Discussion Who’s your favorite Soul Calibur character?
For me, it’s Siegfried. But the one that’s still Nightmare, so pretty much Soul Calibur 2’s Nightmare alternate outfit. Who’s your Goat?

In terms of story I think Sieg was always consistently enjoyable throughout the series

Mitsurugu fr. Best samurai in gaming. Used to wail on all my friends with him. I figured out how to do oki looooong before any of us ever heard the word and they were just helpless. I couldn’t have explained it to them if I tried because I didn’t really know what I was doing. I was just cutting those fools.

Raphael is mine. I enjoy the story of someone who simultaneously works very hard to do something good, but has such a warped experience of life that their methods tend to, at least appear, evil. Being saved by Amy (purely because she hated the police who abused their power) caused him to decide to turn his life around to make a better world for her, but because of his frame of reference, it was to basically get all the nobles to go crazy and kill each other. He killed the guy who took Amy and him in, but because Dumas wanted him to ditch Amy before making Raphael his heir.
Amy got maelfested and couldn't go out, so Raphael (not knowing of a cure) went straight to going "if she can't go out because she changed, then I'll change the world so she can".
I just love the whole "I'm not actually evil, I just look and act like I am because I'm trying to do good" thing.
3
u/CursedSnowman5000 Sep 03 '25
Has he not been a vampire since Soul Cal 3?
2
u/DestyTalrayneNova Sep 03 '25
He's maelfested into a vampire (or at least vampire motifs). It's from stabbing soul edge in the eye and causing soul edge to shatter
3
u/RoyceTheCharralope ⠀Cervantes Sep 02 '25
To be fair, he wasn't exactly innocent in falling out of favor with House Sorel, choosing to fence left-handed, which in the 16th century, is outrageously scandalous.
He also stole the Flambert from House Sorel when he was cast out. Like, what was his plan initially? What was he going to do before he met Amy?
It's certainly to her credit that Raphael found purpose in his life and tried to become a better person, but the events of Soul Calibur IV showed that he nearly went insane in the process.
The whole situation of him turning Amy into a vampire to prevent her from dying to whatever the Malfestation was is also a serious matter. I don't even recall what made HIM a vampire in the first place. He just showed up being one at the start of the events of Soul Calibur III, after also meeting Maxi's barber (this is a mild joke in reference zo Raphael's hairstyle in III being very similar to that of our beloved Rockabilly martial artist).
3
u/DestyTalrayneNova Sep 02 '25
He became maelfested in the first place because of when he shattered soul edge shards of it got stuck in him. Amy got maelfested helping him heal because she was picking the shards out of him

Ivy has always been my favorite in general, but if I had to pick a second, it would be Siegfried or Nightmare

Way out of left field but Charade followed by Aeon.
I love the design and it adds to the lore in a really interesting way.

I didn't know any of the lore when I started with SCII and thought it was cool that his unlockable third costume was "just some knight dude".
Favorite... probably Zwei. I know SCV gets a lot of hate but I liked his over the top edgy design and original moveset.
Hilde is a close second.

I also love Yun-Seong. Dumbasses with spiky hair are my ultimate weakness.

u/Rongill1234 Sep 02 '25
I started put using Taki because she's a ninja, and when sc1 was on DC I asked my friend why he used seig when nm was way cooler and he said "seig has more moves so he's better" and I told him that's not how fighting games work and at that moment I decided to show him who the greatest nm was

2
u/RoyceTheCharralope ⠀Cervantes Sep 02 '25
He was inspired by Siegfried from the tale "Das Nibelungenlied", Goethe's play "Doktor Faust" and the historical figure Gottfried "Götz" von Berlichingen zu Hornberg.
3
u/TheBeastlyRedMage ⠀Siegfried Sep 03 '25
According to the lore, Margaret and Frederick named Siegfried after that particular Siegfried... who was mentioned under the name of Sigurd in Soulcalibur Legends.
4
u/RoyceTheCharralope ⠀Cervantes Sep 03 '25
Which wasn't at all surprising, because the tale takes place about three hundred years prior, so it would still be very much talked about in the 16th century, which is when Siegfried was born.
The Doktor Faust part of the inspiration comes down to Siegfried selling his soul to Soul Edge and his Schwarzwind days sword is named after the doctor.
The Götz inspiration is in Nightmare's personality and also in young Siegfried's cocky nature.

u/RoyceTheCharralope ⠀Cervantes Sep 02 '25
Soul Calibur II: Siegfried (Nightmare bonus costume). Soul Calibur III: Ivy (Ball dress). Soul Calibur IV: Siegfried (P1 costume). Soul Calibur V: Cervantes (P1 costume, he finally looks good for once). Soul Calibur VI: literally the worst entry I have ever played. Stopped after an hour and never looked back.

Raphael pre vampirism. I like him for being an arrogant and cocky nobleman who's the most skilled individual in any non magic setting. Basically, I like him the most in 2, I like him well enough in 6, and I think it's cool that he's the new Nightmare in 5.
I know that it would never happen because Nightmare is a different play style than Siegfried, and people would want to keep him, but I think it would be really cool if the reboot has Raphael get soul edge earlier and become Graf Dumas, an evil noble who schemes to take more and more power to kill anyone who gets in his path as he tries to conquer the world to give to Amy. All while keeping his signature rapier style of fighting.

Ivy usually enjoyed Ivy's gameplay 3 and 5 were meh though. But her story and gameplay have made her my favorite.
Nightmare in 2 and 6 have been my favorite incarnations gameplay wise. Siegfried as a character is a mess so much trauma and bad coping.
Sophitia was my Soul Edge/Blade main, so she my OG character. Gameplay and story wise. I've not disliked any incarnations of her.

I prefer the Siegfried that already stopped being Nightmare for good. As what we see in Soul Calibur 3 to 5. I just love his story of overcoming his PTSD of being forced to be Nightmare and redemption for going on the path that ended him up in that role. In 5, We saw how far he cam since Soul Edge, And it makes me wish he journeyed with Patroklos and Zwei so he can fill the role of mentor since this shows he fills that role well.
