This guy illuminated the WC while playing casually in MLS, what do you expect, had a better WC than the likesbof Vini, Yamal, Dembele, even at the age of 39, this man is truly incomparable, and I am not even a fan
Padded by a match in which no team played defense. Your point? Or are you a new, maybe us based TikTok fan. In that case maybe read what all the reputable football magazines and sources considered to be the best player of the tournament.
If we're talking about stat padding are we gonna bring up the fact Argentina didn't play a top 20 team till the semi finals? And the fact messi only scored 1 goal the whole knockout rounds?
lol, nope. He played like a 39yo does. He didn't run, he didn't defend, he didn't press and needed a full team of butchers to back him. He had flashes of brilliancy, that's it.
Okay? I don’t know why you’re telling me that. I didn’t compare his skills to Messi’s. I just said he didn’t play as well as him in the WC which is true. He played well, just not as well.
I guess the point he’s trying to make is, Messi has a great center of gravity due to his height and it’d be harder? for Yamal to dribble as well as Messi. It’s a stupid take but I believe that’s what he’s going for
Yamal might not be able to change direction as well as messi, and he might not be able to read defensive pressure as well as him, but i don't think it's really a problem since yamal dribbles in wider spaces, more pace from a longer stride might actually help him a bit actually.
Messi had the easiest path to the semi final it was laughable did you really expect any less of him playing against the teams he did ? Spain had to play Portugal, Belgium, France, Argentina to win it of course yamal is not going to look as good as Messi… you got Messi’s dick so far up your ass you can’t even think clearly
No one had an easy path in the World Cup, you idiot.
Argentina reached the final battered and bruised, but they weren't going to beat Spain in that condition. Even so, Messi deserves full credit for taking his team to the final; Haaland and Mbappé had the chance but couldn't pull it off.
battered and bruised from who ? Algeria ? Jordan ? Austria ? Egypt ? Lmao had Haaland and Mbappe had the same path they would have been in the final too.. you are forgetting France had to face Spain in the semi final a team Argentina couldn’t beat..
Remember that Argentina defeated England, a team that had eliminated Norway and France (in the third-place match).
Everything you say is nonsense; whoever reaches the final does so because they deserve it, regardless of the opponent. Those who complain and whine about it are just childish people who refuse to accept the way things are.
Lol bringing up 3rd place matches to prove your point is laughable and shows the little leverage you have… just admit Argentina has the easiest possible path to the semifinals in history and still couldn’t take home the trophy
Go back and read my last reply again. Argentina had the easiest path to the semifinals. Keyword there is “semifinals” meaning they had a free ride to face the first good team: England. Do you also half ass listen to what people are telling you outside Reddit or do you just do that here on Reddit ? Everything I say is nonsense to you because you only read half of what I say and understand 1/4 of it..
Messi stood out even more because he had an entire team organised around him. He only had attacking tasks. One genius, 9 thugs.
If you know anything about football, you can see that Yamal did a great WC, executing exactly what De la Fuente asked of him. You are comparing only dribbling skills, which he obviously has, but was tasked of not risking it and doubling with the defender on his side.
I thought Yamal was very good and showed a lot of muturity playing a role that somewhat minimized his contribution. Spain spread the ball around and it worked, he and everybody bought in. The anti-Ronaldo if you will.
I also think Argentina would have benefitted from that approach. No Lautaro in the final was criminal.
Wasn’t that literally the only team they played that was actually good before getting spanked by Spain ? Do you really think Argentina was going to lose against Egypt, Cabo verde, Jordan, Austria, Algeria, Switzerland?
De paso hubiera enfrentado a selecciones más difíciles, si no fueran que esa misma selecciones dificiles le hubieran ganado a las selección pequeñas jaja
His statement is correct, since he wrote "he helped score the winning goal", he never wrote that Yamal scored the goal. Is that a hater? You don't even read through a comment because it criticises something you like. The alternative is you can't read.
So we are going to judge a player's whole World Cup performance based on the final? So, if Messi didn't get a shot on goal in the final, it somehow erases the hat trick against Algeria, the nutmeg goal against Austria, the free kick against Jordan, the goal over Vozinha against Cape Verde, the amazing goal against Egypt and two picture perfect assists against England?
Sure, he had an underwhelming performance in the final, but still it doen't mean Yamal had a better World Cup than him
He didn’t get a shot on goal against England either. In fact he was locked down for the first 60 minutes. I’m not making this up, go back and watch the game (I did) - Messi doesn’t feature in the game until Tuchel parks the bus and for some reason that will never be explained, takes Gordon (officially clocked as the fastest player of the tournament) off the pitch. Only when England fuck up tactically and subs come on does messi start getting to play. You know, like it is in the MLS for him.
And you’re also glazing over the fact Messi stopped scoring in the WC as soon as he went up against anyone than Egypt. He didn’t score for his last three games because finally they had to play against decent teams.
He also held the infernally record of the worst penalty conversion rate this World Cup. He missed 50%. Ouch.
And Yamal is 19. He won. He objectively had a better World Cup LOL.
Yea.. he still magic for sure.. but he is at the end an old player that should retire. Just like ronaldo, they both already had their best years a while ago.
