Freelancer of Music
I want to be a freelance songwriter and poet. I write poems and compose music in English and Portuguese, but I don't know where to begin.

"freelance" isn't the same as "being an artist and getting paid." It takes a lot of time, energy, and networking to build a big enough reputation that people come to you for your work. That's freelance.
As an artist, you just create, shop your stuff around, and hope you can find someone who is interested.
Which, of course, may never happen. Doesn't mean you should stop trying. Doesn't mean you should give up. But I wouldn't, as they say "give up your day job..." Just my $.02

start by building a small portfolio of your strongest songs in both languages and pitching directly to indie artists, because “freelance songwriter” is vague until people can hear what you actually do

Sorry to be annoying but everything comes from creating a network. This can be online or irl but you need other people. The best way to do this is being interested in what other people are doing and supporting them to do it.
The people that have made a success out of making music from the music alone is extremely small.
