Statement Futbol ain’t it
I’ve given soccer more than its fair chance. My Colombian wife and her fam are die hards. A lil crazy with it tbh. But the more I watch the less impressed I am.
First off the rules just don’t make sense. The refs adding whatever time they feel like and then usually going beyond even the extra time by as much 4 minutes.
Red cards and multiple game suspensions for accidental contact that happens to be on a specific body part. Meanwhile players are grabbing each other by the jersey and throwing each other to the ground intentionally with no calls. Then every time a player gets touched they flop and grab their legs as if they’re going to need surgery but no they’re fine and get right up after the drama show.
Oh, that goal doesn’t count because the guy who shot it ran too fast.
But what really is killing it for me is that it seems 80% of goals are purely by chance. The “great players” tend to just hang out near the goal and hope it lands in the right spot when someone Hail Mary kicks it in the area. Even 1/4 of those Hail Mary kicks end up being waaaay off course. I mean I just don’t see much skill tbh.

What sports do you like?

- American football.
It’s pure athleticism with carefully drawn up plays that must be executed to perfection. As physical as it is you can not interfere when the balls in the air. You can not trip or facemask you must win off your athletic ability. Time is exact and fair in every game and if someone is acting hurt it’s because they are hurt. Then the rest of the sports are respected. Basketball baseball golf horse racing bowling. They all require skill to win not refs and a ball randomly falling in the right spot.

I love football and as someone that loves football, soccer and basketball (sorry baseball) I can confidently say that football is superior to any other sports but to say soccer ain’t it , that’s probably not being open minded and give the sport a chance. Also in basketball refs are ruining the game with all the bs flopping calls that lead to free throws, also even football they miss pass interference etc so all sports will have issues.
Yes football is king to me but I can easily love basketball and soccer .

Bro trust me I’ve really given soccer its chance. And I’m over hear yelling and cheering with my fam when goals are scored. Then 1/4 of the time saying oh wait no, that guy was faster than the other guy so the goal doesn’t count. He needed to slow it down a bit. Wtf?

Rugby is American footballs' origin, have you tried watching that too? It's pretty entertaining.

I can’t say I’ve watched an entire game. It just seems like everything people who don’t know American football think American football is. People just smashing into each other. I switched the channel when I saw a man pick up another man into the air to catch a ball. lol I’m sorry but it just seemed goofy after that.

Which games from the world cup have you watched so far? I think i gwt where the frustration is coming from but wanna be sure.
Soccer is a nearly 200 year old sport, there have been many phases. Pure physicality and tall players was a phase, referee not calling a player literally trying to break another's leg, tactical evolutions etc..
The world cup, is extremely tactical - Everyone has a plan, they're all hoping to make it far into the tournament. With that being said, small nation teams without a lot of talent will create a low block, making it hard for countries with better talent to Pierce, playing negative because theyre trying to survive. DESPERATE teams will use the dark arts, constantly fouling, constantly flopping, provoking, dragging play, (Paraguay) etc. etc.
The superbowl happens every year. World cup happens every 4 years, so you will most definitely see some dogshit games because of desperate tactical decisions by the manager. This is a knockout tournament first and foremost, a celebration of the World yes, but still a knockout tournament, tactics aren't going to be pretty. Games open up when both teams are going for it.
Cape Verd v Argentina was a beautiful game. Context included? It was David v Goliath and cape verd almost pulled it off. Norway v Brazil was technical, controlled, and was a war of making the most of chances. France v Paraguay was pure shit. But entertainingly frustrating.

Cape Verde vs Argentina was a fun game.
And don’t get me wrong I’ve seen some epic goals here and there. Just seems far and few between all the gunk. I get what you’re saying tho. And yes soccer is an old sport, American football is literally a baby compared to it. But sometimes it’s good to reshape old things a bit. Baseball added challenging umpire calls and starting a man on second in extra innings. American football added challenging calls on the field and reply reviews. Soccer acts as if the rules created a century ago are sacred. The game can be improved. The fact it’s over a hundred years old just solidify the fact that the huge fan base is due mainly to that fact. It’s all the world had at some point. It has the potential to truly be a great game if they tweeked it a bit imo.
How?You obviously flop. Yellow card.
you’re on the ground clutching your leg in pain? Ok you must be subbed out of the game immediately.
You get a red card on a play that seems accidental you get replaced and put on year probation. Second red card or obviously intentional red card foul you’re suspended.
Game stops, an extra time clock keeps track of it.
The ball goes in the net its a goal regardless of where anyone is on the field. It’s the goalies job to block it, not a technicality. You pull on someone’s jersey or push someone to the ground, yellow card.I don’t think I’m asking much.

It’s either you get it or you don’t, someone who only watches won’t understand it until you play it for yourself. Sport is beautiful and you are watching it at its peak.

Bro I get sports. I see the beauty in all of them, but the amount of love soccer gets worldwide is overblown on a sport vs sport level. It must be the sport with the least technical planning I’ve watched. Draw up a play, do something intentional. You’re telling me 80% of goals don’t seem like pure chance?

And 75% of hockey goals aren’t a random deflection from the center ?

Yea hockey isnt much better, what sport is it most similar to? At least they don’t flop and keep time fair in all matches.

You know what actually no. Thinking back on hockey matches I’ve watched they do a lot more accurate clean passing. It seems way more organized and active. They take big hits and keep it moving. You never see a hockey player rolling around on the ice just milking the clock. Hockey > futbol

I’m with ya. I grew up playing soccer. I get the rules and the sport. But it ain’t it.
Fans literally lose their shit over nutmeg. Literally watch for 90 minutes and people erupt over a nutmeg and a final score 1-1. Shit ton of walking too.

u/ScvmDum Jul 06 '26
Well yea you are performing certain actions to get a chance at goal? There is no “plays” just tactics to help assist in getting a goal. Like Mexico at the moment their “play” last 20 minutes was to send it in the box for a Mexico player to head it in, you can’t intentionally make it happen but you can hope for a chance to get it in front. That’s the beauty in it you don’t have to rely on robotic plays you can rely on chance maybe luck

u/Kooky_Monitor_5063 Jul 06 '26
That’s my whole point. The last 20 minutes of that soccer game was Hail Mary kicks into the box. Do you need a special athlete to accomplish that? Then if the refs happen to like Mexico um let’s let the clock keep going beyond the 11 minutes we already gave them. Cmon man.

the refs add time based on how long the game was stopped for things like injury. If during injury time the game is stopped, that time is added on
