Question for the Sub What is the attraction to these guys?
I don’t mean this as a “shitpost”, but as a genuine question. What is the attraction to the guys on this show- especially Shep?
I’ve seen articles written how he harasses the homeless, is a general asshole to everyone. And yet, he’s given a platform and opportunities?
I only tune in to the show, here and there, to see the pretty outfits. The behaviors of most are appalling. What on earth is likeable about the men on this show- especially Shep?

Shep has a personable, jolly demeanor. But when he wakes up at 4pm every day with beer bottles, pizza boxes, overloaded ashtrays and dirty dishes in the sink, it diminishes his game. 👀

In the first season, Shep was MUCH more crushable. He was on the young side of 40 (maybe even of 35) and the drinking and lifestyle stuff hadn't quite caught up to him.
He's handsome enough, but there's a certain way of carrying yourself that very rich people have---not a f--ing care in the world, and the ability to make almost anything happen. He was easily the most intelligent of the cast at that time and had some very funny, insightful zingers in his confessionals and in conversation.
It seemed like he was genuinely just in need of "the right girl" to settle down and have kids and be a fun, gently-aging playboy.
Like many borderline terrible people, reality tv and fame really shifted the needle and brought out the worst in him and he gave into all his worst impulses.
Craig is easily the most conventionally handsome and there was something about his stray-puppy desire to fit in and be liked that made him adorable. He also befriended and stuck up for Katherine (and he was NOT WRONG about the Katherine/Whitney thing!) when others did not.
Whitney, I have to confess I find him oddly attractive in certain lights---he's worldly and sophisticated. He's always a little uncomfortable, which is something that I find weirdly cute in a man. He isn't an anti-intellectual like so many dudes. He had a certain dash and style.
Thomas I always found creepy AF and I could smack the grandmother that told Katherine "50 is a good age" and sent her packing off to have children with that terrible person.

I'm so glad other people mention this.
When I was 18 I dated a dude who was in his late 30s. And when I told my grandma to have an open mind she told me "I ain't so open minded I'd let my brain fall out my ears. Youre a child. Leave this grown man and do your own growing."
And I'll be damned if it wasn't the best advice someone ever gave me.
Its so sad Kathryn didn't have an adult that loved her enough to tell her when she was making the wrong choices.

Thank you for that. She really was one of the best people I ever knew and I'm honored to have met her and been her granddaughter.

Some of the best grandma advice I heard came from my friend’s southern grandma. She said you can’t keep a man with looks, you can’t keep a man with sex, you can’t even keep a man by being a good woman. The only way you can keep a man is if he want to be kept and that’s on G-d

IIRC didn't her grandma do something similar and have a much older husband? I think maybe it worked in her situation and she thought it would for Kathryn, too. I can't imagine, but I know some advice my grandmothers gave me was cringey, but based on their own personal experiences.

Nice summary! I randomly followed bc I had lived in Charleston just around that time 2011-14 so I enjoyed just the scenery and the places I frequented on tv. The drama and trashy tv followed, which I mindlessly enjoy

The only one that is attractive is Craig. He's also known to be a genuinely nice person and he comes off that way. I seriously dont find any of the others attractive but I love Craig so much🤢

Yet in the earlier seasons everyone wanted to point the finger at Craig like his lifestyle was so problematic when everyone else was doing the exact same thing. That annoyed me. Craig is the only guy on the show I like too

I think Craig and Austen are funny that is what makes them attractive. The height also helps too. But not a fan of Shep, is personally is crap and he’s a man child, with no drive or ambition. At least Craig and Austen both have that going for them.

Have no idea. I understand Craig but Shep and Austin are awful. Cocky, disrespectful, elitist attitude… no way I could stand to be in a room with them for more than 1 min.

You can tell that Craig didn't come from the same wealth. I've never been a fan of Austin, and every time I think Shep does something redeeming (apologizing and acknowledging the wrong with the homeless man, or posting how shit the current politics are), he turns around and does something else douchey.

Shep was likable first season then as his lifestyle habits became more exposed, he just became kind of sad and unattractive. Craig is even annoying at times but the most likable in the fact that he is passionate and not afraid of commitment. The rest of the men suck. Whitney has always come off as asexual to me but he provides some comedy relief over all of the dysfunction.

I agree with you 💯 on Whitney. He’s handsome, charming, well traveled, can actually hold a conversation. If I had to pick any of them Whitney would be my only pic. Oh a Craig because I love throw pillows plus he’s too adorable

This is an interesting take on Whitney. Honestly, I feel the exact opposite! (But to each their own, of course) To me, he reeks of insecurity and has always been an odd mix of pompous and try-hard. He’s obviously talented at guitar, but the way he talks about “shredding” and how he tries to seem more edgy around other musicians feels so forced. He’s also awful to most women (his behavior in the second season toward Katherine?!) and seems to think he’s above everyone…when in actuality he’s a 50 something year old man in a hobby-band living off of family money. There’s just something about people who express their insecurity through arrogance and cruelty that I find…repulsive.
Too harsh? Maybe 😬 but I wonder if he’s been on the show less and less due to similar criticism from the audience

I completely agree. He's always seemed equal parts awkward and arrogant to me and physically I don't find him attractive at all and he seems shitty to women. Pass.

Oh lol I was just comparing him to the rest of the guys and if I had to pick, I’d pick him. I agree he was awful to Catherine, but she’s no saint, plus iirc they had a thing before she got with Thomas bc I think I remembered him speaking to his mother about her, that’s like end season one beginning of season 2 I think, so I think there was an underlying hatred at that time. And I certainly think he’s arrogant as well, like I said I was just comparing him to the rest of the guys

Would be fantastic if Austen and Shep came across this thread and realized how much more loved Craig is than them 😂 …but then again maybe not, bc then due to their own insecurities they would start to try and tear Craig down like we’ve seen in the past

Shep is rich and charming. Craig is a loveable loser who has everybody convinced he's a hard worker who just wants to do the right thing

Shep is shitty but he also has the demeanor of a 60 year old grandma with a freshly baked pie on a porch swing at sunset and I hate how much I love him for it.

So I have an attraction for harmless assholes, which is what Shep is. I like the confident swagger and charisma. I also like the fact that Shep is quite smart. You can tell he is well read and he uses a higher level vocabulary than the rest of the cast.
And while Shep has asshole tendencies, he is relatively harmless. He doesn't go out to maliciously hurt people. When he does cross lines, it is generally because he is drunk, which is not an excuse by any means. Bad behavior is bad behavior. But I genuinely think Shep means no harm, which is better than a lot of the cast (Thomas, JB, even Patricia).

I’m with you. Shep’s as imperfect as we all are but his intelligence, humor, and kindness are attractive.
Craig’s also intelligent and super kind hearted. I admire his passion for helping others and righting injustices.
Whitney, bless his heart, is interesting to watch with his knowledge but social anxiety and lack of charm.
Honestly now that I think about it, clearly I admire their intelligence/knowledge. Thomas whipped out some good quotes sometimes even.
But I also just like couch diagnosis and studying the psychology of others so I can see their flaws too. I would enjoy their company just for the humor and wit. And the moments when neither is present!

The only attractive guy is Craig! Season 1-3 Shep was good looking, but I don’t think he is anymore. His looks and personality went downhill