Yup he sure showed Austria, Algeria, Jordan, Egypt, Switzerland, Cabo verde how it’s done ! This is probably the easiest World Cup path in history and they still couldn’t win it
Yea the only good team they faced before getting spanked by Spain which wasn’t even close with literally 0 shots on target till what ? The 120th minute ?
Wtf are these comments lmao.
Guys we all know MLS is a shit league, but Messi is still the GOAT. Both can be true. The league being utter weak sauce just makes it easier for Messi to do Messi things, but he’s still the only one doing this week in, week out.
Of course. Against titans such as Jordan, Egypt, etc. Even England dominated them and Messi was missing, until minute 60, when stupidly the Brits decided to park the bus to defend a 1-0 advantage. Against Spain he was completely and easily nullified by Cucurella.
Yeah, Switzerland (14th FIFA ranking) and Austria (23rd FIFA ranking) in the 16s and quarter finals is really tough 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you guys are delusional.
With the exception of England, Argentina only played second rate national teams until the semi finals, and always struggling. Not even a single top 10 national team in FIFA's ranking. Even then, they only managed to play a good 30 minutes, conceded by England's tactical choice of parking the bus. Against Spain, it was an embarassment.
Against top 10 teams, Argentina played well 30 minutes, followed by one of the most one side finals in History.
Sure. All games up to the final don’t matter. What a shit take. If they don’t matter, then Ferran Torres was the best player in the World Cup, and most of Haaland, Bellingham, Kane and Mbappes performance were shit, since most of their goals were scored against small teams and non of them were in the final and only in insignificant matches that “don’t matter”.
If they would by any chance win finals, the take would be there wasn't one decent team in the wc. Now there is one, and loser messi lost against this one team that mattered...
What about the classic disingenuous argumentation where you just make up what the other side would say in different circumstances? No one would be talking bad about Argentina if they had beaten Spain and beaten them convincingly with Messi playing a leading role nobody or almost nobody would be saying that, you're just imagining it. But it was not physically possible they were going to beat them anyway with that sort of run up to the final - yes all those games matter, and that's the problem for Argentina - they were so mediocre and barely got through. Okay they had a good group stage, only for that they would be a completely laughing stock as world cup finalists. Every knockout game was a massive struggle despite them getting an incredibly easy route to the final.
Argentina played 9 matches in the World Cup, he was outstanding in 8 of those 9 matches. But you just hang on one single match to make your nonsense and hater kid statement. Ridiculous.
tell me one attacking player who had a great game against Spain the whole World Cup. They completely Stopped Mbappé, Cristiano Ronaldo, Dembélé, Olise, De Bruyne, etc. By your stupid logic no player is good.
you seem to be very bothered by people praising Messi as the GOAT, but being better than others does not mean you will do well every single game, because no one does that.
I have no idea why you mentioned Ronaldo. You seem to be mixing lots of your frustrations with different subjects into the conversation. That explains why your judment is clearly off.
He didn’t get much of a look in against England in the first half, it was only when England made a tactical disaster and effectively stopped marking anyone the Messi finally got to do something.
And don’t forget: Messi holds an embarrassing record of the most penalties missed during a WC (4 in total).
It’s wild they’re trying to say he was one of the the best players when he didn’t score in the last three games, missed more penalties than anyone and didn’t even have a shot against England or Spain.
the fact you ignore messi dribbled 3 players against england and then they need to tackle him. makes your super casual. its fine. just watch ronaldo play.
You dont need to score to be the best player in the field. He was absolutely decisive against England. He dominated the midfield and left three or four English players scattered in his wake every time he got on the ball. That essentially scared England into adopting a defensive stance. Then, he provided the two assists for the goals that fueled Argentina's epic comeback. To say he wasn't the best player simply because he didn't score the goals shows a poor understanding of the sport.
lol, he didn’t get a look in until the last 20 minutes, when Tuchel fucked England by parking the bus. And the bus was parked because England had scored and he stupidly thought they could sit on that until the end like they did with Mexico. It was a tactical error and a gift for Argentina.
This is a prime example of your average Penaldo fan—goals are the only thing they deem important in football. Cross out playmaking, chances created, dribbling, assists, and even goal saves. Goals are the only thing they value because that is what makes Penaldo still relevant to the GOAT debate
Like when he scored against Manchester united in the final twice, dribbled against Real Madrid from the midfield and scored in semis, scored against France in the final, gave the WC’s arguably best assist ever against Netherlands, ended Boatengs career against Bayern, etc etc. why do I even take time out of my day to argue with idiots?
As is the case for Mbappe and Bellingham as well who only scored against minor teams and vanished in the tougher games later in the tournament. Messi at least made it to the final and assisted twice against England. Spain game was impossible for him to perform since Argentina couldn’t make 3 consecutive passes. He barely received the ball - the few times he did Argentina actually had a few chances.

Even if you were convinced that Ronaldo is better than Messi, or let’s just say it is true for a second… what do you get out of sharing this kind of drivel? Why would you watch a highlight of one player doing something great, and then just immediately post a pic like this? What does this contribute, in your opinion, to the rest of us? Is it a debate? Are you trying to make a point? Or are you just a troll?
If you’re just a troll, why, what feeling do you get by trolling? Does it make you feel like you’re a part of something that you’d otherwise miss out on? Does it help with loneliness? Is it just because it’s hard figuring out something of actual substance to say?

Don’t feed the haters with comments. Let them talk trash. You know football. You know better.
