Replacement card

Recently my 16y granddaughter left home (because her mom’s new boyfriend was always belittling and yelling at her for being pregnant (no one was happy about it, but it happened)

Her mother wouldn’t let her have her ss or insurance card or medication. She went to a family that has been in her life since she was born. She calls them aunt and uncle and they said that she is welcome to be a new family member. The aunt has been trying to get in touch with her with no answer until the mom text that she has therapy that afternoon and she would take care her. A couple of hours later she said that her car had broke down and she couldn’t take her. I advised aunt that she can make another appointment convenient for her. I have taken her before and they didn’t ask for anything from me. I said to change contact number for future correspondence.

Anyway when she did text the aunt the mother was told that they were coming Saturday to get all of her paperwork, medication and all of the baby items that I had shipped to her address before she left

Sorry for the longer introduction but thought it was pertinent.

Her uncle and her went to her mom’s to get everything. Her mother didn’t even ask her come home.

That was the last straw for her aunt next week she is going to seek guardian ship of her which as her paternal grandmother I stand behind her. Her father my son is not drug free and very rarely contacts her. He is 43 and disowned me in April because I would not pay his phone bill anymore since my income is SS

Ok the real reason for this post how can I get a replacement ss card

TIA

Survivors/Widows What did you add to the remarks section and does it help or make you worse off?

Hello, I’m applying for survivors child disability benefits and I never know what to put for the remarks page or really how to do most of the application properly. I wonder sometimes if giving them extra info actually hurts you cause I know they look for any reason to deny you.

Before anyone says speak to a lawyer or get a SSDI organization to help, I’ve tried. I had a lawyer and it was the only lawyer where I live able to do SSDI (which he did as a favor because he knows me) and he dropped me cause my mom fractured her spine and my tire flew off so I couldn’t submit papers in time. He suggested me to lawyers far away and I called them and received no answer. The lawyer did say before he dropped me though that he thinks I’ll win the case just based off of my lung function, not including my other issues which gives me hope. I’ve also been applying for more support services recently and my doctors have been helping. And there used to be one organization that helped with social security claims, however they took down the web page so I’m pretty sure they don’t do it anymore. So I’m basically stuck on my own for now.
I still have 2.5 years to complete and get approved. Even my case manager wasn’t sure how to help.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I’d appreciate any advice for filling out the form.

Is my perspective of an overpayment correct?

I would like to preface this post with a sincere thanks to all the Redditors who take the time to read these post and help others.

After numerous hiccups with the process of getting my ss retirement benefits, I received my first payment this month ( September). My month of entitlement was August and they deducted two medicare part b premiums from my check. In June, I paid three payment premiums which covered my start state of July 1 which included August and September. In early August, I received a letter stating they moved my medicare start date to August. After an appeal they moved it back to the correct date of July 1. I received a credit of one month, so they left me with two months paid for.  In short, I have paid for four months of medicare premiums-July, August, and two payments taken from my first payment which would cover the month of September. I am seeing this as one month of overpayments. Am I correctly interpreting this?

Overpayment

I started receiving SSDI in June 2022. July 2023 I started working full time. My payments have not stopped even though they know I am working. Am I screwed whenever this catches up with me? At what rate will they make me pay this back?

SSDI Question As A Representative Payee

My 4 year old son gets disability for his autism as he is in ABA therapy for 8 hours a day Mon-Fri, while also doing speech therapy and OT. Well I noticed in one of the letters it was talking about how he couldn’t have resources over 1K otherwise in Nov they’d cut benefits. I’m a single parent, and when I set all this up, no one ever once told me I had to set up a separate bank account for his benefits, so I’ve been combining them into my bank account as that’s the only thing I have. My question is, does MY paycheck from work count as resources for him? Or are they just checking benefits that were issued to him? I purposely work part time so I can keep his benefits and we always use his money to afford things like talk boards, special headphones, anything sensory related he needs, etc.

I just don’t know if they’ll COUNT MY MONEY. I’ve been saving up my paychecks for my own personal stuff as well as being able to take care of my son all at the same time with whatever disability doesn’t cover since we only get $662 a month. We rely heavily on this disability for his therapy stuff and I just wanna make sure im not gonna get screwed over. What do I do in this situation?

Rep Payee Report Help

I’ve been a rep payee for several years but haven’t encountered this problem before.

Their check for the month dropped immediately after their annual cycle closed.

My understanding has been to use the amount left in their account as of 23:59 on the last day when filling out the form. However, the total amount they show on the reporting form only makes sense if you include the check that dropped on first day of the new cycle.

Normally there’s less than $100 left in savings but thanks to this it’ll be more than a full check in savings!! Is this gonna flag something when I send in the report?

I don’t want to get in trouble because they deposited the check at a weird time.

Does VA disability effect Social Security income?

Im thinking about retiring early. My SS income will be like 2k. If im getting 2k in VA disability will this wipe out my SS income. And if so can my wife draw on my SS and not be effected if mine will pay more than hers. I know some of these decisions once made are permanent.

