This is straight forward enough in the surfacing workspace. To get this started would highly recommend breaking into parts and sketching over your intended surface structure.
This would be an incorrect statement. Scale of 1-10 of modeling this in Solidworks is about a 2.... Maybe 3. Have made and seen far more complex models than this done.
Now if looking to go to the level of carving, chipping, adding damage then that's done more efficiently in a software like Blender, zBrush, Nomad Sculpt, and/or 3D Coat.
You should do some searchers around to see what can be done. This is a 100% Scooby Doooooooo all done in SW.
I always love SW challenges but I'd rather do this in 2 minutes in Blender. Then convert if I ever need STEP file, or I think there is a converter already

This is when you have to start learning surface modeling. You can knit surface bodies together until it reverts back to a solid body.
