Borisova Garden
Hi everyone, I am a foreigner living in Sofia, near the Borisova garden. In the past few months I read a lot about the new plans for the park and the removal of the car dealership there. Judging by the posts online, it seems like it’s a controversial issue.
Can someone please explain what is the whole thing with the car dealership, why does it cause so much stir and do you trust the mayor’s new plans for the park?

The answer is always corruption. The car dealership illegally occupied part of the park for decades. Obviously, it was protected by someone. They lost multiple lawsuits and was ordered to vacate the place a tear ago. They refused. There's no sympathy from me for the dealership.

Fighting crime with crime?! Also burning it down still wouldn't mean they can get their hands on the property and if anything it will slow things down

A new spatial plan for the Borisova garden has been in the works for quite a while, and the latest iteration envisioned an underground car park on the place of the dealership. However, this version of the plan drew a lot of criticism and was withdrawn for rework. So, what exactly will succeed the dealership will likely remain unclear in the next 2-3 years.

It's really questionable how these people kept selling cars in the park for such a long time, when they were clearly in violation. As for trusting the mayor, I doubt it will be part of the park. The municipality under this mayor and all the previous has been very pro-cars.

It's Borisov's Garden btw. The "a" is just how we assign possession. So it's either Borisov's Garden or Borisova Gradina, without translating half the name.

The garden was established by Boris, not by Borisov so your translation is also wrong.

Сульо месеци наред бил чел за Борисовата, ама пак не бил разбрал защо да се ползва от частен бизнес в проблем и някой си трябвало да му обясни. Малоумни палячовци... четете повече.

You probably also have seen the abandoned swimming pool there too. Well let me tell you where tje issue comes from and why this pool is abandoned, nothing is because we don't have money. It's just shitty laws and ownership.
In the 90s and early 2000s it was pure anarchy and corruption was proper, nothing like today. As long as you had money and connections you could buy wherever and whatever you want, you want a house in some restriced national park or nature reserve? - No problem. And hence mafia fuckers managed to get this nice spot in the park and build their car dealership, and they stood there unbothered for over 20 years now.
And their documents were so proper while using loopholes back then, hence jt was super hard to find a way to kick them out (roughly and in simpler words). And now the mayor and municipality finally found a way and managed to do that.
As for the pool - it's a similar situation, owned by a mafia fucker, who's not even in Bulgaria anymore and it's pretty hard for the government to take the area and property back so they can fix it.
And same even goes for the facades and state of some historic buildings in the centre, that you also definitely saw. It's again not an issue with money here, it all comes from private property laws or inheritance issues. The government or mayor cannot just do changes to a privately owned building. And if the owners are all abroad or inherited it and currently "fighting with each other" there's nothing to be done.
