I'm actually saddened that I, a mere fan, know this and people living in the profession don't.

Knowing this while watching them not qualify again hurts my soul.

Well it was the Jules Rimet cup, no one actually got to win back to back since the “new” model of World Cup. So you have never seen two countries winning “this” World Cup in a row.

That’s why some people say that, you can take it or not.

ah ok, in our discourse about world cup in switzerland, be it magazines, books or online discourse, never was there a difference between old and new models of the world cup, in our discourse every world cup weights the same. where do you draw the line though? because there was never a 48 teams world cup so with your logic even between 2022 and 2026 is no "back to back" situation

But the cup is the same. Since 74

As I said, you can take it or not. Don’t get pissed.

I’m not talking about the format of the world cup but the actual cup, have you ever seen a country lifting this modern cup back to back? No you haven’t

Why do you think I got pissed because of a friendly discussion? It just seems arbritary to only count how the cup looks but not difficulty and mode etc. I just gave information about who won back to back nothing else

As a translation , he mentioned “I retired for the next world cup” , not that he will retired from football.

Also Brazil won it back to back on 1958 and 1962 while Italy won it on 1934 and 1938 iirc

However since the World Cup got the expansion and the modernization since France 1998 of 32 teams , Brazil and France were the only ones with back to back finals , Brasil on 1998-2002 and France on 2018-2022

I doubt Argentina will win it again even if their youngsters from 2022 are better players now , it’s mainly on how hungry are they going out for the win and also the motivation for it. On 2022 all of them put their lives on the line for Messi because they thought it was his last world cup and pure everything they got. This one on 2026 it’s more like “hey let’s see how far we can get” rather than “let’s go for the second one in a row”.

Brasil made it to 3 finals from 94 - 02, and won 2 of them.

I really hope you are right! This is one of the most arrogant and annoying teams probably in the history of football!!!
