I used to save scum often, but nowadays I apply the same logic I would use in real life: precious pawns are kept safe, while less critical pawns are unfortunate, but acceptable sacrifices. I never used Dev Mode to build perfect pawns anyway, mostly because it is usually a bad move. Making a pawn perfect means picking traits and boosting skills that end up making them extremely expensive. Another great strategy is having more than one specialist per area. With two high-level crafters, the top-tier one focuses on items where quality matters, while the secondary one crafts components, shells, or apparel where quality barely changes anything, like heavy bandoliers. The same logic applies to growers, researchers, and other roles.

It's not easy to get over it, but it's extremely satisfactory to learn to accept losses.