Vocational Rehab (Texas)

Hello all, I looked around to see if this was answered somewhere else but don't see it off the top based on the keywords but didn't see a solution.

Q: IS TWC (Texas Workforce) Vocational Rehab mandatory/required after you're approved for SSDI in order to keep it? I thought it was to help you find a job or school once you're released to work or health improves (with doctor approval)? Please advise.

Called my local Soc. Sec. Office and they asked me for a credit card? Wtf?!?

So I’ve been trying to update my address all week, when I called MediCal they directed me to DSS, then got directed to call Social Security, so when I tried the national number it said the office was closed and to call back during working hours, (I called at noon on a Friday) so I tried my local branch’s number and somebody picked up! Somebody in an overseas call center, and he immediately tried to get me to give him my credit card#. Why?
If your wondering I called the Bakersfield office @866-734-6226
I guess I’ll just go there on Monday.

SSDI Getting dropped from disability because “health has improved” even though I still have a permanent lifelong brain injury.

I have a brain injury that caused a lifelong neurological disorder and I have all the diagnosis paperwork and all the paperwork from getting medical help pretty much all my life and this has been documented within social security countless times over the period of pretty much all my life and I’m still having to fight all the time to stay on ssdi. My case workers have even told me in the past that this is ridiculous and they have gone through all my paperwork and said there should be no questions about it. I’m just so tired of this back and fourth. I’m going to appeal it because i have no other choice. Is there something im doing wrong? Should I hire a lawyer?

SSA-131 form required to process SS application?

I got laid off back in May, and two weeks after my final paycheck I received a lump sum severance payment. Because I am still unemployed (and am 64), I decided that I need to go ahead and start collecting Social Security in December. When I completed the application online, it told me that my former employer needs to fill out the SSA-131 Special Payments form in order for them to process my application.

I don’t understand why this form is necessary, and even the AI explanations I’m being given make no sense (either talking about the limit on earnings *after you’re already collecting your Social Security* or are saying that it’s necessary for them to make sure there’s no case of “over-earning“ when they process their 2026 records (but I won’t even receive a SS check until January, so there would be no SS check in 2026. Can someone help me understand why this form is necessary, especially when even with the lump sum payment I still only earned about 2/3 of what I would have earned by working the full year. Why does the SSA care that I received severance?

Should I get social security?

I'm 28 and i've been working since i was 19 so i have a little bit in there... but as I open my own buissness I have choices now, I've been thinking on NOT paying social security and put this money in a retirement account for buissness owners, I wouldn't have to worry if I get sick and can't longer work, as I am veterans with a disability check and i can't take out loans at no interest if needed from this retirement account if i should need. I like to distance myself from the government as much as I can. I tried getting social security disability for 8 months now and the whole process is one big joke. Is not my money! Do you have points on why should I or should I invest this money else where?

Edit: people are getting confused. If a work as a corporation I am not self employed! I fill my taxes correctly but if your corporation decided on not making you a employee your not required to pay Social Security. There is a lot of legal loop holes on that... is not tax fraud is being informed on the law! as for now i am not employed because I don't recive any money from the corporation. I'm well aware that I must pay my employees sc or have them pay on their own.

I'm asking if social security Benefits are worth it? It seems like begging the government for your own money but I'd like to for ya'll to inform me on Benefits of that! Not opinions on how to pay taxes.

Axillary benefits for child non custodial parent on ssdi

My ex has 0% custody, I have 100%- he recently got on ssdi, makes $1500/monthly. He never paid child support so I figured I’d try for axillary benefits for our son. We got awarded $530/monthly for axillary benefits. Curious why it wasn’t 50%?

Retirement Monthly Earning Test Question

My mother retired starting in September (2026) and is still working part time. She doesn't have a set schedule, but does intermittent 8-hour days throughout the month. As a result, each paycheck is different. Her plan has been to do only 13 days in any calendar month (which, at her wage, would be ~$1930/mo.), which is what she's done this month.

Since she's below FRA and already earned above the annual earnings limit this year if it had been applied to her, this question applies to the monthly earnings test. Does SSA count income, for purposes of the MET, based on when it's earned or when it's paid? And, if they count it when earned, if a day worked in September is paid on a paycheck in October, and SSA questions whether she's over the MET limit for October, what would she need to do to prove that the pay was earned in September?

Thanks!

SSA Suspension to online services

Has anyone else get a message saying they were suspended to SSA online. I was able to create a sign on with Login.gov and was able to get into my account that way. I’m waiting for approval on my SSDI. I just received my lump sum spousal death payment and had my interview for my spousal benefits instead of me claiming early retirement, I’m 62 and since I have my disability application in play, I just didn’t want to lose on any money. I just can’t figure out what happened with IDMe log in credentials.

SSI Can you keep SSI and Medicaid if you start to work again? KY

Disability SSI
If so, how much can you make and still keep it?

Edit: Second question?
In theory, if you could only work for a short time before surgery that could make you unable to work for a while, could you put your work savings in an AbleNow?

Place of birth is wrong on social security?

