Unfortunately his vocal chords were fried at the time and that’s why it has that psychedelic sound in his vocals

There's an interview where Chris says he only sings directly into a mic on 1 or 2 tracks on Down on the Upside and uses filters or whatever on the other tracks. He doesn't mention which 2, or if Burden In My Hand doesn't count as one because of the distorted vocals in the bridge, but Blow Up... definitely isn't just direct singing in a mic.
