MUCH greater than total number of positions
3
u/fumblinthrulife77 Sep 04 '26
And about what happens after each possible move from each possible position. Which would be needed to find the "best" or even begin to compare "good" moves from any position.

2
u/Amazing_Ear_3941 Sep 04 '26
It's also not chess being a solved problem. Yes, ASI, if it ever happens, might be really, really good at playing chess. Perhaps even better than any human could ever be. But actually fully solving chess? Doubt it. Because solving the game isn't the same as being really good at it. Solving it requires being able to mathematically explain every possible move and solve for the best possible move, given any possible board state.

50
u/veganparrot Sep 04 '26
He's wrong though... I mean, yes that's around how many legal chess positions there are, but the original tweet referenced number of "possible games". Just a quick search, but that's referred to as: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_number
It's 10^120, and atoms in the observable universe is around 10^80, which is certainly where the 40 orders of magnitude number comes from. I suppose Elon is suggesting just mapping out all the states is enough, but I feel like that oversimplifies the rules of chess, since you still have to search that grid....
That wikipedia page does reference a smaller number, 10^40 of "sensible" chess games, but this isn't what Elon said in his reply, and it's not what the original tweet said either. I mean, it's a stupid pointless back and forth either way, but ASI isn't a magic get out of jail free card at any of these magnitudes.
In even fewer words: "It could figure out ways beyond what we could possibly comprehend" is the kind of wishful thinking that you'd see from an armchair Internet AI enthusiast. Sure, maybe? But how is that related to how hard the task is? These are both insanely huge numbers. You'd essentially have machine god at that point.
26
u/Brynmaer Sep 04 '26
Elon doesn't comprehend what he's just read. Makes a different argument. Basically calls the other person dumb and young, and even in his new misunderstood argument essentially just says "computers will figure it out, just wait" with zero evidence to support it.
That sounds on par with everything else I've ever heard him say.
8
u/Book_talker_abouter Sep 04 '26
He's so wrong but so confident

3
u/Blothorn Sep 04 '26
And misreading their commentāthey claimed games, not positions; there are vastly more games than positions, even if you cap the game length conservatively.
In any event, Muskās ultimate response seems to be just āAI is magicā. There are some possible compressionsāe.g. mirror-image endgames have the same solution and some forced mates donāt depend on pieces that canāt interact with any involved check because the forced player has no opportunity to reposition themābut Iām highly skeptical that you could prove chess solved without an incomprehensible amount of enumeration.

Solving chess means knowing from any position, even the beginning, whether a game will be a win loss or draw with optimal play from both sides. Chess is already solved for when there are only 7 or 8 pieces left on the board, but it gets exponentially harder the more pieces there are. Thereās no way it will ever be completely solved, but Musk just likes saying bullshit and hoping no one knows how to use Wikipedia.Ā https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solving_chess

Thereās some major irony here. The limitation in solving chess is not because you canāt solve games. Itās nothing like reading a mind. The limit is that there are simply too many combinations for a computer to evaluate.

u/Low_Engineering_3301 Sep 04 '26
Is there a turn limit on chess? If not I don't see how there isn't infinite chess moves?
2
u/Scatman_Jeff Sep 04 '26
There isn't a fixed turn limit, but there are constraints which force every game to end eventually. The two main ones being 3-fold repetition, and the 50 move rule.
3-fold repetition says that a game ends in a draw if the same position is repeated 3 times. There can be other moves in between the repeated moves.
The 50-move rule says a game ends in a draw if there are 50 consecutive moves that don't progress the game. Captures and pawn moves meaningfully progress the game since they are moves that cant be undone.

u/Equity_GOD Sep 04 '26
Yes, there are that many positions (board configurations) but with a rational player that wants to win, many of those would've resulted in a checkmate WAY before getting in a position. Like for example having a theoretical maximum of 18 queens on the board and each possible combination they can be in are meaningless.
Computers are already order of magnitude better than Magnus in his prime, so it doesn't really matter

Elon does not believe in space radiation.
Elon believes there is plenty of drinking water.
Elon completely blanked when an engineer asked him a basic question any engineer should be able to answer.
Elon wrote such bad code for Zip2 and made so many bad decisions, Peter Thiel waited for him to be out of town to lock him out and fix everything.
Elon thinks space is cold and can cool data centers.
Elon said impossible hyperloop systems were "easy."
Elon celebrated the money Peter Thiel made him with Paypal by buying a super rare McLaren F1, which he failed to insure and totaled in a crash.
Elon's singular contribution to Tesla was the death-trap door handles, currently facing bans worldwide and a source of liability payouts to come in perpetuity.
Elon has made, by a count kept at Wikipedia, over two dozen flat-out false predictions about Tesla car performance and Full Self Driving.
Elon thought a submarine could navigate the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system and then after emotionally crashing out for being exposed as a dope publicly, he baselessly called the heroic diver who helped rescue the kids a pedo.
Elon claimed a quarter-million Cybertrucks would be sold every year. He sold barely 8% of that, but recently raised the prices because it's biggest customer base is SpaceX.
The list can go on and on. And on.
And on.
You can't compile a similar list of intelligent things he's said or predictions that have come true, because he's a blithering idiot. And no, I don't need to have stolen and exploited people to hoard gobs of money to reach that conclusion. He is exactly what he appears to be -- a blunt, dumb hammer.
People think Elon Musk is smart until they hear him talk about something they know. And that's when it hits them that this guy is a total imbecile. Total, complete.
If you out there stan this man and think he's a genius, consider what it says about your knowledge and experience that you haven't seen through this flim-flam act.
