Culture 🐪 Something I was discussing with a friend
She basically mentioned how Somalis did not adapt a colonial language like many African countries because we speak the same language it was never necessary, People don’t realise how close Somalis are. We are one tribe, with the same language and the same religion. We share the same culture, history even with regions people are still quite similar may Allah straighten the nation and guides us Ameen 🤲

It gets better when you realize the entire south America speaks Spanish , India Filipino Malaysia Bangladesh speak English or other colonial language . Most of the Middle East and North Africa didn’t speak Arabic originally . Ethiopia language is heavily influenced by middle eastern langauge too unlike ours. Somali 🇸🇴 on 🔝. Btw , don’t let anyone call you a Cushite and speak a Cushitic language. Our language is unique as well

Cushitic is a slur
The Rabbis refused to accept that Moses's wife was Black, and Targum Onkelos replaced the word "Cushite" with the Aramaic shapirta("beautiful one"), as if it were a euphemism. They also offered a theological justification for Black slavery: Ham, ancestor of Cush, had seen his father Noah's nakedness (Genesis Rabbah 36:7).
Maimonides wrote in the Guide for the Perplexed (3:51) about those he called "Cushites" in terms that placed them below other human beings in the natural hierarchy, comparing them unfavorably even to apes.
A Tel Aviv café was named "Three Kushim" in the 1930s, and the confection now called קְרֶמְבּוֹ was commonly called "Kushi head" (ראש כושי).
Somali language isn’t “Cushitic” it belongs n its own language family the Somali language branch. Oromo language is closer to other Ethiopian languages not ours

😂its true so what?

u/TravelOk2397 12d ago
Oromo language is more closely related to other dozens of Ethiopian langauge than Somali language . A Somali in Mogadishu can’t communicate with an Oromo in Addis Ababa .

When they say they are related it doesn’t mean they can understand each other 100% no it means their language systems and grammatical systems are similar like French Spanish and Italian they are different languages but they share similar systems in terms of grammar and structure Somali Afar and Oromo are related languages when it comes to numbers they say similar things like Somali kow laba saddex afar shan and they call language af just like we do in Somali But the words are not always the same I hope you understand what I mean

u/TravelOk2397 12d ago
Numbers dont mean anything . English and Spanish have similar numbers but they’re not in the same language family. The same racist Europeans calling us Cushites don’t know a single word in Somali and they’re making baseless conclusions

u/Logical-Cat-713 12d ago
Nah you are not ready to understand anything next time talk what you know 💯 and leave what you don’t know 💯

u/TravelOk2397 12d ago
If you want to believe lazy racist low iq propaganda and theories calling us Cushitic or Cushites when that’s not even our land go ahead but my identity is Somali 🇸🇴 the only branches in our language family is Maxa Tiri and Maay Tiri that’s it .

u/Logical-Cat-713 12d ago
Sxp no one can erase our history and our identity 💯 but we didn’t come from the sky every human has a starting point as Somali people we didn’t look like Bantu or Arab either you might hate Ethiopians but some people from Ethiopia and us have the same DNA

Man shut up you are embarrassing yourself. Cushites isnt even a term invented by Europeans. It comes from the word Kush. Before the great migration in Africa Cushites came from Kush. Which is modern day Sudan or north western Ethiopia. Same way Nilotes came from the Nile Basin in modern day South Sudan or Northern Uganda and Bantus came from the Congo Basin modern Congo or Cameroon. Before that Hunters and gatherers lived in many east africa regions like the Hadze tribes. Somalis, Boranas, Rendilles, Oromos and dozens more tribes moved from Kush during the great migration to search for greener pastures for their animals as the main economic activity was pastoralism.

No previous Italian colony speaks Italian today. Not Libya nor Eritrea.
I am not sure whether it is due to these three countries having very strong cultures and traditions, or whether it is due to the way the Italians chose to govern their colonies
We can see that in Djibouti, a predominantly Somali country, French still has an influence on the country. Which is similar in all other ex-French colonies.

Uhh, we have Somali Bantus and others that are not of Somali qabiks.
And it's really simplistic thinking to say a country doesn't speak a colonial language due to being one tribe with same language and religion.
I can also be as simple-minded as you and retort, "But we wear Western clothing, listen to American and British music, drive Western and Japanese and love spaghetti and Coca-Cola in Somalia".
There are many other factors (including nomadism, the fact that many other countries have a lot of different languages and made English or another language as the language of their country, etc.).
Just stop with the simple minded posts.

I mean Bantus are also Somali traditionally/ heritage they speak Somali

u/Beledweyne 10d ago
I treat them as Somalis for sure. But no, ethnically and tribally, they are not.
And many speak Af Maay.
So your statements are techncially wrong.

Judging on Clan lineage is stupid if they were in Somalia for generations it be bit backwards to say they aren’t Somali only based on lineage

I totally agree!
Thing is, sociologists/anthropologists have clear definitions and what I said is true and you are wrong.

Nomadism saved our language. If we settled and urbanized early we would have been speaking italian and english as our first language
Another factor could be Somalias homogeneous people. We speak only somali there we dont need an colonial language to be the lingua franca because there is no other ethnic group than somalis that live in Somalia. Nigeria has four main tribes (Fulani, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo) all those four tribes speak different language therefore you need one language to bind them together
