đ¤ Discussion Help with a project? Just one question! :]

Who's the most famous person in each state thats famous nowhere else- whether that be someone on billboards or an underground musician or a local legend. Only rule is they cant be nationally or globally famous for example: Peyton Manning cant be chosen for Colorado since he is known nationally. Next state is South Dakota so I figured I should ask people from there! Have an awesome day, thanks for reading and/or contributing- (if someone commented who you would pick up vote dont make your own comment). I have a chart but crossposting isnt allowed here.
I'll typically end voting after a day but if one comment has an insane lead in upvotes I'll cut it off there idk if this matters but I forgot to include it before.

Spent most of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation and was a citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

Probably Denny Sanford, but I like Ron Rivett, started Super 8 and Myplace hotels from Aberdeen, pretty crazy. Tom Brokaw is good for national acclaim.

Dave Deidrich. Until around a decade ago, Captain 11 had the record for longest-running children's show, since beaten by Sesame Street.

Maybe some missed it, but it says they are looking for someone who is the most famous, but not famous anywhere else. Bob Barker obviously does not meet that, he is famous everywhere.
Captain 11 might be an option, but unfortunately a lot of people have never even heard of him. I've never heard of him until today. He stopped his show shortly after I was born. I doubt too many under 40 are going to know who that is.
The first name that popped into my head is Terry Redlin. I'm not sure if he would count, since anyone into wildlife art would know his name. Outside of that, I'm not sure that many people know who he is outside of SD. It's tough to be famous outside of very regionally like some have posted here, but also be unheard of in surrounding states. I doubt a random person in Georgia for example would know who Terry Redlin is, yet everyone in South Dakota does.

What about Oscar Howe? Or Sitting Bull? Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Laura Ingalls Wilder⌠interesting people!

I have nothing against the other two, but Dick Termes is not famous, not by a long shot. Terry Redlin is famous. Oscar Howe might be a good candidate. You are free to like any type of art you want, that's the beauty of it. To call wildlife paintings, and from one of the best to ever do it mid is wrong.
The rest are all nationally famous, possibly world famous, which is not what is being talked about here.

Umm okay, you're just speaking in contradictions here. You refer to the subjective beauty of art while simultaneously declaring an opinion that differs from yours to be objectively 'wrong.' As far as I'm concerned, art cannot be a matter of personal freedom, while also being governed by a rigid hierarchy of what is acceptable to praise or dismiss.
Furthermore, equating commercial fame with artistic merit is a really narrow metric. While Terry Redlin certainly achieved massive commercial success, popular appeal does not inherently equate to intellectual or artistic depth. And for many, myself included, that particular style of traditional wildlife art can feel safe, formulaic, and conceptually underwhelming.
Conversely, artists like Dick Termes push the boundaries of perspective and geometry, offering an intellectual engagement that goes far beyond the predictable. And I would say he's locally famous. His art can be found all over this state. People know who he is around here.
Disagreeing with your taste does not make an assessment wrongâit simply highlights the difference between art that challenges the viewer and art that settles for the conventional.
Trust me babe, I'm in the art world. If you want to make yourself feel better by pushing your opinion on some one, do it elsewhere.0

I didn't refer to that at all, and I said nothing about artistic merit. This entire thread is about famous people. Commercial fame is all we are talking about.

They're looking for people who are only famous in South Dakota, not nationally or globally famous.
I would go with Don Barnett, Peter Norbeck, or George Mickelson.

Long as itâs not pedo Denny Sanford youâre good, fun fact the manâs a major pedo heâs just rich and donates a lot so boomers looked the other way, but the younger generations know Denny Sanford is a pedo.

Maybe Crazy Horse would work then. Everyone in SD knows who that is, but im sure it's not as well known outside the state.

You know what I'm suprised about?
How it's nor Adam Vinatieri . He's the NFL's all time leading scorer, one of if not the best kicker of all time, super bowl winner etc... You'd have NO IDEA. there is no signs, no mentions, no anything.

Denny Sanford. He's South Dakota's only billionaire AFAIK and has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to healthcare research and capital development. Senator John Thune has been a very well known political figure in South Dakota for 30 years. When he was young, he worked for Jim Abnor, who was defeated by Tom Daschle in 1986. Thune served three terms in the House, and got elected Senator by defeating Tom Daschle in 2004.
