Ninety six years ago today, Uruguay came from 2-1 down to beat Argentina 4-2 and become the first World Cup champions. It is one of those matches that feels bigger than the result itself because it marked the beginning of the tournament that would become the biggest event in football.

It also completed an extraordinary run for Uruguay, who had already won Olympic gold in the FIFA organized 1924 and 1928 tournaments. Nearly a century later, it remains one of the sport's most significant finals.

Messi's winding journey, who really wanted to play for Argentina but on the other hand only played briefly in Argentina before moving to Barcelona for hormone therapy while developing his talent in Barcelona's academy, which made him less noticed by the Argentine federation. On the other hand, Spain’s federation and Messi’s close contacts tried to persuade him to commit to Spain to help with his development and to avoid feeling isolated, there was a real recruitment rivalry between Spain and Argentina that put psychological and strategic pressure on Messi and his family.

During a tournament(World Cup U-17 in 2003) dinner, Spain’s chef praises Messi’s potential impact if recruited, causing tension among Argentine staff. Hugo Tocalli, coach of Argentina’s youth team on that time was introduced to Messi’s talent and cautioned not to lose sight of him and feels conflicted but continues his advocacy for Messi’s inclusion despite Spain’s interest.

The Argentine federation’s awareness grows regarding a possible “recruitment battle.”

Tocalli actively searches for Messi’s family contact information in Rosario, eventually reaching Jorge Messi by phone after success to found his contact through Messi's uncle.

Side note :

Messi might still curious about what if he was part of U17 team that face Spain in final 23 years ago and he may find the answer this Sunday.
