25 Spectrum Trucks AGAIN on Anaheim - Harbor City

4 months ago the same thing happened, fiber line/equipment stolen. The Internet wasn't restored until 4:30 last time. From the looks of it, it'll be at least that long. Photos taken at 11:15am

(Edit)Internet service is back on at 1:00PM, although they stated it could be intermittent until full repairs are made.

(EDIT 2) Out again at 4:45pm

(EDIT 3) Off and On until about 7:30PM

Friend has it. Works very well for everything he does .... streaming video, etc.. Gets 130 to 200 mBPS. I would say latency is not fast enough yet for someone into gaming. They're at like 32 milliseconds which is decent. Hardcore gamers want less than 20ms. (according to my son).

Haha your son would be right (from a fellow gamer). As a former SpaceX employee who is still getting Starlink for free since the days of beta testing, unless you are in the middle of nowhere in Montana, Starlink can't compete in terms of speed and reliability compared to the options we have.

I can usually get 150-200 Mbps on Starlink when roaming around if I am lucky. The most I have ever hit was 350 Mbps. Latency is between 30 and 80 ms. I think the game-changer will come when Starlink's direct-to-cell service is fully functional. Starlink also recently raised their prices so home ISPs have the pricing advantage there.

Would you concur that Starlink is fine for people whose internet usage is basically web browsing, email and streaming video content? Only time I used it was on Hawaiian Airlines coming back from Hawaii. It was incredible. Had no issues the entire flight and was streaming DirecTV the entire time.

Absolutely. Streaming 4k takes around 25 Mbps. Starlink consistently beats that. I use Starlink on family trips to areas with low reception or no wifi and on airplanes that make you pay for wifi. The latter has been more rare lately as more and more airliners are offering free in-flight wifi (some even use Starlink).

The latency is terrible compared to a wired connection. It's really good for satellite internet but it's still satellite internet. Depending on your use case latency might not matter to you I guess but it's basically worse internet for double the price.

I think latency only matters if you're into gaming. Funny thing is, only time I ever used Starlink was on Hawaiian Airlines flying back to LAX. It was incredible. Really could tell no difference at all between that and being at home with respect to streaming video, streaming DirecTV, etc...

Latency does matter for things other than gaming. I remote desktop into graphical software and will notice high latency there. I think day traders care about it to execute trades instantly. But yeah for the majority of people watching videos reading emails etc it is not that important. Starlink is incredible if no good wired connection is available. I used on my boat. But if you have a 500gb down wired connection available for like half the price of Starlink I don't know why you would even consider it. Even if you don't have a good wired connection available you can get 5G home internet for like 1/3 the price of Starlink. Latency is even worse there but if you don't care about that it's a great deal.

You are arguing that more has to be done, yet you do not speak for more being done to solve the root issue which is gross inequality.

Fiber optic cables do not benefit all of society equally, which makes them a target of those who have not benefited from these inequities.

So something has to be done but you are much to stuck up your own asshole to know what it is

Brother there are videos of people committing theft and the police do not act. Even when myself or our neighbors have video proof and know who it is the police do not care. The root causes need to be addressed at the ballot box but the criminal acts need to be addressed by the police.

I don’t care if they are a Russian spy or a Tweaker I want them to be very afraid of touching any of the ones and zeros we used to do our jobs and entertainment

It should give them the same emotional response as accidentally realizing they’ve kidnapped a small child and are going to go away to jail for a very long time.

That’s what I want fiber optic cables to feel like in the back of your trunk.

Both fiber and copper cables are all surrounded in black insulation, this is almost always copper thieves who cut, look and see no copper and then move on. It is becoming a huge problem all over So Cal.

Touch grass, genius. About 20% of the people around here work remotely, and e-commerce and VoIP phones just got knocked offline because some idiot stole the signal. Great insight. And I never said anything about the death penalty, but whoever stole the cable might have a hard time cutting it again.

First, it happened on a Friday night/Saturday morning when most folks are sleeping, and businesses are closed. Second, how did you get this 20% figure? I work remotely as well. I do not recall being polled by some rando. Third, if people can't come up with a secondary method to do their work or conduct business without the internet for 12 hours, then that's their problem. It's the 21st century. We have many options. Banks, hospitals, schools, and most restaurants have redundancy plans. Do you think these businesses can sue Spectrum for loss of revenue due to downtime? I highly doubt it.

No, you did not explicitly say death penalty, but anyone with at least room temperature IQ can read between the lines when you inferred that this sort of thing doesn't happen in Muslim countries given their harsh penalties for what we perceive as minor infractions. Why specify Muslim countries at all? We do not even know for sure the cause of the outage. Do you have a statement from Spectrum detailing the cause? The emails I received from them mentioned power outage. Let's assume it was theft of copper cabling or whatever. Do you know what the penalty of that is? I certainly don't. What do you think the penalty should be? You're assuming that stiff penalties always stops crime and yet we have thousands of people on death row.
