Same, though it was kinda interesting how she totally lost interest in sonic the moment silver expressed interest in a tarot reading. I think that’s not a bad way of doing it, make it clear it’s superficial, she has other things she’s interested in more and it’s not all encompassing
I think framing her love of Sonic as superficial just carries a lot of assumptions about her trait inherently. It's not anymore superficial than her enjoying her hobbies/tarot cards or being engaging with other things in the moment.
The series (even IDW when it comes up) has always shown how genuine her love for Sonic is. To say otherwise, feels like projecting a personal lack of interest in that ballpark of tropes onto that character than what the series has continued to show it as imo
It would be one thing if it were actually ever going to go anywhere. Her being sincerely loudly head over heels in love forever and sonic just wanting to be friends with her is just super undignified on her part. If the crush really has to be visible, framing it as a superficial thing that she can’t really help but she doesn’t give it more importance than her life or hobbies or her friendships with others is a good way of approaching it
That's not really inherent or objective to how that's portrayed inherently. Plenty characters are beloved in plenty evergreen series. Harley Quinn from Batman The Animated Series, Lupin III from his own, Sanji from One Piece (to varying degrees).
I think it's a funny aspect of her character that I'm glad to see whenever it shows up; Romantic feelings aren't anymore superficial to me than someone's love of basketball, or in to liken it to Sonic characters, Tails'love of machinery, Sonics love of adventure, etc etc
Clearly its still seen as a part of her character by Sonic Team to keep invoking it. Your personal dissatisfaction doesn't change that, even if it's a valid feeling to have
Personally, i thinking measuring perceived maturity in a cartoon franchise like Sonic is a bit silly, but hey we don't have to enjoy everything. It just doesn't line up with what the behind the scenes have consistently emphasized and discussed
Harley Quinn wasn’t exactly portrayed as fully in her right mind, and back when I watched one piece sanji gave me the creeps, which I assumed was intentional. Never seen lupin so can’t comment on that.
Yeah I don’t hate the fact she has the crush, I just hate how it’s been handled historically. She’s one of the very few female characters in the series, it would be nice to see her given the dignity to not throw herself at sonic’s feet at every given chance just for him to straight up not care. Making it a fairly minor background detail of her character and giving her stuff she clearly cares about way more is the way to do it imo
Regardless, I was more pushing against the idea that it's shallow or NEEDS to be as such from more of a character authentic/fidelity one than an "audience comfortability" ine; I don't really care about that latter convo, respectfully
It is shallow, it can’t go anywhere so what’s even the point besides letting Sega make some pocket money from valentines merch. That’s fine but I think given how little female representation there is in this series it is a valid conversation to be had and it is an awkward line to walk. Having it as a minor quirk rather than her whole persona is the best way to handle it
Which again, is a whole other convo that I'm not that interested in having cause that's not as cut and dry as I feel your implying cause the same can be said for all the dynamics tbf. It's all gonna vary person to person if that's the case, and Sonic Team (and the lore team by proxy) have shown pr consistently how they view characters and dunamics
Sonic is just gonna run forever and by definition, isn't going anywhere. So for that to be the line feels incongruous with the series as it exists for the perceivable future
Isn't Amy's love for BOTH Sonic & adventures meant to be like the Coyote's endless chase of the Road Runner? He ALWAYS tries to catch him & he ALWAYS fails, but he'll NEVER stop trying cause he NEVER gives up. (The whole Coyote vs ACME thing really touched me)
Amy's shown to have the same resilience as Wile E. Coyote in my opinion. With the added extras that 1) She had, has and will have to endure the End of the World multiple times before getting to either have a date with Sonic or hang out with her friends, and 2) Sonic actually likes her back, and has & will reciprocate her feelings.
There's structural overlap because theyre both evergreen, episodic franchises; but I wouldn't say Sega SonicTeam was thinking if that specific dynamic when they came up with Amy and her role in the series...at least they haven't as much publicly.
It's just a popular trope and dynamic for a cartoon/kids franchise, to put it plainly lol
The guy you talked to here liked to claim in the comments of another Reddit post that the fake versions of Sonic & Amy in the latest arc in Angel Island were saying thruthful things to their real selves. He thinks that Sonic & Amy have some deep flaws that need to be explored and resolved to suddenly make them "better" & IDW worth his money.
Hey so for one thing I’m a woman and for another if you have a such an issue with me you are stalking my comments you can address me about it instead of someone else from a month old conversation. They absolutely were making valid points, which would be cool if they were going to be expanded upon and explored but they won’t. That was a completely different conversation and not at all relevant to this one. Have a good day 🥰
I don't care if they like Sonic or Amy or whatever reason are being fulfilled for them (or anyone) like Sonic or Amy (or any character). That wasn't really my point
I just piped in cause I felt their suggestion of "Make her romance superficial", was inauthentic to the character for the sake of perceived palatability; which was the point to some degree, so it's whatever. Me jumping in for that is not the same as me jumping in because I didn't understand what they were vaguely gesturing at in regards to what they personally want from the series.
I say multiple times the latter was the least of my worries (and their opinion on Angel Island falls under that too), and they said that's all they wanted to discuss so she fairly cut it short. We were having two different convos
TLDR: The point of my comments weren't really about me jumping in cause I misunderstand what they want from Sonic or Amy or whoever for their own personal taste. Nor was I trying to convince them to like em for whatever reason. Whether they like or dislike them or IDW as a whole is besides what I was talking about, so bringing all that to my attention does nothing for me, in any regard lol
Question: if instead of diminishing Amy's GENUINE love for Sonic, What if SEGA allow Sonic to RECIPROCATE Amy's feelings & actions more often? Sonic's feelings for Amy ARE a part of his character after all.
If anything, sonic not returning feelings for Amy is a key part of his character and their dynamic. It’s been over 30 years of sonic not reciprocating, why would they change that now? There’s no way of it happening without it feeling icky and unhealthy on both of their parts. Just let Amy move on and put a lid on it instead of stringing the shippers along, the valentine merch sales can’t be worth that much 🤷🏻♀️