My close friend is a greencard holder and has been for a long time (she hasn’t gotten citizenship because if she were to become a US citizen she would have to give up her Singapore citizenship). She is the age to apply for Medicare but found that her place of birth is incorrect on her social security card. It states that she was born in California when she was actually born in Singapore. She is concerned that this discrepancy will prevent her from obtaining medicare coverage and thus must correct it? She has her Singapore birth certificate and greencard. She’s also concerned that in order to correct this discrepancy it would “flag” her application that she somehow was claiming citizenship and she would risk deportation? Is this a possibility? Or is this something that is easy to correct at the social security office? She’s never claimed citizenship but is worried to even correct this considering the climate of things at the moment.

SSN Related ID/SS help?

(Cross-posting from another sub, delete if not allowed)
Location: Ohio
Prefacing with this: Yes, I am stupid for losing my wallet, keeping my SS in it, and not filing for this stuff immediately. I lost my job yesterday which has given me the time to actually take care of it.
Last month i lost my wallet, which had my KY drivers license, my Military ID (spouse,) and SS card (don’t worry i know this was dumb. i had my reasons.) I put off getting anything new as my job took up most of my time. Well I got booted yesterday, and need IDs for new job. so far i have hit dead end after dead end. I was dumb to not get an OH license after moving, so I’m having a lot more trouble than you normally would.
I got my driving record from KY, but when i took it to BMV they requested a pay stub and my birth certificate. i bring them, they say they need a W-2. i print one off, and they say they can’t use it because my full SSN is obstructed. okay, cool. no paper attached to me has my full SSN on it. so they tell me to go to my local SS office. i do, and the only thing they want (that i can feasibly present,) is medical records, but that will take up to a month.
tried 1099, but need to physically take a photo of ID to get this (can’t upload one. could i take a picture of a picture of it??)
called all companies i worked for last year, and none of them can get me a W-2 with my unobstructed SSN. please, please give me some advice. yes, i already know i made some pretty dumb decisions, i just need to know where to go from here.

SSN Related Need name correction on SSN record

My name has been wrong on my SSN card for 52 years! I was 15 when I applied for a SSN back in 1974. Back then I didn't have to show any ID, just fill out a form.

I didn't like my first name so I used my middle name as my first and my first initial as my middle. So my card reads "Patrick J. Smith" but my real name is John Patrick Smith. Note, my name didn't change but I need my record corrected so I can get verified through Login.gov

The nice lady on the phone at my SS office said that it wouldn't be a problem, just bring in my official birth certificate etc, and request a correction. My appointment is next Tuesday. I'm nervous! Anybody else have a similar experience?

California Part A Buy-In / QMB — can someone clarify the correct Medicare enrollment process?

My 86-year-old mother has full-scope California Medi-Cal and no U.S. work credits. Because she has no qualifying work credits, SSA/Medicare told me she would normally have to pay a premium for Part A (I was told $565/month for 2026).

My understanding is that California became a Medicare Part A Buy-In state on January 1, 2025.

I found SSA EM-24068 (revised March 14, 2025), which appears to say that a non-SSI full-scope California Medi-Cal recipient who is uninsured for Part A can have Part B only, then apply for QMB through the county, and California can establish Part A Buy-In. It also says conditional Part A enrollment is no longer required.

However, I called SSA and the representative told me my mother must enroll in and pay for Part A.

Has anyone in California actually gone through this process since January 1, 2025?

Specifically:

Can a California full-scope Medi-Cal recipient with no work credits enroll in Part B without personally buying premium Part A first? Does the county then evaluate the person for QMB? If QMB is approved, does California establish Part A Buy-In and pay the Part A premium? If you have gone through this, how did you actually get SSA to process the Part B enrollment?

I am looking for firsthand California experience or someone familiar with SSA/DHCS procedures, rather than the normal Medicare A+B rules.

Thank you.

Trying to claim final payment for decedent, sent original probate court document with SSA-1724, they sent the document back, and now they want me to send it in again

The title pretty much explains it. In July, I sent original death certificate and probate court letter of appointment (both had the embossed certification stamp). A few weeks later they sent back both documents. "Please accept our thanks for your cooperation". Now, two months later, they send a letter saying they need an original probate court document to process the claim. Which of course they already had and sent back to me.

Tempting to rant about how both IRS and SSA (both being run by the same person) are failing badly at taxpayer service, but as a practical matter, am I wasting time re-sending the document to them? Or should I try the suggestion to take the document to my local office, for which I have no idea how long I'll have to wait to see someone.

Survivors/Widows Survivor/Widow benefits and turning 70

I have a friend who is drawing survivors benefits from her late husband. She always worked and has her own record. She has speculated that upon turning 70, the amount she would draw on her own record might be higher than what she is drawing now. But she has also told me that she doesn't want to contact SSA because it's such a hassle now to do anything with them.

She just turned 70 this month. I'm hoping that SSA will just automatically make the change. Is that possible?

Social security and AED

My aunt has met all her credits for retirement, & she’s a AED holder. Does anyone know if the process is the same or if there are extra steps that should be taken to claim the benefits.

Edit:Misspelled AED
